Bees have 5 eyes! That’s right! The 3 ocelli on the top of their head are simple eyes that separate light intensity. The 2 large compound eyes on the side of their head contains 6,900 facets which each act like an individual eye and point in slightly different directions, offering a wide angle of sight. Honeybees can see shapes, colours and ultraviolet (UV) light (which humans typically can’t see). Special pigments in flowers absorb or reflect UV light, identifying a “landing strip” that guides the bee to a plant’s store of nectar and pollen. BUT honeybees can’t see the colour red! . . . #beeeyes #compoundeyes #ocelli #youlearnsomethingneweveryday #bees #honeybee #apismellifera #honeybeeclassroom #beeschool #kidsandbees #pollinators #beeeducation #fortheloveofbees photo credit @gluck.a at Honeybee Centre

Let’s talk about small carpenter bees (Ceratina spp.)! These lovely metallic gems are close relatives of the larger carpenter bees of more commonly found in Southern US states (Xylocopa spp.). The smaller relatives tend to occupy pre-drilled holes or utilize hollow stems for their nest sites. The vast majority are solitary but there are a couple species that form nesting aggregations and work somewhat cooperatively. These bees are also more widely distributed especially in the Northern states. Keep your eyes peeled for these fascinating little pollinators!

#didyouknow nearly one out of every four bee species known in the U.S. can be found in Utah? 🐝🐝🐝 And 660 species have been found to live in the Grand Staircase-Escalante Monument alone. But this incredible and thriving bee diversity faces the threat of habitat loss, due to the recent rollback of federal land protection which cut the monument's size nearly in half. 😔 Learn more about @usuaggielife study's findings via the @earthdotcom article linked in our bio. It's saddening to think of the uncertain future for the 80+ species who now live on unprotected land — but let's turn it into further motivation to keep speaking up on behalf of bee populations everywhere. 📢 #Repost @earthdotcom (@get_repost) ・・・ Utah’s Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument is a hot spot for bee diversity, but the Trump administration’s push for fewer land protections could put the thriving bee populations in the region at risk, according to a new study. New Year, New You? Become a beekeeper! 🐝 We’ve all heard about the startling decline in the bee population, due to factors like habitat loss, pesticides, disease and climate change. Cities have been flagged as excellent sanctuary sites for bees because of parks and urban gardens and their rich offerings in varied native and non-native plant life. How to start? Become a beekeeper, or hire one to keep them for you! The Boston Area Beekeepers Association is offering Bee School beginning in February for those that want to try beekeeping. http://www.bostonbeekeepers.org For those too busy to maintain a hive, Best Bee’s Boston will bring and maintain a hive in your garden, courtyard or roof deck. https://bestbees.com If you know of other resources feel free to comment below! Introducing you to these magical beings that have graced us with their presence on the land. This is Dona Estrela, her second coming ❤️. I’ve learnt that for me bee stings are medicine and have the possibility of providing visions. That when I sit by the hive they heal me as they dance around me, energetically clearing me and the space. The different elements of the hive are alchemical potions whether from the honey, to the wax, to the propolis, with the possibility to heal and teach us. The bees are masters within nature and shapeshifters. Playing numerous roles, pollination just one. And I know I am only at the very beginning of learning about them. They are teaching me to be more in my own truth. It is no wonder they are found everywhere in ancient traditions. #honeybee #bee #pollinators #alchemy #magic #topbar #hivepainting #art #beekeeping #naturalbeekeeping at Portugal

There are a lot of great things you can plant for pollinators but the Japanese Apricot is my absolute favorite. Not only does it provide a much needed midwinter source of food and pollen, but also brings a little color to an otherwise drab time of year. It just started blooming a few days ago and already you can literally hear it buzzing from 20 feet away. #hillsboroughhoney #honeybee #pollinators #ncbeekeeping #apiary #hillsboroughnc

i found a phone i thought was lost and recovered a summer's worth of tenderly documented plant investigations in which i barely left the 30 square km around my home, explored every green spot on the map within biking and busing distance, canoed around my neighborhood planting elder cuttings/counting elder shrubs/tasting elderberries and generally experienced wonder and joy like it was my 9-5 ☀️ . loving the land as an urban, property-less person in the anthropocene means loving edge places and in-between places (where, as plant ppl know, good medicine grows). it necessitates a particular orientation to place and different sorts of maps. it is deeply rewarding but also bittersweet. this feels especially true where i live. i can portage to the water from my house and paddle around with water lillies and mink on a river that is polluted from both the industrial meat packing facility upstream and the factory which emits hexavalent chromium over the legal limit downstream. the green spots on the map are shrinking. some of the places i visited this summer will be paved over in the next 2-10 years to build housing most of the people i know can't afford. i wonder what potential there may be in documentation, in witnessing, in knowing when and where a flower bloomed. if a patch of wild leeks gets paved over for commuter condos, does it matter that i loved them? (to the leeks i mean, not to me or instagram) from left, blue vervain on the eramosa // beloved late afternoon yarrow in the wildflower meadows behind walmart // pea blossoms in a suburban culvert // suburban cleavers & oxeye daisies // wild scullcap wayyy upriver (the snip is not from me; likely a deer!) // riverbank evening primrose. i feel like i can taste sunlight & humidity when i look at these pictures #urbangeography #urbanbotany #urbanecology #anthropocene #climategrief #droughtresistant  #eveningprimrose #yarrow #bluevervain #scullcap #peablossom #oxeyedaisy #wildflowers #plantsofinstagram #pollinators #ontariowildflowers #cancerseason #leoseason #plantsofinstagram #flowersofinstagram at Eramosa River

The #monarchs have flown to Mexico, but we’ll lure them back with milkweed! #Butterflies enjoy nectar from lots of different blooms, but this one is drinking from an annual #Asclepias. Good choice! The Asclepias species are larval food for monarchs, which means our flighty friends need them to reproduce. Oh the list of superlatives I could spout about this plant could never do it justice! Further evidence of the indestructible beauty of the Ceanothus: when we planted these Ceanothus maritimus ‘Valley Violet’ years ago, they were yellowed out in their pots and looking very unhappy. Now they are thriving in our bank along highway 92, despite having zero supplemental water, and constant exposure to sun, wind, and exhaust fumes. The Importance of Bees: Pollination The most important thing that bees do is pollinate. Pollination is needed for plants to reproduce, and so many plants depend on bees or other insects as pollinators. When a bee collects nectar and pollen from the flower of a plant, some pollen from the stamens—the male reproductive organ of the flower—sticks to the hairs of her body. When she visits the next flower, some of this pollen is rubbed off onto the stigma, or tip of the pistil—the female reproductive organ of the flower. When this happens, fertilization is possible, and a fruit, carrying seeds, can develop. #bees #bee #nature #honey #savethebees #wildlifephotography #flowers #beekeeping #meghalaya #naturephotography #honeybee #shillong #videograms #instagram_kids #beekeeper #beesofinstagram #honeybees #apiary #beekeepers #flower #instavideo #beautiful #macrophotography #garden #insect #pollen #bumblebee #picoftheday #pollinators #bhfyp at Meghalaya

Environmental news items of the week: . . . LA will host the first ever Vegan Fashion Week in February 2019, mere days before New York Fashion Week. Created by animal rights activist Emmanuelle Rienda (@veganfashionstylist ) the event will comprise of catwalk shows of eco-friendly designers, talks and an exhibition on the evolution of vegan fashion. 👗👚🥾👓 . . . A research study has found that allotments and both weedy and well-pruned gardens are all urban sanctuaries for pollinators, including bees. Towns and cities are being suggested as safe-havens for bees to tackle the growing concern over their widespread decline due to loss of wild areas and pesticide use. Dandelions, considered as weeds to many, were one of the flowers found to be a favourite with pollinators.🌸🌼🐝 . . . Scientists say it may still technically be possible to limit warming to 1.5C if drastic action is taken now. This would include an immediate phase out of fossil fuel infrastructure such as power plants, factories, vehicles, ships and planes and replacing them with zero-carbon alternatives. Researchers estimated that this would give us a 64% chance of staying under 1.5C. Do you think the world’s leaders are up for the challenge? Let us know in the comments.👇 . . . The key to measuring global warming is to measure our oceans, as oceans absorb >90% of the heat that results from greenhouse gases. A study has reported that the last five years were the hottest five on record. It is reported that the current rat of ocean warming is equivalent to five Hiroshima-size atomic bombs exploding every second. This heating will have catastrophic consequences because as oceans heat up they expand, leading to sea level rise. Warmer oceans also lead to stronger and more damaging storms.🌪🌊 @veganfashionweek @VFW #veganfashionweek #pollinators #bees #climatechange #wildflowers #fossilfuels #globalwarming #oceans #oceanwarming #environmentalnews
