***Our Willowbrook Patient of the Week*** . Virginia opossums have a tough time of our winters. With exposed skin on their tails and ears, they often are admitted with cases of frostbite. In the case of this little one, it is quite severe on his tail and caused much of it to fall off! This very dark-furred opossum found refuge in our shed here at Willowbrook and was rescued last week. Instead of the possible possum response of playing dead when cornered, this brave marsupial tried to scare us off with loud growls and has not been an easy patient! . The historical range of Virginia opossums hasn’t always included northern Illinois, but they have expanded north due to their adaptable nature and our hospitable habitat. As omnivores, they find an abundance of food sources in our backyards, parks and forest preserves. They also eat thousands of ticks, so they are a handy neighbor to have. . While their tails do help them to balance and collect nesting material, they do not hang from them as often depicted. The goal is release for this one after we are sure he recovers. In our area, there are likely lots of short-tailed opossums roaming about! . #patientoftheweek #virginiaopossum

Big Marsh is an interesting place. Originally, it was marshland that was taken over by industrial dumping. The land was once home to nine steel mills. However, nature is taking over the area, once again. The semi trucks and surrounding industries make it hard to believe that so much biodiversity can be found here, but it works.
