Great Paula Scher talk @mcrschart a few weeks back! Loved seeing how a sketch on a random piece of paper turns into an iconic piece of design. Last pic were the postcards we had to design to win a seat at the talk. I AM TYPE #type #graphicdesign #paulascher

This monograph by @uniteditions covers Paula Scher’s early days in the music industry as an art director with CBS and Atlantic records; the launch of her first studio, Koppel & Scher; and her 25-year engagement with Pentagram. It also provides an up-to-date look at Paula’s idiosyncratic hand-painted maps, part of her prolific artistic practice that complements her still-growing graphic legacy. ‘Paula Scher: Works’ is also a visual record of contemporary New York’s urban fabric, indelibly transformed by the designer’s innovative approach to environmental graphics and identity design: from MoMA to Charter Schools; from the High Line to Shake Shack. Wrote about #paulascher for @ukesquire. The first female partner @pentagramdesign, the world’s largest independent design consultancy, it is responsible for architecture and interiors, books, branding, films, products, posters, websites and corporate ‘identities’ for everyone from #londontaxis to paracetamol packaging for @bootsuk, @claridgeshotel, @thesavoylondon, @penguinukbooks and @united airways. At 71, Paula has arguably had her most successful year – at least in terms of recognition. In June she was honoured as a fellow by the Society of Experiential Graphic Design. In October she received the @prattinstitute Legends Award, celebrating ‘distinguished individuals whose works have helped shape the cultural landscape.’ In November she headlined #designmanchester. She also fronted the @netflix series Abstract: The Art of Design. Her work's in the permanent collection at London’s @vamuseum and New York's @themuseumofmodernart. If you’ve used @microsoft Windows, eaten at @shakeshack or paid money into @citibank, you've interacted with Paula’s work. But it is in her home of #newyork where she has had greatest impact. She rebranded MoMa, now the most recognisable brand in the museum world. She's also in no small way responsible for @highlinenyc, the elevated rail trail on Manhattan’s West Side that's the city’s most visited attraction. “I love working in New York,” she says. “I use typography to convey spirit. Something silly, something serious, something happy, something stupid. Whatever the point that needs to be made can be made with a word, maybe not even a word, a letter form.” She dislikes the idea design should be clean (art speak for minimal). “When I was young I rebelled against Helvetica, because everybody uses it. They’re still using it now! If everybody is using it, how can it be distinctive?” Still, switching off can be a problem. “I’m always bothered by bad design. I was in a hotel last night and thought ‘Why is the shower curtain like this?’ It’s terrible. In the realm of political nightmares in my country right now, I really shouldn’t care that much about the typeface on a billboard.” “But, you know. It’s my job to notice.” #esquire #design #type

"Paula Scher is a contemporary American artist and graphic designer best known for her posters, logo designs, and album covers. In her paintings, Scher portrays large-scale maps filled with intricate lettering that indicate political and societal connections between countries and regional borders. “The job of the designer is to make things understandable, usable, accessible, enjoyable, and important to a public, that involves the public,” she has explained. Born on October 6, 1948 in Washington, D.C., she went on to study at the Tyler School of Art in Philadelphia before moving to New York, where she worked as a layout artist for Random House. In the years that followed, Scher held positions at both Atlantic Records and CBS Records, during which time she received four Grammy nominations for her album designs. The artist later joined Pentagram, a design consulting firm in New York, where she continues to live and work. Today, Scher’s works are held in the collections of The Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C., and the Philadelphia Museum of Art, among others." - Excerpt from (artnet. com) Visit #paulascher to see more works by this wonderful artist!
