What do I need right now? This question is one of the most important self care questions you can ask yourself on a daily basis. Your body always communicates with you. Aches, pains and emotions are messages your body sends you to pay attention and take care. Find stillness and ask yourself: what do I need right now? Perhaps it’s rest, food, water, going for a walk, a bath or maybe it’s removing yourself from a stressful situation? Instead of ‘pushing through’, respect your bodies needs and give her the best care you can. Having a good relationship with my body means I can recognize her unique signals. Yesterday afternoon I experienced a mild sore throat, I knew it’s my body’s way of telling me I need to slow down. My initial auto pilot reaction was to push myself a bit more as next week I’m taking some time off. But before I even noticed, I was making myself a big cup of tea and called it a day. (Woke up this morning feeling much better!) I want to remind you, specially at this time of the year, not to put yourself last, not to push through and choose for radical self care 💕

You can go to the gym, drink your water and take your vitamins, but if you don’t deal with the sh*t going on inside of your head and heart, you’re still going to be unhealthy. . . Why is this so? . . When you stub your toe, the pain you feel makes you walk crooked. You didn’t walk like this before, but now you’ve been hurt, and everything in the room now revolves around this stubbed toe pain. You become aware of your surroundings and walk more carefully.. you certainly don’t want to hit your toe again. . . This toe pain awareness changes how you behave, how you move, it changes your perceptions. . . You now create your life from a place of this pain awareness. It unconsciously becomes the center of everything. . . Emotional pain is the same, except it doesn’t go away unless we WORK THROUGH it. We get hurt and walk through the rest of our lives with this same level of avoidance and fear of being hurt again, except this is actually very limiting. . . We put up walls. We react defensively, we shut people out, we become overly sensitive, we put wounds on top of wounds on top of wounds, we create beliefs about ourselves that aren’t even true bc we can’t see clearly, we only want to avoid more pain. But this pain actually rules us. . . In terms of your health: You cannot be healthy if you don’t deal with your pain bc you will CREATE from this place of pain. It gives you a new identity. It takes peeling back the layers & facing it - finding the blessing in the pain, finding where the universe was actually trying to protect you from something, finding the perception to shift, understanding how this pain can show you a deeper part of yourself you wouldn’t have seen any other way had it not been for that very experience. Evolving through it. You miss so much of the magic of your life when you create from pain simply because of the fear of being hurt again. . . This time of year brings up sooooo much for me in terms of food, my body and how I feel about the two (anyone else?! 🙋🏻‍♀️). Emotional eating is easily triggered around the holidays- so much good food and lots of family and friends around making us feel all kinds of ways... good and bad...that lead us to stuff our faces instead of feel our hearts. Emotional eating has deep unconscious roots. I’ve found the more I consciously affirm how much I love and appreciate my body the less attached to food I feel. You have to choose to reprogram your beliefs about food and nourishing your body - essential to break the cycle of emotional eating. I believe so many of us women struggle with food. It doesn’t matter how old you are, how big or small your waist is, the color of your skin- if you’re a woman the odds are that you’ve had an unhealthy relationship with food at some point in time. SO! Since you’re not alone... the next holiday party you have- think about your body and how you want to feel inside, instead of telling yourself “you can’t have that” or slipping into negative self talk. Affirmations are an awesome tool to use when emotional eating comes up. Give it a shot 😎

Are you a hot chocolate fan?? ☕️ ⠀ ...⠀ I recently found hot chocolate in my back cupboard and I've been all about it. At one point in my life, I would have avoided it citing "too much sugar," or "empty calories". These are also known as food rules (ironically, ones that I picked up in school 🤦‍♀️). ⠀ ...⠀ If you notice that you are avoiding sweetened beverages, for example, ask yourself some questions 👉🏻 Do you like them? If so, do you feel guilty when you have them? Do you over-eat when you do allow yourself to have them? Feeling guilty, and/or out of control about a certain food may be a sign that there are some underlying food rules that can be examined. ⠀ ...⠀ Next stop is compassion, compassion, compassion 💕 It's ok to feel this way. Our culture literally breeds this shit. I'd also invite you to challenge these food rules a bit. Could you have a sweetened bev this week? Take time to really pay attention to how it tastes, how you feel after. Is it satisfying? Be non-judgmental, and stay curious. Food for thought: Have you ever stopped to think about a snowflake? I’m being dead serious. How each snowflake is precisely and distinctively different from the other. There are no replicas. No accidents. No copies. Today, I found myself wondering why God chose to make snowflakes so unique. Snowflakes don’t talk to each other. They don’t invent technology or strive to cure cancer. RANT WARNING... 👩🏻‍🔬👨🏼‍🔬 . . I’ve just been scrolling through the comments on a Facebook post about a scientific study which found that whole grains were beneficial for liver disease. There were naturopaths and nutritionists chiming in on the efficacy of such studies, the accuracy of results, the biases in these studies etc... etc... Painful much? 🙄 . . I’m ALL for an evidence-based and scientific approach to nutrition. But my goodness - how can we not see that this is missing the point of food ENTIRELY?!?!? 🤷🏻‍♀️ . . This is a perfect example of “food as medicine” gone too far. We will NEVER be able to design scientific nutrition studies which accurately and objectively control for every confounding factor that impacts our nutrient and health status. Never. If we (particularly as natural health practitioners) are on this quest, we are wasting our time. . . When is this industry going to realise that eating whole grains is NOT just about liver health? What about taking into account your preference for whole grains? Or your dislike of whole grains? What about how whole grains make you feel? Whether whole grains are good or bad for your liver, DOES IT REALLY MATTER? . . I say no. I say food and eating is MUCH more complex than this. We are reducing the eating experience to something much too simple by taking this approach. . . I don’t care what ANY studies tell me about a particular food. If I don’t like it, I won’t eat it. If it makes me feel ordinary in the guts (aka kale), I won’t eat it. And I KNOW there’s thousands of studies out there damning some of favourite foods, but I’m still going to eat them. Because food is not just a vehicle for lengthening our lives and preventing disease. MONDAY FOOD REQUIREMENTS: Simple, fast, warm, nutritious, and tasty. I’ve been enjoying this bone broth soup 2-3x a week, and it never gets old. 🙌🏼✨ . . BONE BROTH SOUP⤵️ . ✖️ @kettleandfire Bone Broth - Any flavor! . ✖️2-3 stalks organic celery . ✖️2-3 organic carrots . ✖️1/2 package @wholefoods organic frozen cauli rice . ✖️Sometimes I will throw in leftover meat, (baked chicken, steak, etc.) but you get a significant amount of protein from the bone broth! .✖️OPTIONAL: Angel hair rice noodles . Simmer everything together for about 10-15 minutes, depending on how tender you like the veggies. After it’s cooked, I top my bowl with a generous drizzle of olive oil, and a pinch of black pepper. Meze style spicey quinoa bowl 🍚🌶 ... . This meze style bowl is a beautiful alternative to couscous. Its ready in under 25 minutes and tastes amazing!! I loved it so much, it will be a weekly tradition in our household 🏡 ... . * Note, 1 cup quinoa: 1 cup water = enough for 2- 3 bowls... . 1 cup mixed quinoa 1 cup water Himalayan salt 4 spring onions 1 cup cherry tomatoes chopped into quarters Olive oil 2 tsp Cayenne pepper 1 tsp chilli flakes Handful chopped fresh parsley 1 tbsp sesame seeds 4 tbsp tomato purée 1/2 lemon squeeze ... . 1️⃣ In a large pot, bring 1 cup water to the boil on medium/ high heat 2️⃣ Rinse your quinoa until water runs clear and there are no more bubbles, then add the quinoa to the boiling water along with salt. Let simmer for 10 minutes uncovered and stir occasionally 3️⃣ meanwhile, prepare the veg by chopping 4️⃣ After 10 mins of cooking quinoa, remove from heat, and cover with lid and towel until the water has evaporated 5️⃣ Once the water has evaporated, the quinoa should still be a little firm and grainy. Now add the tomato purée and mix well, then add the rest of the veg along with the olive oil, lemon juice, sesame seeds and spices. Mix again. Best served cold

Basically, intuitive eating is listening to your body. You let your internal hunger/fullness cues dictate what, when, and how much to eat. There are 10 principles of intuitive eating, but the first and most important is to reject the diet mentality. It’s not a diet and the goal is not weight loss. You may lose weight as a positive side effect, but the goal is to improve the relationship with food and rediscover the enjoyment in eating. In the diet mentality, a cookie is labeled as “bad”. When we want a cookie, biology in our brains wires us to be preoccupied with that cookie until we have it. In intuitive eating, we eat the cookie and move on! My best intuitive eating advice is this: just eat the damn cookie! In the first few months, play was soaking up time as a family of three. After our daughter was born, play was soft and small… or it was the sounds of our son playing, which seemed so big and rambunctious in comparison. Now play is integrated, the babies are interacting more and more each day and I can see the magic that the two of them playing together will bring. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ For me personally, play has shown up in words and thoughts, playlists and creative ideas. Something inside me has switched on since starting @celebratecultivate. It is a calm, collected, and curated kind of play.
