Let me introduce you to the 16th century Swedish heroine Kristina Gyllenstierna. She was married to the Swedish regent Sten Sture the Younger, and famously led the Swedish resistance against Christian II of Denmark after the death of her spouse in 1520. The Danish King Christan II planned to invade Stockholm to become king over Sweden. In late May 1520, the Danish fleet arrived and the city of Stockholm was besieged by land and sea by the Danes. Lady Kristina emerged as the leader of the Sture party and took command of the city and Castle of Stockholm. She secured support from the majority of the peasantry and burgher classes, and received the loyalty from the commanders of the realm. After several months of being under siege, Kristina was persuaded to capitulate in exchange for a letter of amnesty. King Christian II was proclaimed king Christian I of Sweden, followed by his coronation in Storkyrkan and three days of festivities attended by the Swedish nobility. What happens next is another story, leading up to what we today know as the Stockholm Bloodbath. Be sure to follow along as I will tell you more about that dreadful event in one of my upcoming posts. You can see the statue of Kristina Gyllenstierna in the outer courtyard of the Royal Palace of Stockholm. at The Royal Palace Stockholm

Experience the Woodland Cemetery - Skogskyrkogården - one of three UNESCO world heritage sites in Stockholm. It is considered one of the most important creations of modern architecture, designed by the two architects Gunnar Asplund and Sigurd Lewerentz in the 1915’s. The cemetery forms an harmonic piece of ground, combining nature, comfort and artistic ornamentation. This famous low rise hill topped with a square ring of trees, is an inspiration from the painting ”Hill and Ploughed Field near Dresden” by Caspar David Friedrich. Go ahead and google it and see for yourself 😊 at Skogskyrkogården

Wintertage in #Bergen.

One of the top signs that spring is around the corner here in Stockholm, is when people come to the bustling square Nytorget in SoFo. Here they enjoy the sun, relaxed seated on the pathway alongside the old, red, wooden 18th and 19th Century houses. These remaining houses are a reminder of how Stockholm used to look some 200 years ago. At that time, this was Stockholm’s poor, working class distric and the houses had very low sanitary standards. However today, this area - SoFo - is one of the city’s hottest neighbourhoods. The vibe is relaxed, creative and trendy. Although the area is small in size, it is bursting in seems with things to do and see, offering plenty lively cafés and hip bars. Maybe you wonder about the name? Well, SoFo is a pun on SoHo in London and New York, meaning the district South of Folkungagatan in the now-gentrified island of Södermalm. at Södermalm

The Royal Palace is located on the north side of the Old Town, right in the heart of Stockholm. It was built between 1697-1754 and the architect Nicodemus Tessin was inspired by the roman baroque style as he created the architecture. This is the second Palace situated in this place, the first palace was called The Three Crowns and was destroyed in a raging fire on May 7th, 1697. The Palace is a living museum, many of the rooms are still in use by the royal family when excersicing their official duties and representation. It is unique amongst Europe’s royal residences because of its combination of royal residence, a workplace and a cultural-historical monument open year around. However, King Carl XVI Gustaf and Queen Silvia live in Drottningholm Palace, about 30 minutes outside the city. at The Royal Palace Stockholm

I love Stockholm and the feeling of happiness I get when strolling through the city. The awareness and appreciation that this is where i belong fills me with gratitude. I am so privileged that I can call Stockholm my home and live my life here. Stockholm is a unique place, built on islands surrounded by glittering water. This image is taken from Monteliusvägen, a small path just minutes away from the bustling cafés and hip bars in Södermalm. This view is over the Old Town, the historic centre of the city. Along the walkway there are several terraces and park benches, and you will also see some old houses in a setting that feels like a Stockholm from past centuries. Monteliusvägen is an ideal location for romantic dates, evening strolls, lunch breaks or jogging. at Monteliusvägen

Would you like to know why Stockholm is called Stockholm? Well, this is a rhetorical question, I’m about to explain it to you in this post 😉 It’s more of a puzzle really how Stockholm got its name and it has led to a number of different options and tales. If we simply translate the name itself, ”Stock” means log or pole, and ”Holm” means island. The second part of the name makes sense since Stockholm was established on the island we today know as the Old Town. But the ”Stock” part of the name is more of a riddle. One of the main suggestions for where the name came from, is that in the 13th Century, when Stockholm was founded, the city used logs and poles in order to block shipping routes into the archipelago. This was likely both for defence as well as for charging some kind of toll for people wanting to access the city. at Norrbro
