She looked at me intently and squeezed a wet mixture of herbs and roots with her bare hands. A thick goo seeped though her fingers, which was then mixed with murky water and presented in a coconut shell. “Drink.” It was bright yellow, sandy and bitter as hell. I wanted to know what this jamu, or Indonesian traditional medicine, was for. “Diabetes,” she shrugged, as if this had been obvious from the start. “Also, like viagra”. Wait. Did she just call me old and fat? at Kotagede

Late Afternoon Contemplation. Far North Queensland. This is a panoramic photograph of a tropical rainforest creek near where I live... I refuse to hashtag to Tourism Australia as they will automatically take your image's copyright from you but leave you with any possible legal issues. It's in the fine print - link below. They also have sharing agreements with all other tourism organisations. I guess its OK if they pay you. Shitty if they don't. And they have money. Big government grants. https://www.australia.com/en/terms-and-conditions.html (read #6.) #awesomepix #fantastic_earth #beautifuldestinations #wonderful_places #photography #photooftheday #tourtheplanet #awesome.earth #nakedplanet #ig_masterpiece #natgeolandscape #specialshots #amazingphotohunter #IG_Exquisite #earthofficial #princelyshotz #discoverearth #awesomeearth #epic_captures #master_gallery #igworld_global #globeshotz #depthsofearth #igrefined

Guide celebration time. This is Little Wayan. He introduces his guests to Balinese artists: dancers, painters, sculptors, you name it. He’ll ask you what your interests are and then he’ll find the right people. They won’t do a tourist performance for you: the idea is that you actually meet them at home and sit down to have a conversation, drink a cup of coffee with them, see their work in progress. Some of these artists are emerging, others are internationally renowned. Some are old, some are young. They often live in gorgeous traditional family compounds far away from the tourist circuits, so you’ll get a sense of Balinese family dynamics too. Little Wayan—there are too many Wayans out there, so he prefers the full nickname—hopes that this way, traditional Balinese arts aren’t forgotten, artists will gain a renewed sense of pride and visitors get a better idea what Balinese society is all about. He is kind, smart, and unhurried. He also does bike tours off the beaten track, and arranges home cooked meals. He even took us to a little coffee bar his friends had set up in a beautiful rice paddy. I have his Whatsapp number; if you’re interested send me a message and I’ll be happy to share it with you. at Bali, Indonesia

In the year 2038, a tourist guide standing next to a pile of rubble tells a group of visitors: “Borobudur was magnificent. It was the largest Buddhist temple in the world and symbolized the path to enlightenment in thousands of delicate reliefs. It was built in the 9th century, abandoned in the 14th century and painstakingly restored in the 20th century, only to be destroyed in the early decades of the 21st by what we now know as the Selfie Tourist Invasions.” #byebyeunesco at Candi Borobudur Magelang Jateng

Caged songbirds are considered (men’s) status symbols in Indonesia. I’ve found their suffering hard to reconcile with the impressive kindness of the Balinese. Tell me that this is Eurocentric, tell me I’m no vegan either so I shouldn’t talk—but also perhaps consider that sometimes we need outsiders to point out our blind spots, especially when it comes to habits embedded in tradition. at Bali, Indonesia

Just when I thought Bali was completely consumed by mass tourism, @lvbali took me off the beaten track on a bamboo (!!) bike though sleepy villages, bright green rice paddies, and finished with a home-cooked lunch on the grounds of a forgotten palace. 👌 at Bali, Indonesia

When you organize Balinese cooking classes and charge 55 euros a head, you can afford a gold-plated temple to thank the gods. at Bali, Indonesia

4
@jurrpix

Not a fan of cooking classes. They’re usually tourist traps and in Asia that means you get to make your own version of bland, dumbed down tourist food. The people that ran this school were nice though. Clearly they were making a fortune with a top ranking on TripAdvisor, charging 55 euros a head (with a capacity of about 30 people a night). On the family compound, their new temple full of gold plated ornaments was almost finished. at Bali, Indonesia

Many facepalm moments here. American tourists seemed to think they were in Disneyworld and instructed their children to pose next to wild monkeys that could scratch their eyes out at any moment. The rangers were running around pointing out this was a bad idea, but were often misunderstood because the Balinese are so damn nice about everything. at Sacred Monkey Forest Sanctuary Ubud

‘Straya’ Taken on Easter Monday on my way back from South Australia. This is somewhere between Renmark and Mildura. This rainbow kept appearing and then disappearing in my rear view mirror. I pulled over twice and out he drone in the air but the rainbow was gone again. On the third attempt I managed to capture it. Just out of scene were a mob of emus running around too. #djiglobal #aerial #phantom4 #dronestagram

This pretty much sums up my visit to Borobudur, the world's largest Buddhist temple, an arduous, seven-level climb to nirvana, which, rather ironically, turned out to be swarming with people focused on the self. And me. Which I liked. Cheese! at Borobudur, Jawa Tengah, Indonesia

At the Dutch-colonial Batavia City Square in Jakarta, Indonesians like to dress up like the glamorous European oppressors of yore. This, my guide explained, involves renting a bike (pink for girls, blue for boys, and white for couples) and ride it in circles around the square, wearing plastic pith helmets and floppy hats. at Jakarta History Museum

When Indonesia proclaimed its independence from the Netherlands in 1945, it dropped the Dutch tradition of ‘koekhappen’ (bite-the-cake) and replaced it with ‘kroepoekhappen’ (bite-the-prawn-cracker). Actually I made that up. But competitively biting prawn crackers on a string is a thing in Jakarta. A glorious thing. at Kawasan Kota Tua - Jakarta Kota

So this is where all the racket came from at 4 am. Second largest mosque in the world, right next to my hotel. It’s pretty special, made from Italian marble and aluminum from Sulawesi—all very modernist. They made me wear a polyester jubah.
