Plate-on-Bar Bodysaws for Your Abs. This is a "bodysaw" type of ab exercise exercise done with a plate on top of a barbell - essentially a dynamic plank. . It's a great way to increase the challenge of the plank. . Because not only are you shifting your support forwards and backwards, which changes where the tension goes into your abs, you're also having to balance and stabilize the plate on top of the bar itself the whole time as you shift. . I'm doing this one with a bumper plate (which has some grip on it with the rubberized coating). I haven't tried it with a smooth steel plate, so not sure how well that would work. . What you COULD do, however, is put a gym towel (or something rubberized) underneath the plate and just hold it in position, in order to give some grippiness to the plate, if it doesn't roll well. . I started out with a slower movement, focusing on tension, then shifted to a faster forward-and-back movement. Both were very effective. .
