“A master of disguise... The Pilbara Death Adder is known to have the fastest strike of any snake in the world!” says photographer Lewis Burnett @huntingforparadise. “They are capable of striking twice before the average human even has time to react! However this one was a little chiller and spent about 10 minutes sunning itself on a rock in Cape Range National Park, Western Australia, before slowly slithering off into the bush, completely unphased by my presence.” Thanks for sharing your pic with us Lewis!⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ @sonyalpha.anz ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Sony A7Riii + Tamron 28-75mm ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 1/500, f/2.8, ISO 400⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ #huntingforparadise #caperangenationalpark #ningaloo #ningalooreef #ningaloomarinepark #snake #deathadder #snakesofinstagram #herping #herpphotography #reptilesofinstagram #reptiles #reptilesofaustralia #australia #westernaustralia #wildlifephotography #wildlife #wildlifephotographer

Open wide This is what it looks like inside a Manta Ray's mouth... Those fuzzy black gill rakers in the back there are also the reason these beautiful animals are killed! Traditional Chinese medicine states that these rakers cure cancer, it's this false belief that drives the hunting of them all over the world... @sonyalpha.anz Sony A7Riii + Samyang 14mm 1/400, f/5.6, ISO 400

Manta Ray's played an enormous part of my year in 2019... I was lucky enough to swim with them almost every day for 9 months straight whilst living on the Ningaloo reef ! Although there is a healthy population of these sentient animals they are unfortunately threatened by increasing boat tours and public boat traffic scaring them out of their natural feeding grounds... Hopefully these caronavirus shut downs give these majestic mantas a much needed break in Coral Bay !

To celebrate World Frog Day, we would like to introduce you to the desert tree frog (Litoria rubella). You’ll need to look closely, as these little frogs only grow to about 6cm in size! Found across most of the northern half of Australia, and in southern New Guinea, their preferred habitat is near bodies of water, sheltering beneath stones, bark and logs. The best way to know if a desert tree frog is nearby is by listening for them. They have a very distinct call which sounds just like a seagull! Fantastic photo by @grantgriffinphotography #worldfrogday #frog #treefrog #deserttreefrog #frogetaboutit#wildlife #caperange #caperangenationalpark #nature #conservation #ningaloocoastworldheritagearea #ningaloocoast #worldheritage #ningaloomarinepark #unesco #unescoworldheritage #waparkswildlife #exploreparkswa #australia #visitningaloo #westernaustralia #australiascoralcoast

It’s been a week since we experienced the March full moon, which means we are all now eagerly awaiting one of the world’s largest reproductive events, known as coral spawning, which happens along the Ningaloo Coast around this time each year. Coral spawning is a phenomenon which occurs at night, after rising water temperatures have stimulated the maturation of gametes (eggs and sperm) within the coral polyps. During these annual events, many colonies and species of coral polyps simultaneously release gametes into the surrounding waters for external fertilisation. This is not only an impressive sight to see, but also a critical process in reef recolonisation. So if you are in the area, keep your eyes out whilst snorkelling around, you may just get lucky! Beautiful photo by @thenakedakubra #coral #coralspawn #love #ocean #coast #ningalooreef #nature #underwater #conservation #ningaloocoastworldheritagearea #ningaloocoast #worldheritage #ningaloomarinepark #unescoworldheritage #waparkswildlife #exploreparkswa #australia #visitningaloo#westernaustralia #australiascoralcoast

The Cape Range consists of limestone anchialine pools and coastal, groundwater caves which are landlocked at the surface. Below the surface there are water-filled networks of cave passages where subterranean connections to the ocean have formed. These interconnected freshwater and anchialine systems have allowed for the movement of marine invertebrates from nearshore marine to karst environments over time, with the Cape Range providing habitat for many rare species of stygofauna that can still be found today. Life as we know it would be impossible without groundwater. Groundwater Awareness Week (8th-14th March) is shining light on the important and unique water bodies that exist throughout the world and the need to protect and preserve this natural resource. Beautiful photo by @what.a.bird.sees of creeks in Gales Bay #groundwaterawarenessweek #groundwater #water #naturalresource #karst #marine #freshwater #stygofauna #caperange #caperangenationalpark #nature #conservation #ningaloocoastworldheritagearea #ningaloocoast #worldheritage #ningaloomarinepark #unesco #unescoworldheritage #waparkswildlife #exploreparkswa #australia #visitningaloo #westernaustralia #australiascoralcoast

We are celebrating this year’s World Wildlife Day with the theme “sustaining all life on earth”. 2020 has become known as the “biodiversity super year”. Events being held worldwide are aiming to address global sustainable development challenges with nature-based solutions and are acknowledging the importance of conserving and sustainably using wild animals and plants. In an ever-changing and uncertain world, today reminds us to make conscious decisions which ensure the preservation of this irreplaceable and fragile ecosystem so future generations can experience some of the wonders we are lucky enough to have right here in our own backyard. Incredible photo by @bluemediaexmouth of the Ningaloo Coast, our backyard #worldwildlifeday #WWD2020 #wildlife #biodiversity #plants #animals #species #preservation #environment #sustainability #conservation #ocean #ningalooreef #climatechange #ningaloocoastworldheritagearea #ningaloocoastworldheritage #ningaloocoast #worldheritage #ningaloo #caperangenationalpark #ningalooreef #ningaloomarinepark #unescoworldheritagesite #unescoworldheritage #waparkswildlife #exploreparkswa #australia #visitningaloo#westernaustralia #australiascoralcoast

What are you up to this Clean Up Australia Day? We know that it takes more than one day to solve Australia’s waste challenges, which is why Clean Up Australia Day now focuses on not only removing rubbish from our environments but preventing it from entering these areas in the first place. Clean Up Australia has evolved into an organisation that works with community, government and businesses to provide practical solutions to help us all live more sustainably every day of the year. Beautiful photo by @kyliessv of one of our favourite Aussie animals. Have you visited the Vlamingh Head Lighthouse? The lookout from this iconic lighthouse boasts some of the best views of the Northwest Cape and is one of the only places in Australia where you can watch the sun both rise and set over the ocean. We love dolphins here on the Ningaloo Coast! Bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncates) have a brain to body size ratio second only to humans. Their brains contain specialized cells called spindle neurons that are associated with advanced abilities such as recognising, remembering, reasoning, communicating, perceiving, adapting to change, problem-solving and understanding. Meaning? They are super smart! In fact, the part of their brain which processes emotions (limbic system) appears to be even more complex than our own. It really makes you wonder what they are thinking when they come to check you out like this friendly dolphin was 😍 Beautiful photo taken by @oceanaimee #dolphin #bottlenosedolphin #intelligence #consciousness #playful #friendly #ocean #coast #ningalooreef #nature #underwater #conservation #ningaloocoastworldheritagearea #ningaloocoast #worldheritage #ningaloomarinepark #unescoworldheritage #waparkswildlife #exploreparkswa #australia #visitningaloo#westernaustralia #australiascoralcoast

When you are in the wild, you can't predict what you will see. So when you finally see what you are hoping for, the surprise is always magical. I've already had the chance to see Manta Ray in Fiji, and I had the chance to see them an other time in Australia and it still magical ! Could you find your way home without a GPS if you were 3,000kms away? What if you had only set foot on land once as a baby… decades ago? Well sea turtles can do just that! Each part of a coastline has its own magnetic signature which hatchlings take an imprint of when they first emerge from beneath the sand. They are able to detect the angle and intensity of the earth’s magnetic field and can use these unique characteristics to return to their natal beach as adults decades later. If you are lucky enough to see turtle hatchlings, make sure you let them make their own way to the ocean so they have time to collect all that information and come back to the Ningaloo Coast in years to come! Gorgeous photo by @bluemediaexmouth of a green turtle hatchling (Chelonia mydas) #seaturtle #turtlehatchling #greenseaturtle #seaturtleconservation #turtle #ocean #ningaloocoastworldheritagearea #ningaloocoastworldheritage #ningaloocoast #worldheritage #ningaloo #caperangenationalpark #ningalooreef #ningaloomarinepark #unescoworldheritagesite #unescoworldheritage #waparkswildlife #exploreparkswa #australia #visitningaloo #westernaustralia

Love isn’t just in the air, but in the water too! These two short-nosed sea snakes (Aipysurus apraefrontalis) were seen courting on the Ningaloo Reef back in 2013, and the pair are still causing a stir today. Not only has this species never been recorded on the Ningaloo Coast before, it’s also the first live sighting of the species since their disappearance in 2002! Whilst this species was predominantly found in the Ashmore and Hibernia Reef systems, this record of a courting pair of snakes could suggest there is a potential breeding population along the Ningaloo Coast. The short-nosed sea snake is listed as critically endangered by the IUCN. If you happen to be lucky enough to see any sea snakes whilst visiting the Ningaloo Coast World Heritage Area make sure you take a picture! They are a special sight that many researchers would like to hear about 😊 Photo by @grantgriffinphotography 🙌 #valentinesday #loveisintheair #love #soulmate #seasnake #snake #courting #iseayou #endangered #ocean #coast #ningalooreef #nature #underwater #conservation #ningaloocoastworldheritagearea #ningaloocoast #worldheritage #ningaloomarinepark #unescoworldheritage #waparkswildlife #exploreparkswa #australia #visitningaloo#westernaustralia #australiascoralcoast

Another gorge’ous spot here..... see what I did there. The Yardie creek Gorge is well worth a look down in the bottom end of the Cape Range National Park. It’s rock walls are home to a lot of animals as well as quite a diverse marine life in the creek itself. The Ningaloo Coast is one of just five World-Heritage-listed sites that has been chosen to pioneer an ambitious new approach to reef management. We recognise that healthy reef ecosystems depend on people, and people depend on healthy reef ecosystems. Resilient Reefs is about bringing together local residents and businesses, reef managers, and resilience experts to strengthen our reef and our community to global and local threats. It’s a chance for people to have a voice in planning the future that we want, and to collaboratively develop innovative ideas for management. You’ll be hearing more about the Resilient Reefs Initiative in coming months. To find out more about the initiative, contact DBCA’s Resilience Officer at [email protected] or join the mailing list. Resilient Reefs is a collaboration between the Great Barrier Reef Foundation, UNESCO World Heritage Marine Programme, The Nature Conservancy, Columbia University’s Center for Resilient Cities and Landscapes, Resilient Cities Catalyst, AECOM and is enabled by the BHP Foundation. The initiative is being delivered in Ningaloo by the Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions. Amazing photo by @alexkyddphoto #resilientreefs #reef #coralreef #coral #conservation #biodiversity #ocean #globalwarming #research #sea #habitat #fish #baitball #underwater #underthesea #ningalooreef #nature #ningaloocoastworldheritagearea #ningaloocoast #worldheritage #ningaloomarinepark #unescoworldheritage #waparkswildlife #exploreparkswa #australia #visitningaloo#westernaustralia #australiascoralcoast

Did you know that 40% of the world’s plant and animal species live or breed in wetlands? These environments provide habitat for a diverse range of flora and fauna, supporting many species which aren’t found anywhere else. Wetlands also contribute to ecosystem resilience, protecting our shores from wave action, absorbing pollutants and improving water quality. We are spoiled here on the Ningaloo Coast with the presence of many wetlands, including our extensive mangrove systems and stunning coral reefs! Let’s celebrate the great value of wetlands and their biodiversity. Spent the morning with a guided tour from this lil' dude🐢

We almost missed seeing this little green turtle! 🐢 • We had just got out from snorkelling around the Five Fingers Reef, which is well known for its abundance of sea turtles - but we missed them! Surprisingly the water was really chilly, top this off with a strong wind on the beach and it was cold.. • We were sat in the car warming up, debating whether to go in for a second time.. but we forced ourselves in (with thermals!!) and are so glad we did! • We spent about 10 minutes just swimming with him whilst he foraged the coral for food and made a couple of surfaces for breath. Magical ✨

Regardless of the humidity and scorching temperature, I'd take this seat over my office chair any day of the week. Itchy feet, looking forward to getting back onto the road soon.

Have you been lucky enough to see a thorny devil (Moloch horridus) whilst visiting the Ningaloo Coast World Heritage Area? These little creatures are incredibly adapted to living in hot, arid regions. Their spiky skin is made up of keratin, just like our fingernails, and changes colour throughout the day from brown-olive to yellow as the desert heats up. When water gets hard to come by, these clever reptiles will bury themselves in damp sand, where moisture condenses on their skin and travels via capillary channels up into their mouths. Essentially allowing them to drink with their skin. Amazing! Fantastic photo taken by @ross_mcgibbon_photography #thornydevil #lizard #reptile #desert #wildlife #caperange #caperangenationalpark #nature #conservation #ningaloocoastworldheritagearea #ningaloocoast #worldheritage #ningaloomarinepark #unesco #unescoworldheritage #waparkswildlife #exploreparkswa #australia #visitningaloo #westernaustralia #australiascoralcoast
