Me @ NYC I posted a story a few days ago of a view of the city from a condo in Hudson Yards and captioned it something like "a sneak peek at my future". My view on what real success is hasn't changed, but it has been tinted by materialism, which manifests when I open up Zillow or Apartments.com every other night to obsessively search for real estate in Manhattan and Downtown Brooklyn. Part of it is for the convenience of being no more than 15 minutes away from any action and work, saving me money, time, and headache. But the other part, the smaller part of me that's self-gratifying more than practical, says that I want to look outside a floor-to-ceiling window at the late night action of Tribeca or Hell's Kitchen after a busy day, then collapse on the murphy bed I left open before leaving that morning. It's my space to work and play however I want. And every time I find that studio apartment for $2200/month that catches my eye, I'll have another real and tangible thing to aspire to. The goal right now is to be able to afford to move out. A modern day Millennial/Gen Z dream. 📸: @gr1fn

Who said New York doesn't have any monumental arches? Check this one out.⠀ Right by one of the entrances to Prospect Park, by the Grand Army Plaza Brooklyn library Branch, Brooklyn Museum just a roundabout away from Park Slope, and Downtown Brooklyn. This arch is near one of the most visited places by locals and tourist.⠀ ⠀ Honestly, as a local myself, I truly believe no one gives a hard thought of when the arch was made (and that is 1889-1892) only because we see it so often and truthfully don't have much time to study what this. It's that New York life🤪😂⠀ ⠀ #monuments#monument#grandarmyplaza#brooklyn#downtownbrooklyn#newyork#newyorkcity#ny#nyc#blkyn#parkslope#prospectpark#tourist#tourists#photography#photographer#nyphotographer#nycphotographer#nyphotography#nycphotography#blogger#nyblogger

@whatsyazodiac ?!! ✨ . ♉️ x ♎️ Inspired by the zodiac signs, there are 12 rooms all filled with handmade, local art! It’s a gallery taken to the next level ✨ you can move as you wish through the rooms where you’ll find photo opportunities for sure, but be sure to take your time to admire the artwork featured in each space.. especially in your sign’s room!! (My room ((can you guess my sign)) was filled with real plants!!!) . ♎️ o ♉️ We had the absolute pleasure of meeting Shay (@allnaturalingredient)who walked us through the space and explained each room and the magic behind it 💕 she’s a Sagittarius which has a more intimate room. I died when she said “in this room I’m going to make you get to know me cause that’s how a Sagittarius is” 😂 love! . ♉️ x ♈️ I recommend this popup for those who prefer to support local artist’s hard work and efforts rather than a large company’s production for profit.. You’ll get some content for your feeds, and really feel the love for art put into the rooms. . ♎️ o ♉️ 273 Bleecker st, New York NY and only from August 23-September 1st, 2019

Another beautiful mural by @kobrastreetart as seen from Highline: Brazilian artist Eduardo Kobra pays tribute through his mural painting to two great men of humanity, Mother Teresa of Calcutta and Mahatma Gandhi. The work painted on the face of a building located on 10th Avenue corner with 18th Street, where It houses the Chelsea Square Market within the Chelsea neighborhood in New York City, it can be seen when touring the “High Line”... 📸: @another_part_of_newyork * * * * * #highline #mural #muralsofnyc #streetsofnewyork #streetart #manhattan #nyc #nycgram #newyorkgram #ThisIsNewYorkCity #iloveny #NYCviews #highlinenyc #ig_newyork #ig_nyc #bigapple #streetphotography #nycphotographer #nycphotography #urbanart #graffitiart #streetartistry #kobrastreetart

Penn Station is a circus of traveling freaks. Except these clowns dress in business suits and carry briefcases and commute from Cresskill. Marco* is ruggedly handsome, dressed in his own camouflage clown suit. His fingers grip tight to the heavy M4 on his hip. I don’t know if he’s a real soldier but he looks the part. Marco stands tall and at attention, but he leans on his left leg when he talks to me. “How should I pose?” The pseudo-soldier asks, nervously glancing down at the ground like he’s only just discovered his own two feet. “Any way you’re comfortable.” I encourage him. Marcus plants his boots firmly on the ground and smiles down at me. I think I’ll run away and join the circus. (September, 2017)

Customers approach the glass patisserie display in astonishment, like spectators at a zoo. I watch from the other side, so I guess that makes me the animal. I see Sheryl* eyeing the over-priced cakes. She sees me and scrunches her face tight. “You’re so thin!” She shrieks. “How do you stay in shape with all these sweets around?” I don’t eat $20 cake, Sheryl, just $4 tuna from a can. It’s the only meal I’ll have today. Most days. I may have had scrambled eggs for breakfast but I can’t remember. Scrambled brains. I can burn a whole lot of calories standing on my feet all day. I can burn this whole place to the ground all night. “If I had your job, I’d be in trouble!” Sheryl laughs loudly, her mouth opening big and wide. I make my mouth small and tight, forcing a polite smile. The customer is always right. (February, 2019)

French families huddle together with their wrinkled maps and oversized backpacks. I, an impatient American, stand behind them as they shove spare change into a MetroCard vending machine. Three motherfucking dollars for a motherfucking single ride. Darius* lingers close by, his squinting eyes studying the awkward French foreigners. Darius moves with me, away from the crowd, like a trained dancer. He quietly asks if I can spare a dollar and I tell him I’ll give him a dollar if he would allow me to photograph his shoes. Without hesitation, Darius bends down to adjust a pant leg and angles his right foot towards me. He is proud to show off. I give him a dollar and he says “God bless you.” I walk away before the guilt settles in my stomach. (September, 2017)

Today a man shot himself outside the White House gates, just hours before we showed up. Yellow police tape barricades the scene as firefighters hose off the red mess on the sidewalk. For a home that has nurtured 50 ft. egos for a few hundred years, 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue sure looks a lot smaller than you’d imagine. (March, 2018)

A bad bout of vertigo has plagued me for weeks but the latest CT scan reveals no rhyme or reason. I wish it was a tumor. An Orthodox Jewish doctor performs a manuever on me to stop my dizziness; I roll around slowly and self-consciously on the small examining table, the paper liner crunching under my weight. “Did I cure you?” he asks. No. Sensing my stress, the Orthodox doctor tells me I should meditate to a higher power. “Like this,” he says as he closes his eyes, bows his head and chants quietly. Tears fill my eyes. His strange attentiveness moves me. The Orthodox doctor prescribes Anti-Vert for my dizziness and I tell him thank you, that he’s been very helpful and he says he’s glad. (January, 2017)

Bobby* was sweeping the floor when I entered the break room. I sit down at a table closest to the door so as not to disturb him. He asks me how old I am and I ask him what part of Jamaica he’s from. “I want to take you there” he tells me, his quiet voice vibrating like an old engine that won’t start. I stare at the company policy tacked to the wall. Bobby goes back to sweeping. I don’t mean to be rude. (April, 2017)

Seventh-Day Adventists swarm the subway with their usual scripture. Paul* stood stoically in the peripheral, dressed in his Sunday best on a Tuesday afternoon; The sun shining brightly upon his back, lighting him up like a light beam. He looked like a prophet to me. (September, 2017)
