View of the Larch Valley from Sentinel Pass at 8500ft elevation in Banff National Park. A moderately challenging ~7 mile round trip hike from Lake Moraine (with steady incline almost throughout) leads to this view of the valley and the surrounding peaks. Back home after a two week road trip to the northeast. I have about 2500 photos to weed through, but in the meantime here’s a shot that I only captured on my iPhone for some reason. 🤷🏻‍♂️ I went back to this spot multiple times to get a shot with my real camera but the conditions were never quite the same. . . . #acadianationalpark #goparks #findyourpark #nationalparkgeek #iphonex #landscapephotography #landscape_lovers #stunnersoninsta #usinterior #keepitwild #nps #instagood #artofvisuals #optoutside #maine #nationalpark #nationalparkphotography #photography #roadtrip #adventure #bestnatureshot

We spotted this fella hiding in the bushes not far from the road. Well, I say "spotted". We learned quickly that if there's a group of cars pulled over with their hazards on then there's normally some creature not far away. Time to reach for the long lens. “If You Want to Go Fast, Go Alone. If You Want to Go Far, Go Together.” · · Six years ago, a friend of mine shared this African proverb with me. Two years ago, I quoted it in the wedding toast I gave to my favorite couple. Last week, when my roommate asked everyone to pick a quote as her birthday gift, I chose this one again. What can i say? I just love how realistic yet romantic the saying is, and instead of telling us what to do, we get to make our own call.

Last night’s sunset which I actually came close to missing because it had been so cloudy and I was focused on a bull moose in the other direction who was eating in the middle of the lake. This was all after I watched a 7 point bull moose bugling in and around the lake and then some cow and calf elk as well in the middle of the lake. I had decided I was only photographing the moose if he came out into the water as I have photos of them in bushes and didn’t want to stand with 30-40 people in that area when I had the other side of the lake to myself for the most part. I was doing some long exposure shots of the cloudy sky when I started to hear grunting. Realized I was hearing the moose and turned to my left and he had already entered the water. So for the next 45 minutes I was focused on him in the other direction. Turned and saw this starting, switched lenses again and quickly captured it. Couldn’t help but think of this verse as I watched this unfold. “The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands.” Psalm 19:1 Canon 5d Mark III, 16-35 mm, 6-stop filter. 20 second exposure

Trying to brighten up my Monday over here, so hopefully it will brighten yours up too. I’m still trying to figure out how all of these emerald hues are real.⠀ The West coast is absolutely gorgeous, don’t get me wrong, but if you even remotely like nature and are visiting the US, Colorado is a must. I could go back over and over and over again and still not see everything I want to. I’m def going to try though. ⠀ Where do you want to keep returning to so you can see everything? ⠀ .⠀ .⠀ .⠀ .⠀ .⠀ .⠀ .⠀ .⠀ .⠀ .⠀ .⠀ .⠀ .⠀ #hikingadventures #mountainstories #hikemoreworryless #hikevibes #idhikethat #findyourpark #hikecolorado #womenwhohike #peoplewhohike #alpinelake #teamkaptainkenny #seekmorwilderness #adventurenthusiasts #wildvisuals #peoplewhohike #celebratewild #amongthewild #greettheoutdoors #outtherecolorado #idratherbeinnature #visitcolorado #nationalparkphotography #visitusaparks⠀⠀ #ourwild #wearestillwild #usnationalparks #rockymountainnationalpark⠀⠀ #takemetothemountains

A chunky bird of western streams and the only truly aquatic songbird of North America. The second bird on my Colorado bird bucket list. Our first day in the Rocky Mountains involved an 8.5 mile round trip hike to Ouzel Falls in the hopes of finding an American Dipper AKA Ouzel Dipper. Ten minutes in to the early morning start we took a small trail off the main trail down to the North Saint Vrain Creek and there it was bobbing in an out of the fast flowing water and hopping from rock to rock. It was still fairly dark outside and I really wanted to get a photo so I switched my Panasonic G9 over to 4K 30p video and started recording handheld. I was able to step through each frame of my three minute video and output a couple of JPEG photos I was happy with. This is one of those 4K photos. Very happy with quality considering how dark it was outside. #americandipper #aquaticsongbird #birds #birdlovers #birdsofinstagram #colorado #birdingdaily #wherelumixgoes #4kphotos #lumixg9 #leica100400 #ouzelfalls #rockymountainnationalpark #nationalparkphotography #stlbirder #audubonsociety

As the sun rises on this beautiful Monday, @adventure.mentality is able to check off another U.S. National Park! . . This past weekend we took a trip to Acadia National Park in Maine! All I can really say is, "Wow!" It's so beautiful and the two nights we were there is nowhere near enough time. We are already planning what we're going to do next time we go! . . Saturday morning we took a ride up Cadillac Mountain for sunrise. It's the highest peak in Acadia and lets you be the first to witness the sunrise in the country (in addition to the other 100+ people there)! Danté and I arrived into Yosemite for our first day of vacation well past the time for the really good morning light despite having left Los Angeles long before the sun came out. So we stuck around Oakhurst and toward the end of the day, made our way to Washburn Point which looks across the valley to the smooth expanse of Half Dome that from this angle makes me think of the face and beak of a bird. It was a dark night. Perfect for astrophotography. One of the last of the year. A night with no moon and a very visible Milky Way. Despite some deep fears of the dark that manifest themselves in the weirdest ways sometimes in my mind and even occasionally physically, I was looking forward to the challenge of some night sky photo action. No matter how many times I attempt to get better at this, my desire is never sated. I just want to keep at it! . We weren’t alone at Washburn. A few other photographers had the same idea. Some loud and disruptive, a few like us - just there to work. The darker it got, the thinner the crowd got and soon we were all alone save for one other photographer. . As beautiful as the Milky Way was, I couldn’t seem to take my eyes off the scene across the valley as the tiny blinking lights of head lamps bobbed and blinked in the trees, the last brave adventurers making their way down from hikes that began as early as our drive that morning. The fading rays of sunlight had made the three waterfalls to the right side of Half Dome look like a scene from Lord of the Rings. And as day became night, Half Dome seemed to keep the light longest, aglow long past all the scenery around it. And it was that scene which I couldn’t tear my eyes from that I ended up liking best from all the photos I took that night. The Milky Way didn’t extend all the way across the sky, it’s behind and to the right of me as I shot this, but the foreground in that direction couldn’t hold a candle to this. If Yosemite has a King, it’s Half Dome. And who needs the embarrassment of riches that is the Milky Way when you still have more stars than the Queen has diamonds and pearls... . #PPSummerPostcard

Monday September 16 Good Monday everyone! We are six days into our Dakota’s trip and it has been quite an adventure so far! I took this shot on our first day in Badlands National Park just a few hours after we arrived. It was a windy, rainy, and cold afternoon that didn’t hold much promise for photography. However, we found this herd of around 75 animals. After waiting out the rain we got ourselves into position take some shots of the herd as the sun was going down and the clouds were thinning to the west. I was fortunate to have this pair drop of into a canyon and silhouette themselves against the sunset brightened sky! Have a good Monday and keep looking for your next shot!

The end of an era! Every summer during the 2010's, my son David and I would go backpacking for a week in a different state ... something we called "Ten States in Ten Years". This past weekend marks the end of that project as we wrapped it up with a great trip to Banff National Park (*yes, I acknowledge that Alberta, Canada is not a state). The picture above shows Year 1 and Year 10 (as well as the aging effects of a decade on both father and son). What it can't begin to show is how much I loved doing this! After reflecting for a while, here are my two big takeaways: 1. We live in an astonishingly magnificent part of the world! The American West is so incredibly beautiful and diverse I feel almost ashamed that it took me 45 years before I began to explore it. The mountains, the deserts, the lakes and the canyons are stunning and breathtaking. I feel incredibly lucky that it's all so relatively close by. Backpacking may not be for everyone, but our National Parks system has done a great job of making some of our country's most beautiful sights accessible to just about everyone. And for those who want to make the extra effort to see the backcountry, the rewards are well worth it. 2. The time spent outdoors with my children has been priceless! Kudos to David for agreeing to hang with his old man year after year without wifi or cell service. My conservative estimate is that we've probably logged over 300 miles of trail time together and I'm thankful for every step. It didn't take long for him to take the lead from his father and blaze the trail. But I think the times I've enjoyed the most were hunkering down in a tent on a rainy night, sharing a flask of whiskey and swapping stories. I'm also incredibly thankful that I've been able to backpack separately with my daughter Madeline after college (and who joined us in the final two years of "Ten States"). Sharing the outdoors with these two wonderful human beings will always be one of the great highlights of my life!
