Here is my failed attempt at a top set up to 6 reps on machine press. Sessions midweek are often my weakest, usually through lack of sleep from late finishes to early mornings - my CNS is taking a beating and I find it the hardest thing to push out that progress. ✋🏼HOWEVER, we're all going to experience times where things aren't optimal, it's easy to look for excuses in that and back off. 🤷🏻‍♂️ If you don't have a specific, time relative goal then that's alright, let your body rest and recover and keep your priorities on feeling good and exercising for a healthy body and mind. 🙅🏻‍♀️If you DO have specific, time relative goals then you need to work through these tough times, because on the other side is your achievement, and the person you want to be. You've got to push yourself to your own limits, test yourself and sometimes even fail. 🙇🏼‍♂️ Understanding that failure is part of the learning process will allow your motivation to stay high, even seeking failure if you have to, in order to grow physically and mentally. Muscle Growth..... . do you need to train like a body builder to gain size? . heres my philosophy.... - 2016 > 2018 📆 - Aesthetics, body composition or “Muscle size” has never been a priority for myself or a major goal! Iv always focused on strength training, enjoyed strength training and had goals surrounding getting stronger... which will continue indefinitely!👀 - Let’s talk muscle growth or “Hypertrophy”... - There’s are 2 forms of Hypertrophy! “Myofibrillar” & “Sarcoplasmic” - Each adaptations are achieved through different styles or training in the gym! - MH is achieved mainly through strength training, lower reps and high weights! . MH adaptations will increase the number of Myofibrills in the muscle belly aka increase the amount muscle fibres giving you a more dense look aka the powerlifters! - SH is achieved through bodybuilder training “higher reps” & “lower weights” . SH adaptations will increase the size of each muscle fibre as apposed to the amount! Swelling & increasing the size of each muscle fibre will give you a more swole / bodybuilder look! - So there’s a quick post, do you need to train like a bodybuilder to get bigger? Hell no!.... although if your goal is only strictly muscle size & appearance.... then SH will be in your favour! - However, alternating between both SH & MH is highly recommended!! - “Use all your rep ranges” 🙌👌

Thriving on Thursday! This is probably the most consistent I've worked out 🏋️ since high school. Throughout medical school and intern year I always (incorrectly) thought ANY time away from the books was procrastinating. You need to find a balance ⚖️ to maintain wellness and avoid burnout! This shoulder press exercise uses dumbbells you can hold and maneuver the weights more freely than with a barbell. And so, the dumbbell press hits the lateral deltoids more intensely than barbell shoulder press movements. The end results include better developed outer deltoid head that give you more “capped” shoulders, and a more profound “V-taper” look. Check out this great way to help relieve random hip pinching in the crease of your hip with a heavy @team4kor band, brought to you by @dr.jacob.harden ・・・ WHEN ARE "QUICK FIXES" APPLICABLE? . Social media really likes to push the "quick fixes". Just roll on this muscle, use that massage gun, use this posture brace, scrape those adhesions away, etc and all will be fixed. It's like magic. 🎩🐇 . This is because we don't like discomfort and we want it to go away. It doesn't help that you've been told that pain is bad and that it's been attributed to mysterious BS like knots, adhesions, imbalances, misalignments, and bones out of place that these things are going to fix for you. It just doesn't work that way. They just temporarily change sensations. 🧠 . The problem I see with all of these quick fixes is the OVER RELIANCE on them and false narratives that surround them. They're useful and I don't mind you using them at all, but I don't want you having to use them every day. If the foam roller doesn't fix it the first time, the 6th time isn't going to be the one that gets you a break through. . Some things are random and self limiting. Feel free to try and hit them with some symptom modification. But if the problem persists, look deeper. Don't bandaid it. And that goes for this video and anything I post here. If your hip pinches day after day after day, then it's not random anymore and some training modifications probably need to be made, not a hip distraction everyday, because that's not helping it resolve. . The reality is, pain is a part of life. It's a part of the human experience. And you don't have to fear it all the time. Just learn to listen. Sometimes it's telling you to back off or change something. Other times it's a false alarm and just a random sensitivity. . Don't fear the random ache. In fact, feel free to try and modify it or just deal with it. But also realize that if you have to repetitively keep doing that to move comfortably, it might be time to change something else or get some help. It's all about balance in the end. ⚖ . The efficacy of stretching exercises to reduce posterior shoulder tightness acutely in the postoperative population: a single blinded randomized controlled trial. Salamh et al Physiother Theory Pract. 2018 . This paper looked at acutely post-op shoulder patients (no repairs, just debridements) and followed their ROM horizontal adduction and internal rotation after the surgery. . Group 1 was assigned the supine sleeper stretch and shoulder pendulum exercises. . Group 2 was assigned the standing horizontal adduction (cross-body) stretch and shoulder pendulum exercises. . Group 3 (control group) was assigned and performed shoulder pendulum exercises only and asked to perform 10 clockwise or counter-clockwise pendulum exercises twice a day. . The study noted that 'the horizontal adduction stretch is more effective at reducing acute posterior shoulder tightness in the postoperative shoulder population when compared to the supine sleeper stretch and no stretch at all. . Not surprised but wanted to share the information and maybe help someone use this for their clinical practice. . Not sure why they chose supine sleeper stretch versus sidelying sleeper stretch but most likely because of pain tolerance. . Traditionally, the sleeper stretch is performed in supineIn modifiedBy having the patient rollback to potentially put the shoulder in amore comfortable position. We wrote a paper about this in JOSPT 2013 with @wilk_kevin and @toddrhooks . I'm still more of a fan of the horizontal adduction stretch and use it clinically everyday for my shoulder patients. .
