I love the idea of a book cart versus a full blown library, like this photo from @thegypsylibrary! I mean how freaking cute and colorful and a great way to add all those knick knacks and (ahem, fake) plants we like to board! Honestly my book situation in my room has changed so much. From every book being on a visible shelf to a select few on a ladder shelf to hiding 90% of my collection in my rotating mirror shelf stand from Ikea - I have literally done it all. But now I feel like getting rid of the stand and any other shelves and just having a cart. Is it just me or do Sunday nights inspire your inner interior designer too?! How do you store your books?!?! Let me know below Janeites! 💙💚💛💖🖤 . . . . #shelfiesunday #shelfdecor #bookcart #prideandprejudice #romancenovel #senseandsensibility #mansfieldpark #northangerabbey #bookstagram #booksbooksbooks #emmajaneausten #shelfie #janeausten #janeite #charlesdickens #charlottebronte #bookworm #persuasion #austenite #booksandflowers #janeausten #anneofgreengables #bookworms #coffeeandbooks #booksandcoffee #fiction #nonfiction #bookmark #janeeyre #booksandtea #bokshelves

🇬🇧Last month I finished this book, and with everything that's going on on the other side of the world, I highly recommend it to those who want to lean more about the US-Mexico border. There's always two versions to every story, and I think Francisco's memoir conveys this message very clearly. Immigration is such a complex matter, what other books related to this issue do you recommend? - - - - - - - - - - - #book #bookstagram #libros #memoir #leer #franciscocantu #nonfiction #bookcommunity #bookreview #greatreads #bookquotes #bookobsessed #bookworm #bookstagram #instabooks #books #bookish #goodreads #bookshelf #bookshelves #biblioteca #library #writer #escritor #immigration

Three years ago, I watched @aliwong’s stand up Netflix special Baby Cobra. It was a revelation - refreshingly hilarious, uninhibited, and honest. Like many other viewers, she gained an instant fan. Once I found out that she got a book deal, I immediately added it to my must-read list. To say I was excited when I received a copy of DEAR GIRLS is an understatement. Thank you to @randomhouse for the free copy! . In DEAR GIRLS Wong writes a series of letters to her two daughters. Each chapter/essay covers a different topic, from pregnancy, studying abroad, relationships, marriage, family, and working in the entertainment industry, offering personal anecdotes and advice. Like her stand up, the book is uproarious and bold, but also sincere and more unguarded as she reveals more about her past and how that informs her material. . Some of her most insightful perspectives comes from her stories as a female stand-up comedian. Besides constant rejection and risk-taking in front of an audience, there are safety concerns. Stand-up requires perseverance and a willingness to fail, advice that applies to girls of all ages. Also, I appreciate Wong’s thoughts on of being an Asian American female in Hollywood and the double-edged sword of representation. She’s aware of what her image means and how Asian culture influences her, but at the same time doesn’t want to be limited by it. Her success comes from both embracing and letting going of the “Asian American female” label and focusing on overcoming failure and working on her craft. . Fans can look forward to the touching afterword from her husband Justin, who is a significant part of her act. . Overall, I smiled and/or burst out laughing all throughout reading Dear Girls. If you love Ali Wong, you will love and admire her even more! Make sure you pick up a copy this TUESDAY, OCTOBER 15! . As always, I had a great time discussing this book with these ladies @aquietnook @sachireads @theshriekingstack @wellreadhuman @postgradreads, bringing our different POVs to Wong’s stories. . . #readtmc #deargirls #aliwong

Fascinating story of three influential Americans in England during World War II and how they influenced the relationship between Britain and the United States. Olsen writes about Edward R. Murrow, journalist; Averell Harriman, millionaire in charge of the Lend-Lease program; and John Gilbert Winant, the U.S. ambassador to Britain. I was riveted throughout, but I also spent so much of my time in this book incredulous that I’d never heard of Winant before. At such a perilous time in history, he was a dedicated public servant—hardworking and earnest and passionate. Tragic that his efforts and words didn’t play a greater role in my history classes. But overall, this is a great read if you’re interested in this time period. #citizensoflondon #lynneolson #secondhandbooks #usedbooks #greatread #nonfiction #WWII #johngilbertwinant #edwardrmurrow

Trade paperback, good condition. Signet Books, 1965/1980. 384 pages. Truman Capote’s painstakingly researched account of the true story of the Clutter family murders in Holcomb, Kansas, helped spawn a new genre of literary nonfiction. Considered one of the first #truecrime works, Capote brings his considerable skill and understanding of human tendencies to this story, which was a bestseller and reads like a novel. $5. I started this autobiography yesterday, and it is brilliant. #WildGameMyMotherHerLoverandMe is a fabulous read about #AdrienneBrodeur's relationship with her mother, and how at 14, Brodeur became her mother's confidante and helpmate in her mom's decade long affair. This isn't some steamy tell-all. It's about the guilt that Brodeur carried and how it impacted her own marriage until she ultimately found peace. I wept for her...the brokenness she felt, the weight of it all. It is truly a story that needs to be read. #bookofthemonth #nonfiction

My kids are non-fiction junkies. Especially anything related to nature, they just soak it up. This is a fun one that is fairly new to us. The kids love lift-the-flap books and this question and answer series is great. The chunks of information are easy enough for my 4 year old to understand and absorb. Did you know that the act of lifting flaps adds an action to the learning experience and helps children retain what they read? #nonfiction #childrensbooks #usborne #questionsandanswers #lifttheflap #learning #thecaffeinatedbooklady

"I had often before said this, that if the Indians should come, I should choose rather to be killed by them, then taken alive; but when it came to the trial, my mind changed; their glittering weapons so daunted my spirit, that I chose rather to go along with those (as I may say) ravenous bears, than that moment to end my days. And that I may the better declare what happened to me during that grievous captivity, I shall particularly speak of the several Removes we had up and down the wilderness." #NarrativeOfTheCaptivityAndRestorationOfMrsMaryRowlandson #Mary Rowlandson - - - Written in 1682, six years after her 11-week kidnapping during King Philip's War (also known as Metacomet's War), Narrative of the Captivity and Restoration of Mrs. Mary Rowlandson was America's first "bestseller," as well as the first work of prose by an American woman published. Through a preface (quoted above) and Twenty Removes, Mary Rowlandson recounts memories of survivalism, faith, and racism (even if she would not have seen it that way). Her captivity narrative sparked a wave of other works in this genre.

Blink covers the importance of trusting our gut and the level of understanding we can glean about people, places or situations in short spaces of time. As someone who second guesses many of my decisions I was drawn to the premise. Certain chapters left me almost unnerved about the level to which micro-behaviours or aspects of our communication can (to some) predict our future relationships with one another. A key take away is that gaining more and more information about something or someone is not the same as understanding it/them. We tend to value information gathering more than our own initial experiences, which Gladwell argues can often give us a clearer picture.

Nationalism is one of two my favourite topics; started learning since I was in my grad school. I am not much impressed from the narratives built by states. Recently, read the idea and need of Nationalism by Yual Noah Harari that totally make sense. . Here is a wonderfully penned down book, Nationalism, written in poetic prose. This is a collection of lectures delivered by the Rabindranath Tagore during the World War 1. It is relatable and holds high relevance even today’s scenario of growing intolerance among races/nations/civilisations. . This bold account is on Asian Civilisation; and how western nations have took the rights and freedom of the world to meet their evil desires. . RNT wrote” for centuries we did hold the torches of civilisation in the east when the west slumbered in darkness ... the political civilisation which has sprung up from the soil of Europe and is overrunning the whole world, like some prolific weed... it feed upon the resources of other peoples and tries to swallow their whole future... it is powerful because it concentrates all its forces upon one purpose, like a millionaire acquiring money at the cost of his soul...” . Even west claims to be more tolerant, yet you will feel a fear when they discuss the possibilities of rise of east. Reason is obvious, they can’t even imagine facing same what they have done with the rest of the world. ... the west is “naturally unwilling to open its sources of power to those whom it has selected for its purpose of exploitation... “ . . Even in today’s world, people live under the imagination of freedom and liberty, yet there are extremely limited opportunities, and even there is only allotted education by the state; the grip is tight to the point of suffocation. Yet people live under the illusion of freedom. . Present age suffering is not limited to races; people are hyponotised into believing that they are free. . “the eternal light will shine again in the the east” . Q: Do you agree that even in today’s world we have access to only allotted education, and people living under the illusion of liberty? . . #backtoreading #pakistanreadersinitiative #pakistanreads #tagore #rabindranath

For the past several months, we've been inundated with countless transitions. Despite neglecting to promptly post my reads, I've still been reading, so this is a catch-up post! I'm going to (try to) make it brief, but I don't share just my favorites here because, while I realize everyone's tastes are different, I also want readers to know what they're in for, so they can steward their time well. The Color of Compromise ⭐⭐⭐⭐ This will be my longest review out of the 7. I listened to this on Audible, but think it's worth a physical book for notes/reference. Although I know a great deal about American history already, there was still much to learn here. Tisby graciously outlines the church's complicity in racism and does a superb job with anticipating all the counterarguments and also explaining how racist thinking was ever justified by purported Christians in the first place. Particularly, many resist the idea that our culture currently struggles with the effects of racism (but just consider the effects of blockbusting, redlining, the GI bill, etc.). Tisby builds his case well. I did take issue with some hasty generalizations and calls to action in the last chapter of the book. We must also consider that he is being selective with history (reducing and explaining the Civil War with such brevity, for example). This still comes highly recommended. The Blue Castle ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ The Kindle version is free for this one, and it surprisingly earned a spot as one of my favorite reads this past year (right along with "Educated," "Before We Were Yours," and "We Were the Lucky Ones." The writing, the plot, the humor, the characters--all so winsome. Love Does ⭐⭐⭐ ⭐ I also listened to this on Audible. Bob Goff is in the same theological camp as Donald Miller, and while I've always loved how they've turned comfortable American Christianity on its head, I'm not going to vouch for this as a book of deep theological truisms. But, on a surface level, it's very inspiring and the stories had me getting side-eye at stoplights as I was chortling. This one is also kid-friendly with short chapters, so it's perfect to listen to while running errands. Cont'd in comments 👇

My Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ ... I really enjoyed this ONE DRESS. ONE YEAR . It gave me a lot to think about, and it changed the way I look at human trafficking. Who knew that slavery was still just as horrific as it once was? It broke my heart and woke me up to something that I want to do something about. ... I will say that I felt like the book ended up being more about the author's own freedom from insecurity than the freedom she advocated for through the black dress, but that's the only complaint I can come up with. Definitely would recommend this to young girls looking to make a difference for the kingdom and are passionate about ending modern day slavery. ... Note: Yes, I’m breaking the autumn theme... What can I say, I’m rebel. 😆 ... Stay Stellar, Micaiah 💕 #bethanywinz #onedressoneyear #bookstagram #christianbook #nonfiction #book #endhumantrafficking

@randomhouse kindly shared copies of Ali Wong’s upcoming memoir DEAR GIRLS with my dear (Asian American) book club (@read_tmc, @sachireads, @wellreadhuman, @aquietnook, @postgradreads). We had a blast reading, cackling, and discussing. ⁣ ⁣ You might know Ali Wong from her Netflix standup specials, or more recently from her Netflix film ALWAYS BE MY MAYBE, which captured my goddamn heart and had me tearing up over a bowl of 김치찌개. DEAR GIRLS, a memoir written in the form of a essays to her two daughters Mari and Nikki, is delightfully raw reading experience. Wong chronicles her love life and “crazy years,” her C-sections and post-labor experiences, her Vietnamese/Chinese immigrant family life, and her struggles trying to break into the white, male-dominated area of standup (and the sexism and racism from the assholes who told her she was lucky to be able to do the ~Asian girl niche thing~). ⁣ ⁣ Wong is graphic and real, unafraid to lay her insecurities and shortcomings bare. I could definitely hear her voice while reading it. She’s unapologetically herself, both hilarious and heartfelt. I enjoyed the essay about the formative part of her young adulthood studying in Vietnam (her mother’s country). Her writing about Asian American culture and her struggles in comedy were less hilarious but incredibly important. Side note, I loved her chart of what to watch out for when trying to spot an authentic Asian restaurant, with a column for several different ethnicities. ⁣ ⁣ I could have done without hearing from Wong’s husband at the end of the book; it was jarring in comparison. But I understand why she wanted to include him. DEAR GIRLS is out on Tuesday! 🐍🐍🐍🐍/5

Qotd: what’s a genre you don’t really read much? • Nonfiction is a genre that I don’t really read at all. It’s just a genre that I can’t get into and I don’t know if I will ever get into it🙈 I read Anna Kendrick’s book and it was okay, I didn’t really like it. I also read I am Malala and I actually enjoyed that one more than I thought I would which took me by a bit of surprise • Thank you @booksparks for sending me a copy of Just a Girl: Growing up Female and Ambitious! This book is on my #spookathon tbr and I’m looking forward to reading it. Even though I’m not a giant fan of nonfiction I have a feeling I’m going to enjoy this one! • Synopsis: Just A Girl is the sensitive, personal story of the author’s ambition to become and succeed as a scientist during the “white man in power” era of the 1950s to 2010s. In the male-dominated science world, she struggles from girlhood unworthiness to sexist battles in jobs on the farms and in the restaurants of America, in academia’s laboratories and field research communities, and in the executive corner office. Jackson overcomes pain, shame, and self-blame, learns to believe in herself when others don’t, and becomes a champion for others. The turbulent legal and social background of sexual harassment and sexism in America over seven decades is delivered as “history with emotion.” Just a Girl is also a call to action: it identifies the court cases and lawsuits that helped advance the cultural changes we see today; outlines the pressing need for a Boys and Men Liberation (BAML) movement; highlights new approaches by parents; advocates for changes in our universities; and suggests a different direction for corporate America to take to stop the cycle of sexual harassment. Eye-opening and inspiring, it points the way to a brighter future for women everywhere. • #justagirl #lucindajackson #booksparks #booksharks #memoir #nonfiction #girlboss #iammalala #scrappylittlenobody #womenempowerment #reading #ilovebooks #readingislit #bookblogger #bookblogging #flatlay #bookishflatlay #bibliophile #biblio #booknerd #bookbookbook

This sweet edition from 1964 is in my shop. It’s a facsimile of the original manuscript version of Alice in Wonderland.

The super glamorous book writing process begins with an outline. On office carpet. With index cards. I swear to God it feels like starting a new romantic relationship. It’s exciting and you think about it all the time but you’re also kind of terrified because you may get hurt and you know you’ll have a fight one day and it’d be easier to just be a cat lady. But you follow your heart anyway. You feel me, fellow creators? #amwriting #writingcommunity #nonfiction #memoir

Happy Sunday, here’s a wonky photo for you to feast your eyes on. I’m not in a reading slump so much as I just have chosen not to read much this week. Here’s 3 books I’m in the mood for. Bit of a mixture.... historical fiction about Alexander the Great, a fun horror and Soviet Union history! I read The Persian Boy (the second in the trilogy because I’m wild) earlier this year and I’d say it’s probably my favourite read of the year so I’d like to get to this soon as it’s the first in the trilogy! I also read Red Famine by Applebaum this year and loved it, a truly horrific account of the famine in Ukraine under soviet control. Then finally maybe something a little seasonal, I’ve pretty much only heard good things about My Best Friend’s Exorcism. Knowing me I won’t read any of these and binge some more contemporary women’s fiction cause I’m loving a happy read atm!

I finished ”Born a Crime: Stories from a South African Childhood” by @trevornoah yesterday. A very comical book that takes you through what he lived being a mixed child( a crime at the time) during the last few years of apartheid in South Africa and the aftermath of its. I loved how he and his mom turned anything bad that happened to them into humor and how they never saw themselves as victims through the situations they were put on or chosen themselves. I also like how he manipulated people by speaking several languages. With this I mean he would trick people to think he was part of their tribes by speaking to them in their language, so they wouldn’t harm him: ”I soon learned that the quickest way to bridge the race gap was through language.” Additionally, the laws in South Africa were CRAZY!!! 😱 These laws made tribes dislike each other. #bookstagram #book #books #bornacrime #trevornoah #nonfictionbooks #nonfiction #autobiography

... How do you prepare for NaNo? ✔I start prepping the day after the prior years NaNo win ✔I use a workbook during the month of October ✔I wait until the last day to quickly jot down ideas ✔Who needs prepping? 😏 ✔Other? (Comment below!) @nataliaaleigh created an amazing workbook that I am not yet fortunate enough to purchase (but I will, don't you worry!). Her 2018 workbook was amazing! 🤯🙌🏻 This year, I am prepping better than last year. I started analysing The Dominion, only to choose my non-fiction project to work on, and almost have a cohesive outline. Then I have some reading and research to aquire and I'll be golden! 👌🏻 What are you working on this year? Let's be NaNo buddies! 🎉 . . . . . . . Newspeak Press: @newspeak_press_editing . My planned reading list has more or less been thrown out the window this month. Oops? @quercusbooks @riverrun_books gifted me this copy of Unfollowed by @meganmarie a few days ago - thanks guys! It’s been one I’ve been eying up ever since I first heard about it. I’m too impatient to wait to read it, so I’m going to start it this evening. . Unfollow is Megan’s story of her bringing up in the Westboro Baptist Church, and how she eventually come to reject and leave the church- her family. . #bookstagram #bibliophile #booklove #instaread #readersofinstagram #booklove #unfollow #meganphelpsroper #westborobaptistchurch #nonfiction #memoir #tbr #currentlyreading #whattoreadnext #readinginbed #myweekendisallbooked #sarahs89reads #guardianbooks

Widely lauded and rightfully hyped, once I got into Educated I couldn’t put it down. Aside from Westover’s perseverance over her (intense) upbringing & experiences, what got me the most about this memoir were the moments that touch on the fallibility of memory and the contradiction of shared experiences in the family unit. Families by nature are their own time capsules, serving as reservoirs of time and memory for the collective, so what do we make of the moments that fracture and exist in opposition of, well, themselves? Westover allows some of these moments to exist side-by-side, suggesting that sometimes the truth of memory resides in a liminal space. Recommended for: people who dig an inspirational story without a saccharine overtone, fans of memoir, or those interested in exploring memoir as a genre.

Well, I completed this book today and was contemplating the right kind of words to pen down. I do love non-fiction reads be it belongs to self-help books, business reads, biographies or autobiographies, books on mind or life. I read all the styles of non-fiction. But Indistractable wasn’t the book for me. . Indistractable focuses on the reduction of distractions that is mainly caused by the use of technology and gadgets. It comprises of easy to read short chapters with further sections talking about dealing with distractions from within, reimagining internal triggers, hacking back external triggers, workplace distractions, having Indistractable relationships and, etc. etc. . The first few chapters were compelling, my interest was building up, but as I moved further to the next chapters, it looked like the addition of content was only done with the purpose to increase the volume of the book. It also includes a lot of research material just to present facts but I couldn’t understand how it is useful as a solution or benefits the readers. It is merely like a collection of numerous anecdotes. . I found a lot of positive reviews of the book online, so some of you might like the book, but it wasn’t a great read for me. I recommend reading both reviews before picking it up to read. . What style of non-fiction do you guys look forward to, Biographies or autobiographies, self-help, spiritual or any other? How was your weekend? . #octoberreads #booksbooksbooks #books #bookstagramfeatures #bookcommunity #bookworld
