“I fly in from London on the day the Muslim ban is enforced and I get detained in Newark Airport for two hours. I am born and raised in New Jersey. I’ve been on a comedy tour for fifteen years, I flew two hundred eighty days last year. And the customs and border patrol guy, he goes, "I know you must think this is because of Donald Trump. It's not." And I was like, "Dude. I've been flying in and out of here since I was five! This is because of Donald Trump.” The President is actually posting fake videos from far-right organizations about Muslims. This has changed my life. I get death threats now.” @maysoonzayid • • • Photographs : @michellekinneyphotography Editor : @blighadeline H/MUA : @stylebyannavictoria Operations : @rrobems Custom Gown : @ramikashou • • #nastywomenofnewyork #maysoonzayid #michellekinneyphotography #cerebralpalsy #disabilityadvocate #muslimwomen #muslimban #disabilityadvocate #arabamerican #comedy at New York, New York

“I didn’t realize the jokes I did about disabilities were pretty innovative, all my jokes were tied to sex. One of my famous disability jokes was, "I want to get married because there’s only so much fun a palsy chick can have putting in a tampon!” And then 9/11 happened and I'm immediately thrust into the spotlight as a New Yorker who's Muslim and Arab, post-9/11, who's loud and proud and trying to combat these negative images. I founded something called the New York Arab-American Comedy Festival now in its 15th year, with @deanofcomedy. My comedy became political. I started going after George Bush and Dick Cheney. By the way, Mike Pence is one of Dick Cheney’s horcruxes. 100%. Look at the man’s eyes.” • • • Photo : @michellekinneyphotography Editor : @blighadeline H/MUA : @stylebyannavictoria#nastywomenofnewyork #maysoonzayid #michellekinneyphotography #arabamerican #disabilityadvocate #cerebralpalsy #comedy at New York, New York

@hillaryclinton was fighting for disability rights and education from the beginning of her law career. And it was something that she carried out through her community service and work as a First Lady. And there are people that Hillary Clinton helped that were working on her campaign 20 years later. So not only was she a trailblazer but she incorporated disability into her campaign beautifully. And that's not something I see a lot of politicians do. She made sure to always mention disability rights when she went through the minority rights stuff and she was very aware of us in health care and in education. We have just always been a priority issue for her. But Donald Trump is WAY better with us crips. My Dad is very active, but I look at my Grandparents when they all passed they were sitting in chairs, doing nothing. You see old people in New York going places and that’s what I want to do. Their fight is much harder. But nobody wants to be told that someone has it worse off than they do, they want to believe we are all equally marginalized. And listen, I guess I can hear their point- the overall themes of feminism, even just taking the #metoo movement and the general acknowledgment of sexual abuse all women have to deal with. That is important too, especially as a woman who’s struggled with body issues, I get it. But still- marginalized women will get it worse. If some guy slaps my ass and I’m appalled and feel degraded, I have to stop and think “I’m a woman most men think is white. What is it like for my black and Latina sisters? The latest interviewee @nastywomenofnewyork . Very proud to be a part of this project ・・・ “I am mostly white. Or I would at least would say I'm white presenting-- but I'm multiracial. I usually say I'm multiracial but I also feel it’s incredibly important to recognize and be aware of how white I look. There is a certain privilege that’s afforded to me for how I look. That’s why I have to be a voice. Sometimes my version of using my voice is aggressive, that’s who I am. I’ll walk into a room and say “Why are there all white people here?” I feel like I represent a multiracial background and therefore I have to use my “whiteness.” White people can say whatever they want. “Why? Why? Because you weren’t allowed to get married before you “married.” And I waited for him to come home on a furlough. He came home. It was September the 14th, 1941. He was what they called “drafted.” He turned 22 and he was drafted and then didn't get out until four or five years after that. Where I had my honeymoon, it was over a funeral parlor. It was a big house. And they had funerals on one side and a hotel on the other side. Who would ever think of that? I'll never forget — and I keep laughing that it was over a funeral parlor.” Mary, 99, on why she eloped with her husband. “I was married up until he passed away. 73 years. 73 years. Another lifetime, another lifetime. So, in the meantime I had three children. They're all not too close in age. The first two or three years apart and the third is seven years apart. I love my children all so much, but I also really wanted to get back to work! I always wanted to work. When I had not yet finished with school, I didn’t have any extra money. And it bothered me that I didn't have money then. I like money! It gives me such a nice security because now I could buy a gift if I wanted to. When I had my third child, my daughter, I stayed at home with her until she was 6 years old, and then I took my wings and I flew because it felt free! And I worked, for almost 30 years.” Mary, Queens NY • • #nastywomenofnewyork #womenshistory #womenshistorymonth #womenwhowork #michellekinneyphotography

In just a few months, she'll be celebrating her 100th birthday. A life-long New Yorker, and the daughter of immigrants -- she also happens to be the Great Aunt of my husband Joseph. Mary was born in May of 1918 and has seen more in her life than most people ever will. My grandparents have all passed away, and I have endless regret that I didn't sit down with them to ask more questions. I have always felt it is important to document the stories of our elders, not just as my family's genealogist -- but as a citizen of the world. “I think we are so conditioned to feel like we have to fight each other for that one spot in every industry. Men have been hoarding the lion's share of these positions. And because of that, they have inadvertently created this small little sliver that all women are trying to get their hands on. We're clawing at each other to get there, and we're so conditioned to take each other down in the process. We become jealous of each other because there isn’t enough space. But now that the space has been created, we have to get out of that habit. There is a lovely phrase that my old manager Suzanne de Passe used to say, “The lie is that there’s not enough room. There's plenty of room at the top, ladies. It's the bottom that's crowded." I love that. There's enough room for us all, we don't have to take each other down, and we don't have to compete. Let's just all go up together.” America Olivo • • Photo : @michellekinneyphotographer Hair and Makeup : @annavhs • • #nastywomenofnewyork #nastywomen #womensmarch #womensempowerment #riseup #timesup #metoo #feminism #feminist at New York, New York

“...I was at an event at my alma mater, Juilliard. Gloria Steinem was hosting "Makers". It was a presentation, a preview of things that they were going to include in their PBS series. I remember sharing an armrest with Ariana Huffington, I'm watching Gloria and she's talking about women and feminism. Showing us films about when women were first allowed to run marathons. Which was not that long ago. I had this moment, a feeling of shock. Here I was back at my college, and a class like this had never been offered to me as a student. Not once. I wish I had, which was precisely her point. At what point did women get complacent? Women walk, and march, and protest for everyone else's causes. But we forgot about our own. It was the unfinished business of the 20th century. We weren't marching for ourselves — but now we have. It was truly an eye-opening experience.” - America • Link in Profile for full interview • Photographer : @michellekinneyphotographer Hair and Makeup: @annavhs#nastywomenofnewyork #nastywomen #feminism #feminist #nastywoman #womensmarch #timesup #timesupnow #metoo #girlboss #ladyboss #americaolivo #portrait #nycportrait #nycportraitphotographer at New York, New York

“I have posed for Playboy Magazine, and in a full cover spread. At the time, it felt like a very pro-feminist thing for me to do. It felt empowering, the idea that I was going to be able to drop decades of Catholic shame about my body in front of the world. I loved the idea of finally get past the “burka” of Catholic prudishness. I was really happy to shed that. In my head, I thought, "Oh yes! I'm going to be so brave and I'm going to do this thing that scares the crap out of me!" It did make me feel good to do that, and I didn't take money for it. It wasn't something I thought was going to further my career. In fact if anything it kept me away from doing a lot of things. I couldn't work in children programming for awhile because of the Google-ability. If you Googled my name it could give your computer a virus. So those are some of the prices you pay when you do things like that.” - America Olivo • Photographer : @michellekinneyphotographer Hair and [email protected]: @annavhs#nastywomenofnewyork #nastywomen #feminism #feminist #nastywoman #womensmarch #timesup #timesupnow #metoo #girlboss #ladyboss #americaolivo #portrait #nycportrait #nycportraitphotographer at New York, New York

“I am totally spoiled with amazing friends who all support each other. I love it. I mean we all have our days, but generally, I feel like everyone is so supportive of one another and everyone is a good person. Not a bad one in the bunch. I'm so lucky. But I think there's a difference in what you do with your career and how you lift women up professionally. I have had to negotiate “boob time” in horror films I am working on. I work in an industry where I have to have serious conversations about onscreen “boob time.” It's frustrating that the business perpetuates these types of weird negotiations simply because it helps box office sales overseas, or whatever the reason may be. But I have to require time restraints because being a woman in this business, in this career, we have to be examples for one another. It’s a ripple effect. If I take a stand, others will too.” - America Olivo • For full interview, visit link in profile. “I am a flawed feminist. Sometimes I really miss the mark. In the past year I have been unkind to women, I have spent unnecessary time comparing myself to them, I have talked shit on Ivanka. All of that is a waste of my energy and talent that could've been utilized and directed at building other women and men up. This year my resolution has been to make connections. If my friend Rachel has started a new business, I connect her with my sister in law Aarica, a stop-motion animation artist, so that she can make content for Rachel's company. I am doing this Nasty Women of New York project because I believe in it but I also believe in my friend Michelle, and I want to connect her to as many strong women as I possibly can to make this a success. There's nothing more beautiful than the look on someone's face when they feel accomplished. Why wouldn't I want to be a small part of that?” • #nastywomenofnewyork #supportwomen #feminist #feminism #timesup #womensmarch #fightlikeagirl #metoo #michellekinneyphotography #suchanastywoman #imwithher #imstillwithher #blighvoth

"I've read stats saying over 97% of black educated women voted for Hillary Clinton. 95% of non college educated black Women voted for Hillary Clinton. So, what happened with my demographic? I've realized I have been accidentally exclusive with my idea of feminism. I've ostracized black feminists. In a big, embarrassing way. So currently my priority is to create a talking circle type forum that will initiate knowledge and conversation between feminist women of color and white feminists.
