|| MY PRACTICE || Right now my practice is short. Maybe 10 min (my big boy is sick and slept in so I had a bit of time in the morning. Little one next to me on the mat). Some days only 4 mins. Some postnatal pelvic exercises but mainly mobilization... my body is so stiff ... and still recovering. _____________ But that is ok. That’s what I need right now. This active child position felt so good. And laying there so closed to the floor... smelling my mat .... YES! I missed it! We LOVE babies! Teaching yoga with babies in class is a one-of-a-kind experience and you may never want to teach a regular yoga class again! Babies love to watch their parents move. They follow our arms and smile at us and one another. It’s a beautiful experience for them to see their parents engaging in such a healthy activity. One may think that babies will not remember their yoga experiences but we disagree and believe that parents attending prenatal yoga and baby and me yoga are planting little seeds for their babies to grow and understand the importance of physical and spiritual self-care. Since I began studying Postnatal Fitness, and experienced my own recovery after birthing my daughter, I realize just how important it is to make time for your SELF and restore the body, mind and spirit after such a life-changing event. It’s challenging to find the right exercise, with the lack of knowledge among the fitness industry on exactly what helps rebuild the core, and what causes more trauma-potentially leading to dysfunction. So, I have developed a 4-week series that integrates the two practices that were key in helping me restore my core function, strengthen my body and pelvic floor and calm my mind during the transition to motherhood. As a Bellies Inc. Core Confidence Trainer, I am certified to teach their program designed specifically for postpartum women by Pelvic Floor Physiotherapists and Postnatal Fitness Specialists. I have integrated this program into a Vinyasa Yoga practice, which places emphasis on linking breath with movement and mindfulness. We’ll also explore the concept of Lunaception, (aligning with the lunar phases) to help return to a natural, cyclical rhythm between the mind and body. *TUESDAY TIP* 5️⃣ Positions with the Birth Ball Among the many pain management tools one can use for labor, the birth ball is definitely a must have! The ball is extremely versatile, inexpensive and effective! Parent-To-Be: Most women instinctively start to sway or rock when seated or leaning against the ball. This movement helps create a natural rhythm which encourages open, easier breathing. Movement also encourages pelvic mobility which can help move the baby into an optimal birthing position. Also, in many of the positions assumed with the use of the birth ball, the spine and pelvis are in a favorable position to help properly align the baby into a good birthing position and relieve maternal back pressure. Here are some positions to try! 1️⃣ Leaning over on all-fours 2️⃣ Sitting or rocking on the ball 3️⃣ Placed on a bed or table and leaning against it 4️⃣ Support when squatting 5️⃣ Baddha konasana while leaning forward on the ball Be sure to bring it to the hospital, too! --- New Parent: When your baby is being fussy, gently bounce on the ball. 🌸 M A M A H O O D 🌸 . When my own mama came over to meet my firstborn, I think my first words were, “I didn’t know I could even feel like this.” And within those feelings, there was so much love and gratitude- but there was so much more than that... . . Physically, parts of my body that I never even knew existed before were swollen and sore. My breasts felt hot and full yet somehow all of that milk was not making its way into my baby, despite the fact he seemed to be latched onto them at ALL times. I’d stumbled blindly into birth in these PY (Pre-Yoga) days and just didn’t have all of that wonderful knowledge about the process of birth and how to help it to unfold calmly. I was afraid; this fear invoked tension which in turn led to a difficult, assisted delivery. (I see this experience as a gift as it truly lit a fire under my belly to follow this path to empower other women with birthing knowledge, as the more I learned about birthing, the more I understood that it needn’t have been that way.) . . Emotionally, the flip side of all of that L O V E was that I also felt a sense of panic that this tiny bundle was mine to nurture but how would I know if I as doing it right? He seemed so small and vulnerable and the world suddenly seemed so enormous and terrifying. My Mum seemed to pick up on all of this from my simple sentence. “I know,” she replied, “It’s not easy.” She held and soothed baby while I enjoyed a well deserved and much needed shower; the first one since I’d given birth. I remember so vividly sobbing as the water washed over me - tears of relief, joy, disbelief. It was beautiful. I came downstairs to a cup of tea and a basket of vibrantly coloured fruit from my mother. I savoured both the taste and the love and support that these simple offerings symbolised. . . And so the days passed and I grew into being a mummy for the first time. Some days were long and filled with endless cluster feeds and nappy changes, some days danced by filled with magic as my babe and I explored the world together. I slowly found peace with my new body; it’s soft belly, it’s wider hips adorned with stretch marks. I found Yoga (continued in comments...)

Now I must admit my child does find eating boring and will come up with any excuse to get out of it. As we sat down to dinner my 2 year old actually said this. At first I though he was telling me he needed yogurt - I’m pretty sure I have never said this, but it got me thinking because I often think i need yoga. Anyone who has spoken to me about my yoga journey and why I love teaching it will know I believe everyone needs yoga. Yoga is for everyone, if your 2 or 82 you can benefit. We all know the benefits of exercise on paper, some may even stick to a regular exercise routine and that’s great. But if you have had to prioritise other things recently try find a reason to move, better still get back to class and let your body and mind reap the benefits. I often hear that people have tried yoga and not enjoyed it for one reason or another, I assure you it’s just that you haven’t found the right class for you yet!! My little people are keeping me busy but I’m looking forward to getting back to teaching in October, my mind is starting to swim with ideas. #postnatalyoga #postnatalfitness #yogahuddersfield #yogamum #familyyoga #yogateacher

Strong pelvic-floor muscles are an integral part of the body’s internal core stabilisers. Maintaining and enhancing their strength postnatally will help the mothers’ recovery and reduce lower back and hip pain and possible issues with continence. . . We are all familiar with the concept of the pelvic floor, but what exactly is it? . . Well, embedded in the pelvic floor muscles are two rings of muscle tissue - known as the anal sphincter and the vaginal sphincter. Between these two muscles sits the strong, dense connective tissue of the perineum. These muscles run from the pubic bone to the coccyx and are called the pubococcygeals. On the sides, these muscles connect to the bottom bones of the pelvis, the ischium. The second, deeper layer, of muscle tissues attached to the pelvic inlet and acts as a support system to the body’s internal organs including the womb, bladder and bowel. . . Post birth, the mother may feel bruised with small grazes and slight tears to the cervix and perineum but these should heal quickly. An episiotomy or more severe tear (third-degree or fourth-degree tear) will take longer to heal and stitches may be painful for a few days or weeks. . . Trauma to the pelvic floor is more common than you think (and please note that any trauma to the perineum must be healed before a mum even thinks about attending a yoga  class, unless the class is specifically for postnatal women). . . Fun fact!: There is considerable variation in the rates of episiotomy from country to country. According to the RCOG published in 2007, 14% of births in the UK, 50% of births in the USA and 99% of births in Eastern Europe resulted in episiotomies. . . My mental health is boosted every time I connect in with myself. The flows are easing my anxiety (& hyper activity) I’m so much calmer and when I do feel overwhelmed I get straight into my mat. Our children really are our spiritual partners in life. Each one of our children teach us valuable lessons that transform us, heal us and expand us in ways more profound then most of us realise. Xavier-Wolf teaches me to be patient, to let go of expectations I create for my children, to choose nurturing over discipline and rules, to witness and observe him so I learn a new perspective, a new way to view the world. He teaches me to open to new ways of doing things, to be adaptive to life and less rigid. He teaches me to slow down, to get off my phone, to be guided by him as he shows me his world. He teaches me to soften, to be more sensitive and to be less reactive. Xavier teaches me to get out of the house and into nature, that his life is on his terms, that he knows what he needs and likes if I pay attention. He teaches me to expand my way of living, thinking, behaving, understanding, loving and believing. He teaches me that not all love is expressed in constant affection, that we really do all have our own love language. Xavier teaches me that he is just fine, he is smarter than he expresses, he understands more than we realise at times, that he values space, he will ask for comfort and help when he needs it. He teaches me that he isn't interested in the superficial life we live in this society, that he cannot be conformed or moulded into societies standards, that he will break the rules, that mess is his creativity and that energy of others doesn't lie. But what Xavier teaches me the most is that, our children aren't here to live up to our expectations, or preconceived beliefs and conditions that we project out on to them. They're not here to tick off a checklist of your requirements and your standards for them to be perfect, loved and accepted. What a blessing it is to raise such an incredible little human. Thank you Xavier-Wolf for being another phenomenal teacher in this life and leading the way for me to grow, expand and love deeper. Happy Birthday Xavy 🎁🎉🧁

Today I rolled out my mat for the first time in 8 weeks. It felt weird, new, comforting and uncomfortable all at the same time. But it felt oh so good to take a few minutes, feel the ground below me.and.just breathe. Self practice ✨⁠ .⁠ After a whirlwind of a year, a quick trip up to warmer climates for a much needed holiday and all of the unpacking that comes with it when you return... I'm finally starting to sink back into the space of committing to self practice, and particularly into what I call the 'birthing zone'. ⁠ .⁠ This last month of pregnancy feels like a very special time for me, so I wanted to take the chance to share some of the practices I'm committing to placing my body and mind in the best possible place for my re-birth into the next phase of motherhood.⁠ .⁠ 🌸 Movement - I know it's often the last thing you feel like doing but a pregnant body needs to move. Prenatal yoga, pilates and walking have been my go-to's for both pregnancies and have gone a long way to keeping me feeling well all the way to the end. I'm excited to have a bit more time for my own practice over the coming month.⁠ 🌸 Bodywork - pregnancy is a huge physical demand. It's rather incredible what our body is capable of but remedial massage and osteopathy are helping keep aches and pains at bay.⁠ 🌸 Relaxation and mindset practice - for me it's hypnobirthing that does the trick. Self hypnosis is the shortcut to the subconscious mind and I find the fastest and most effective way to sink into a state of deep trust, releasing fears and harnessing the power of my mind to enter an altered hormonal state. ⁠ 🌸 Naps - sleep is up the creek by now, so I'm prioritising naps where I can. Even if it means shutting my eyes on the couch while E has some playschool time. Shame you can't bank sleep!⁠ 🌸 Acupuncture - I'm a big fan of acupuncture for preparing the body and nervous system for birth.⁠ 🌸 Women's health physio - checking in with old mate pelvic floor pre-birth to make sure she has her game face on! We ready for ya baby!⁠ 🌸 Emotional release - checking in with my counsellor when I need to and making time for journalling.⁠ .⁠ In the absence of better community care, self care is what I have to work with. To some people this might seem like a lot. To me this is where my values lie, investing in myself, my birth and my body. Unapologetically.

|H o m e P r a c t i c e| Motherhood has changed me and my perspective for life. It changed my body. My yoga practice. My priorities. My whole life really. How do I make time for a yoga practice when I can’t even find time to take a shower? In the first year of being a mom, I rarely made it to a yoga class and even if I did, I felt tremendous guilt for leaving my girl behind for some “me time”. But then again, in a time of transition, we long for a routine that makes us feel secure and brings us in touch with our self. Who am I now? We need time to reflect on our new stage & role in life to recenter and connect with our current thoughts and emotions. My home practice has given me that routine that I needed in order to feel stable & calm enough to embrace my new role as a mom. Some days, I rolled out my mat and I simply set down for some much-needed breaths and on other days, I felt strong enough to deepen my practice and engage in a sequence of poses. I learned to truly listen to my (new) body and move at my own pace. Everything has changed and yet, I’m more me than I’ve ever been” (Iain Thomas)✨

We had such a magical time on the mindful family retreat 💖 I had time to myself to attend fabulous yoga classes, meditate, rest, reflect and spend time with other parents with similar values and struggles. All this while my little ones explored the enchanted forest, took part in art activities, created chaos with new friends, practiced yoga and even canoeing! I took hardly any photos!!! But the smile on her face in this one sums up our week away. C O U R A G E T O C H A N G E And there are some big changes happening! It's with a heavy heart that I announce that @bright.and.well.studio will be closing its doors in the coming weeks. I feel like the studio is an extension of myself so I do feel sad, BUT it is the right thing to do for the future of Bright + Well Yoga and my classes going forward. I will have more energy and time to plough into building classes and community, and that is ultimately where my passion lies. Thank you so so much to everyone who has been to the studio and for all the lovely feedback about the space and the classes. It's been a lovely adventure. Who knows what the future holds but I'm excited to find out. - Shoulder stretches - Do you sit a lot? Carry a baby all day? Spend a lot of time hunched over a computer? Or do you do a lot of forward moving activities like swimming, cycling or driving? This can lead to tight and sore shoulders. Also do we tend to store a lot of tension in the shoulders. Shoulder opening poses and stretches can help you release that tension. . One of my favorite shoulder stretches I got to know during my Yin Yoga teacher training -> the Rolling Panda 🐼 Slide to see from what pose I got there. This pose stretches an area on the back of my shoulder that I get with no other pose I know. Stay here as long as you like and breathe into the shoulder area. . HOW TO BE A YOGI AND A MUM If you had a strong yoga practise before becoming a mum you’ve probably realised by now that you can’t practise like you used to. But that doesn’t mean no yoga at all. Here are my top 5 tips to adapt your yoga routine to fit in with #mumlife 1. LOWER YOUR EXPECTATIONS in case anyone hasn’t told you, when you become a parent life changes... a lot! So don’t expect to be able to saunter off to a yoga class when you feel like it or spend 90-minutes on your mat and go for a leisurely brunch afterwards 😂 those days are gone my friend but hopefully they have been replaced with the love and light that your little one brings to your life 💜 2. DON’T FEEL GUILTY I usually practise when my boy is napping. There are many other things I could be doing- working, preparing lunch, cleaning etc. But I know that if I do yoga everyone benefits not just me. I’m calmer, my mind is clearer and I’m a much more patient mother so definitively don’t feel guilty for prioritising your practise. 3. INVOLVE THEM Make it a game! Babies love to see their parents doing funny things and what could be funnier than watching mum miaow like a cat and roar like a lion. They get to see you exercising too which plants the right seeds for being active when they’re older. 4. PARENT LIKE A YOGI When you can’t get on the mat practise the other side of yoga (arguably the most important stuff) Remember the Yamas and Niyamas? (we’ll be covering these again in autumn classes if you’ve forgotten) but think about Ahimsa/non-violence- non aggressive parenting or Santosha/contentment- how can you bring that into your day? 5. DO WHAT YOU CAN Don’t think that just because you can’t practise for 90-minutes a day you’re not a yogi. As little as 5-minutes on the mat is enough as long as you can truly devote those 5-minutes to you and your yoga. Do you have any tips on how to keep up with your yoga when you’re a new parent? If you’re a mum-to-be now really is the time to make the most of. You have such a wonderful and exciting love-filled journey ahead of you but at the same time you are saying goodbye to this chapter of your life. Enjoy this time where you can just please yourself.

Pranayama is an invaluable practice that becomes even more important during pregnancy. Connecting with the breath and making that mind-body connection can create tranquility and relaxation, calm the nervous system, improve overall stability and help eliminate anxiety and fears for first-time mamas. Keeping the breath steady and focused improves lung capacity minimizing stress and fatigue during labor. There are numerous pranayama practices that are safe and effective during pregnancy, but it is important to avoid techniques that require breath retention or rapid inhalations and exhalations. This creates excessive intra-abdominal pressure within the abdomen and pelvic floor. Pop up mum (and daddy) and baby yoga in the park. Decided to run a little impromptu class with some NCT pals in Ravenscourt Park. Even when it rained we got out the shower curtains and umbrellas to keep the little ones dry and powered on! Such a great way to catch up with friends, look forward to a yummy hot chocolate afterwards and get moving! We all felt amazing for having done some postnatal yoga focussing in shoulders. Back and starting to remain some core strength in a very gradual and safe way. . . . I’ve decided to keep this good thing going and will be doing another pop up mum, dad and baby yoga in Chiswick common (by Turnham Green station) this Wednesday at 11am please message me if you want to join. It’s £5 and everyone with a little munchkin is welcome. If there’s enough interest we could also run one in Ravenscourt Park or Acton park too! Coffee, cake and chats after is essential. Fierce Angle Pose or Goddess Pose (and why you likely NEED to practice this pose): ✔️opens + stretches — the quads, hamstrings, adductors, groin, chest, hips, knees, ankles, and shoulders...talk about a catch-all (well, pretty darn close). ✔️ builds strength and stability within the lower body and a strong foundation for the hips and spine. ✔️for my mamas to be: stimulates the pelvis, helping women in improving fertility and also prepare for childbirth. ✔️ provides stress relief!!! Most of the body’s stress gets accumulated at the hips. Take some LONG, deep holds in this pose before times feel tough to stay calmer! Have you read "The Postnatal Depletion Cure: The Complete Guide to Rebuilding Your Health & Reclaiming Your Energy" by @droscarserrallach?⁠ ⁠ This book changed my life. For the first 2 years of mamahood, I thought it was normal to feel exhausted. I thought it was normal that I used to go back to bed to do a yoga nidra shortly after being awoken by my son. I thought it was normal to need coffee and sweet treats for a 3pm pick me up. 🥥🦀Developing an attitude of gratitude for your body is a powerful gamechanger🦀🥥 . . . It was back in 2017 when we visited this magical island for the first time. Koh Pha-Ngan 🇹🇭 We fell in love with this place and imagined that would be a perfect spot to spend the vacation with a baby if we ever have one. And here we are, two years later with our 7.5 months old 👶🏼! When my boy gets up early I immediately use the opportunity and walk up the hill to the #treehouse where there is a “hidden” #yogashala of @omsunnyyoga 😎 8am is my time on #myyogamat !
