The Witch's Tree. According to legend, under this tree lies the grave of murderer and self-proclaimed witch Zwarte Kaat, or Black Kate. After a failed murder plot at the cusp of the 17th century, Zwarte Kaat and the members of her husband's gang are sentenced to death. They were to be buried without gravestones, but above Zwarte Kaat's burial spot a shrub was planted. As the years passed, the shrub magically bloomed into a magnificent tree, much larger, much stronger, and more twisted than any tree nearby. Locals, scared that Zwarte Kaat really was a witch and granted the tree magical properties, called this the Witch's Tree. In reality, this is a birch tree like the trees nearby, and not a magical shrub. Core samples show that the tree actually began life in 1890, but the allure of the unusual tree in a clearing has cemented its place in local folklore. You can visit this magnificent tree just outside of Bladel, Netherlands, where it dons a vibrant canopy of leaves and is a peaceful resting spot or place for meditation. Yesterday, December 11, was International Mountains Day! #MountainsMatter . Mountains are vital for our lives, almost one billion people live in mountain areas, and over half the human population depends on mountains for water, food and clean energy. However, mountain ecosystems are highly susceptible to climate change Take a moment to learn more at http://www.un.org/en/events/mountainday/ . For #internationalmountainday I thought I'd bring out one of my old favorites. Got up real early one summer morning in college to climb up Church mountain and catch first light on Mt. Baker. It was real cold, even darker, and my hiking buddy couldn't be roused. I was totally exhausted because I was worried I would miss the sunrise at about 5 am so I was essentially powerwalking. Couldn't have been more worth it and I can't wait to get up there for another sunrise. #mountains #mountbaker #sunrise #therealmtbaker #hiking #hikingadventures #allaboutadventures #getoutandhike #washingtonexplored #washington #explorewashington #mtbakersnoqualmienationalforest #optoutside #placesworthprotecting at Mount Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest

Was dying to catch some snow at Yosemite but there wasn't much left in the valley, it was all at higher elevations. Well, this time geotagging is important ! This used to be protected land. But, as I recently was dismayed to discoer, ( thanks to an article by @argonautphoto on @natgeo ), exctly a year ago POTUS Trump has shrinked the size of GSENM by a half and this gem is now excluded from the monument. This rock, which for millions of years defy the laws of physics, may fall victom to politics. The same apply to yesterday photo of near by hoodoos . For nearly 4 months this summer I called this vehicle home. It was incredibly liberating and I experienced so many places that I had only once seen in my dreams. But even after all that time, I realized that I’m still happiest right here. Pursuing a passion is fun, no day is the same and living in the present becomes the norm. Jackson Hole has opened so many doors for me and I’m incredibly thankful for this welcoming community. It’s official—our winter 2018/2019 is out! Pick up your FREE copy around town or visit our website to browse the e-edition (Link in Profile)! This issue of JHStyle focuses on the theme of giving back, celebrating the many selfless and philanthropic residents and organizations that help make our community so wonderful. ABOUT THE COVER: With a theme-based, mountain resort lifestyle magazine, deciding on a front cover is always a fun, yet challenging, venture. Many times our photographers capture the essence and feel of our theme during an assigned photo shoot. Other times, we set out on a mission to capture the perfect shot. But occasionally, we get the privilege to suggest a slightly different approach, such as this issue’s cover. This historic photo (circa 1938) depicts Bob Kranenberg on skis looking toward Cascade Canyon. The image was submitted by the Jackson Hole Ski & Snowboard Club (courtesy of the Jackson Hole Historical Society), and it captures the essence of Jackson Hole—a community that embraces the active, outdoor lifestyle. Local residents give countless hours of their time, as well as monetary donations, in order to help protect special places for future generations to enjoy. This issue celebrates their giving nature. at Jackson, Wyoming

The night my camera froze. Grand Tetons National Park, September 2018. Is there a better way to start the day than by watching the sunrise? Trivia: We spent the night on a parking lot in Wyoming which is illegal apparently but we didn’t know at that time. Luckily no cops showed up and we had a more or less calm night. It was freezing cold though and our motorhome got pretty chilly. In the early morning before sunrise we could watch the parking lot fill up again with photographers and folks who just wanted to watch the sunrise. I left my camera outside during the night, to capture the stars, however, it froze around midnight. Since I went outside long before sunrise I realized what had happened, took my gear inside our motorhome and cranked up the heating. The camera thawed just in time, functioning normal again and allowed me to capture the sunrise. Thanks @evaratzi for sticking around with me. Thank you for being on my side on those crazy adventures.
