Even as we harvest our early flowers, we are planning for our future harvests too. We are thrilled at how big these Lisianthus are growing. We hope they will be blooming in May. Thanks to Slow Money NC for helping us buy our hoop house and making this possible.

Some of the flowers coming out of our new hoop house and perennial beds. This cold and gray has really slowed them down, but we love these splashes of color.

Well we just ordered some of these gorgeous rose bushes to plant in honor of a man who was so vital to the passion and drive behind our farm. The man who taught me to love working outside and supported me in everything I ever wanted to do. If it weren’t for him giving us his tractor, greenhouse and constant support we would not have been able to begin this farming venture. His favorite color was yellow, probably because it was the only color that was as bright, loud and happy as he was. May these roses fill our farmhouse and remind us of you, Grandfather. 💛 #yellow #yellowroses #inlovingmemory #grandfather
First batch of gorgeous ranunculus coming out of our new hoop house headed to @pinestateflowers. We have made a lot of rookie mistakes in our first winter growing in our hoop house and are already looking forward to doing better next winter!! In this cold March it is a wonderful reminder that spring is just around the corner!!!! #springforthfarm #springiscoming #bhgflowers #flowerfarmer #localflowers #sustainablefarming #mysouthernliving #visitnc #gottobencflowers #ncflowerfarm
This is a room in my basement with plastic up on 2 sides to keep the room warm and humidity higher. I added a 3rd rack this year. There are 5 shelves on one rack. Each rack holds 20 seed trays. This year I am focusing on fine tuning what I grow for my June through October sales. I need to also focus on how to improve my seed starting area for next year. I know a greenhouse would be nice, but I do not want to spend all that money. This room is fine for starting seedlings. I will probably use another room and add additional lighting to that room, so the seedlings receive 16 hours of light. This would give me more space, and I would be able to provide better air circulation. Something to look forward to for next year! This is going to be a cold week. It was 28 degrees this morning. Looks like several nighttime lows in the 20’s this week. I hope I can do some planting by the weekend. #seedlings #seedstarting #seedtovase #growsomething #springiscoming at Garden Bee Flower Farm
We dread windy days and we just had our windiest one in the four years we've been out here. The great windstorm tossed row cover about. Pieces of tarp were even dragged around with all the sandbags still on them! So you can see we have a lot of cleaning up to do. On the plus side you can see the tarps are done their job killing the cover crops underneath. These tarps were put on one month ago.

One of the benefits of being a #notill farm is that we can prepare beds even when the soil is too wet for tractor work. Yesterday, Megan prepared beds with our trusty garden fork and we transplanted 2300 #coolflowers, including this beautiful stock. Thank you Lisa at @gardenersworkshopfarm for inspiring us to try stock in mini #soilblocks.

Today we’re making the hour and a half drive over to Pittsboro to the Country Farm and Home store because we finally found the organic fertilizers that we need in bulk there! We’ve had to search high and low for a lot of the supplies we need, especially since we are trying to do everything totally organically! We are super excited though because lots of the sweet pea seeds we sowed last week have started to sprout!! 😍🌱🙌🏻 #farmlife #vinelover #givemethevines #organicflowers at Country Farm & Home

#springforthfarm just got certified through the Got to be NC/Goodness Grows in North Carolina program. Our customers who buy directly from the farm already know, of course, but we're hoping more small flower farms will get certified (easy and free) and help us create some social media buzz around the tag #gottobencflowers.

We thought we'd share our germination set up. We were inspired by Lisa Ziegler at @gardenersworkshopfarm. Her book Cool Flowers helped us transform our growing practices and our business. I've been trying to get a picture of this red-shouldered hawk for weeks. We have a pair that we think is nesting in the trees on the farm's edge. They love to perch near our pond. One sits outside our house on a t-post or the chair every morning but it is very flighty and until today it has flown away if I open the doors to get a picture. We are really enjoying the beauty of these birds... And of course they moved in the spring we are planning on getting chickens!!! #farmwildlife #hawks #ncflowerfarm #hurdlemills

Can you find the frog? I wonder where the frogs are now under all the snow.
This little guy, hiding in a Mexican Bush Sage, really startled my when I was cutting flowers last fall. Frogs and toads were very quick to return to our farm in droves as soon as we started our no till farming system. The frogs eat all the beetles and spiders that live in our soil as well as the flying insects that flock to our flowers.
We love seeing all the life that thrives at #springforthfarm. It is one way we know health is returning to our soil.

Our hoop house's first snow storm. One of our goals was to build a hoop house where we could sleep all night without having to get up and knock the snow off and I'd say we got it.
Even though we got 11" of snow yesterday, we didn't have to worry about our hoop house collapsing at all. As you can see, the Gothic peak shed most of the snow. The w-trusses were extra work to put together, but worth it.
We highly recommend the kit we got from Morgan County Seeds.
Thank you to all of our friends who helped us put this hoop house together. We couldn't have done it without you.

One of our missions here at #springforthfarm is to share our abundance with our neighbors. Every two weeks during our growing season we donate crates of produce to the Rougemont Food Pantry. Like all food pantries they can have a hard time finding fresh, healthy produce. We are blessed to have the skills to feed ourselves with wonderful veggies and love sharing that blessing with others.

Hi friends!! We figured it was about time to introduce ourselves here!! We are Alayna and Casey, and we are the faces behind the flower farm! We got engaged last October and are busy planning our wedding that will be here on the farm, among the flowers, this June!!! We both love being outdoors connecting with nature, and Alayna’s serious love of flowers and floral design, combined with Casey’s love of working outside with his hands, allowed the idea of running a flower farm together to blossom! 😂 Sorry, we’re both super corny, so prepare for all the flower and seed puns. We really have no clue what we’re doing, but we’re all-in on this passion project at this point, and are so excited to learn as we go! We both love cozy nights in, cooking dinner together (especially 🌮- we have Taco Tuesday every single week!), and watching Netflix on the couch with our pups. Thanks for following our crazy journey! 💕 #introduction #heyyall #thisisus #farmhands #flowerlovers at Lexington, North Carolina

Our greenhouse is definitely a work in progress right now, but we plan to have it up and running come mid-January so that we can get thousands of seeds started growing! This way once Spring comes we will be a step ahead of the game and put already growing seedlings into the ground instead of just seeds. This will be our very first attempt at seed starting so keep your fingers crossed for us!! 🤞🏻 #greenhouse #seedstarting #growstuff #organic
The cut flower field is quiet right now. I have pastel, paprika, and yellow yarrow, ammi (queen’s anne lace), and snapdragons out in the field. They have survived temperatures as low as 22 degrees and 4 ½ inches of snow. I did cover my tuberose with about an inch or so of mulch because we can have a few 9 degree night time lows in the winter. Weather is so unpredictable. Like today, after having a week of cool days in the 40’s, we may reach 63 degrees! Next week, it looks like we will be below average in the 40’s and 30’s so I better enjoy today! These 20 rows are ready and waiting for spring. When I started the cut flower field in 2015, my pH was around 5.0. I just received my soil tests from the NC Agriculture Department. My pH is now 6.8 which is fine for flowers. Ideally you try to keep your pH between 6.2 and 6.7. A soil test also measures the ability that your soil can hold nutrients called Cation Exchange Capacity (CEC). Ideally you want your CEC to be 25. My CEC was 4.5 to 5.1 when I first started. Now it is 21.6 to 26.0 in field 1 and 11.8 to 16.4 in field 2. This was my first-year planting in field 2 and this is where I have been putting down more plant based compost this fall. My phosphorus and potassium levels were high due to all the compost I have added to the field. The soil test only advises to add nitrogen. I will use feather meal in the spring which is an organic nitrogen fertilizer. Soil tests can save you money by avoiding the purchase of fertilizers that the soil does not need! #soiltesting #silagetarp #weedsuppression #farmlife #flowerfarmer #farmliving at Garden Bee Flower Farm
Our first snowfall at the farm was pretty beautiful, and the pups had a lot of fun. We were super worried about our little sprouts of anemone and ranunculus that were hiding under our frost covers though. Luckily we think there were only a few that didn’t survive, but it was most likely thanks to Casey going out in the early morning to shovel snow off the frost covers and repair the damages. #survivedthestorm #frostprotection #farmhouse #farm #rooster

I am still putting down compost in the field. It has been a dry month. I try to complete as much as possible in the fall in case we have a wet spring. I decided to purchase another 50 x 100 foot silage tarp. We are cutting the tarp into 3 pieces. Each tarp will be 16.8 feet which will cover 4 rows. We will use sand bags filled with compost to keep the silage tarp in place. I will now have 24 rows covered and ready for the spring. Not an exciting picture but next year these dahlia tubers will produce beautiful blooms if they make it through the winter! I have finished dividing the tubers. The tubers are in boxes with sphagnum peat moss in a room in the basement. I have a thermometer that also reads humidity in the room. Dahlia tubers need to stay around 40 to 50 degrees with a humidity of 80%. I have a couple of buckets of water in the room to help bring up the humidity. I will check on them monthly to make sure they are not shriveling up due to a lack of moisture. #dahliatubers #dahlia #endofseason #flowerfarmer #farmlife #gardenlife #ncflowerfarm at Garden Bee Flower Farm

We are putting down UV-treated polyethylene silage tarps in the cut flower field. I would not be able to manage our half acre field without them. Silage tarps kill the weeds when left on for at least 6 weeks in the winter. They also protect the field from soil erosion. I do not have to worry about weeding the field and this allows me to focus on other chores on the farm. In the Spring when I am ready to plant, I just pull the tarp off a couple weeks prior to planting and put down some feathermeal for a slow release organic nitrogen fertilizer. I have also used cover crops for weed suppression and to stop soil erosion. They both do a great job! #weedsuppression #silagetarps #flowerfarmer #flowerfarm #farmlife #farmliving #growyourown #womenwhofarm #garden #livethelittlethings at Garden Bee Flower Farm

I woke up so sad this morning. Rosie our dog is still with us which is wonderful and excruciating. Her tumor is so huge yet she still comes down to the farm and is eating and such. But I think mostly it's the pain pills that keep her going right now. It's very sad and we've been so busy that it's just been kind of life as normal with lots of extra loving devoted to her. Now the flowers are ending and that always gives me such anxiety and this year it feels extra heavy and scary. I've been trying to live in the moment and hold space for all the feelings and sometimes doing a good job of that and lots of times not. Today my son made us laugh so hard that it opened up my heart enough to let the light shine in. Then this guy- the heart of the farm- came to me with this bundle of beauty and I felt so peaceful for a minute and remembered who I was and what we were trying to do and why we were working so hard and all of it and all the love we have for one another and our animal companions and it just felt good for a moment. And so I guess that's how it goes. at Lady Luck Flower Farm
This will be my last week selling flowers to florists. These sunflowers were planted on 8/27 and 8/29 and are now blooming. We had three night time lows of 37 degrees which did not affect them. However, it is the shorter days that are really affecting the growth of the sunflowers. The sunflowers I planted on 9/3 are very short with small sunflower heads. Some of the stems are not as strong as they should be. It probably did not help that we had 10 days of cloudy weather at the beginning of October. #sunflowers #flowerfarmer #flowerfarminglife #fallflowers #slowflowers #localflowers #nccutflowers #shorterdays at Garden Bee Flower Farm
