I was asked by a client yesterday whether it was okay to pause briefly in between reps, or whether providing 'continuous tension' would be more optimal. . What can the use of constant tension provide? โœ… it produces more metabolites due to the acute vasoconstrictive nature of sets performed in this manner, accumulating metabolic stress. . What are the potential limitations? โŒ reduces overall work capacity due to increased rate of fatigue from lactate accumulation โŒ reduces relative intensities โŒ may force an individual to rush the set, forgetting execution cues and losing control of effective breathing patterns. . In my opinion I see a brief pause between each rep as acceptable due to its ability to standardise execution rep to rep, control breathing and ensure intensities are kept as high as possible during loading. If we were solely focused on metabolic stress as a variable for adaption during a specific exercise, then a continuous exposure to the load would be favourable, but this will only comprise a small portion of total volume per session. . Before someone comments saying 'don't lock out your knees like that', remember every single hinge joint in the body is designed by evolution to do so, extend and flex. Look at research on biomechanics, it is by no means clear that joint forces are higher during lockout than during any other loaded joint position. In fact in some instances full joint extension can improve motor unit activation and muscular recruitment. at M10

It has been promoted in the fitness community for as long as I remember so we wanted to look at the facts and research behind the claims. 1) Glutamine promotes muscle synthesis: This was observed in cell cultures and IV glutamine, but oral supplementation in HEALTHY individuals did not demonstrate this. Glutamine also failed to increase power output in studies. Important to note that Glutamine does increase protein synthesis in the GUT. 2) Glutamine promotes recovery after workouts: Studies have shown that glutamine can increase glycogen replenishment rates (muscle energy storage) alongside carbohydrates and may enhance glycogen stores taken alone. 3) Glutamine prevents muscle breakdown: This was proven in a very small study but more research is needed. - The takeaway from all this is that glutamine may be useful in recovery and preventing muscle breakdown, you may be wasting your money if you are taking it exclusively for muscle building. I got my body composition reading from the gym tonight and it totally just goes to show that the scale doesn't mean everything!! All I have been doing since having Daisy is running and insanity workout along with some bootcamps in the beginning! I have lost 3 stone in that time and managed to keep a good level of muscle. So I have a metabolic age of a 15 year old! Woohoo! Does that mean I can eat like a 15 year old?? Erm no not if I want to uncover my abs ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚ I do have a good muscle to fat ratio as it is but I can Improve on this even more! My goals over the next month are to 1๏ธโƒฃ first and foremost enjoy myself!! 2๏ธโƒฃeat a balanced diet with NO RESTRICTIONS because this is the diet I know works best for me! 3๏ธโƒฃ reduce body fat! 4๏ธโƒฃ Increase Muscle 5๏ธโƒฃ Maintain my weight! I plan on doing this via a strength programme at the gym and by doing insanity max 30 give me my happy hormone boost!! Ill be starting my team beach body coaching challenge next month for anyone who wants tips based on my own experience, motivation and accountability! Why???
