Not an early bird..⁣ ⁣ #birding_tuesday featuring the Green bee-eater @lenstrails ⁣ Of the many birds, if there is one that is a slow starter in the mornings, it is the Green bee-eater (also known as little green bee-eater). On an early morning, it is common to find them huddled next to one another with their bills tucked in their backs, even well after sunrise. They are generally seen in small groups and sometimes in hundreds.⁣ ⁣ As the name suggests, bee-eaters eat flying insects, especially bees and wasps. They catch them in the air by striking from a perch. They employ a speciality technique before eating a meal - bee-eaters remove the sting by repeatedly hitting and rubbing the insect on a hard surface. This is how they disarm dangerous prey.⁣ ⁣ It is interesting to note, Green bee-eaters are natural-born killer of bees. Even juvenile birds that have never encountered bees in their life, know how to perform this procedure. Amazing genetic memory isn’t it?⁣ ⁣ Thanks to their widespread distribution, I have had several opportunities to observe and photograph them. Here was one such opportunity during a safari drive at Bandipura. ⁣ ⁣ For more such wonders of nature and wildlife and the accompanying stories, visit lenstrails.com

The pin-tailed whydah (Vidua macroura) is a small songbird with a conspicuous pennant-like tail in breeding males. It is a resident breeding bird in most of Africa south of the Sahara Desert. The pin-tailed whydah was first described by the German naturalist Peter Simon Pallas in 1764 and given the binomial name Fringilla macroura The pin-tailed whydah is 12–13 cm in length, although the breeding male's tail adds another 20 cm to this. The adult male has a black back and crown, and a very long black tail. The wings are dark brown with white patches, and the underparts and the head, apart from the crown, are white. The bill is bright red. The female and non-breeding male have streaked brown upperparts, whitish underparts with buff flanks, and a buff and black face pattern. They lack the long tail extension, but retain the red bill. Immature birds are like the female but plainer and with a greyish bill. fun facts: Black-crowned Night Heron nest in groups that often include other species, including herons, egrets, and ibises. A breeding Black-crowned Night-Heron will brood any chick that is placed in its nest. The herons apparently don’t distinguish between their own offspring and nestlings from other parents. Savannah Sparrow - Fireweed is a common wildflower in Alaska. When my family visited Alaska the fireweed was blooming in large fields across the southern part of the state. This sparrow was flying through a large cluster of fireweed flowers when I photographed it.

When I first moved to Thailand, it were the brightly-colored birds which made me fall in love with birding. Such as this Asian Golden Weaver. A pretty common bird, with amazing weaving skills. In this season, you can find many of them building their nests at the rice fields surrounding Bangkok.

One of my favorite local subjects is this fancy diving duck. She’s been sticking around my area for quite some time, presuming she has some sort of injury that’s keeping her here. She’s in a good spot though, a pond system that is well taken care of and one that other ducks and geese call home, too. I caught her on a moodier day, floating along quite lazily in front of me. She’s thankfully still leery of humans, even with being at this park for almost two years now. 🌥 ∥ Canvasback (Aythya valisineria)

For my birthday this past March, my family gave me the prettiest little hummingbird feeder to hang off of my back porch. It wasn’t long until I noticed a little hummingbird fluttering around the feeder. Then, to my absolute surprise & delight, she started building a nest on top of our string of lights! Here she is in the process of adding some fluff & sitting on her first egg. I have lots of photos & video that I will be sharing over the next few weeks, along with some other fun things that I’ve been doing this summer. 💚

Confiado, llamativo por el contraste que generan su pico y plumaje, y transita por sitios visibles: algunas razones por las cuales este zorzal no pasa desapercibido. Nos lo podemos encontrar en bosques, pastizales y quebradas. Zorzal chiguanco / Chiguanco Thrush (Turdus chiguanco)

Scarlet Robin juv. ♀️ Petroica boodang race campbelli Etymology: Petroica boodang (pet-ROY-kuh BOO-dang) "boodang rock-dweller". Petroica 'rock dweller', from the Greek petros meaning 'rock', and oikos, a 'house or dwelling place', reflecting the habitat on Norfolk Island, whence the type specimen originated.  boodang 'boodang', from an Aboriginal word for the species.  Lesson (1837) stated that the natives of the county around 'Sidney' call the bird 'bouddang' (though he spelt it 'booddang' in his French common name). I was not able to ascertain the origin of the race name campbelli, so if you're bird nerd and know its meaning I would love to know.
