acceleration power 💥 by @alex.natera 🙏🙏🙏 ・・・ For sure you have to build the engine but the engine needs to be tuned for the task. Strength & Power training needs to have a movement outcome in mind. If the outcome is acceleration then we need to be thinking joint angles, projection angles, time to apply force, type of muscle contraction, base of support and level of pre-activation to name just a few aspects. We can still work the spectrum of general exercises to specific exercises and we can still use a range of loads but we should always be addressing discrete aspects of the intended movement. Some exercises will address many aspects (like resisted accelerations) - others will only address one or two aspects (like the 1 Leg Smith Squat to Box). The number of aspects addressed dictate the specificity of the exercise. Explosive plyo ‼️🚀by @fowler_fitness_spt 🙏 ・・・ Constraint based plyometric drills are some of the most effective means for really getting athletes to do what we want in terms of technique and execution. - - Two uses for bands here: first, bands increase kinetic or “potential” energy on the way down. This forcibly loads the muscle-tendon structures and allows for a more powerful concentrically (the jumping back up phase) mediated muscle contraction. Remember, the best way to increase kinetic energy is by increasing the velocity of a given mass, not by increasing its mass. Bands do so by overloading/accelerating the eccentric phase. The cue here is to actually “hit the ground as hard as possible” not “land softly”. The more force you apply to the ground the more force you can apply in the opposing direction (Newton’s third law). - - Second, applying bands FORCES the athlete to physically get off the ground as quickly as possible otherwise you’re pretty much going to eat shit here. Box Hop by @alex.natera 🙏 ・・・ All hops are NOT created equal! Be sure to choose the variation that shares key biomechanical components of the movement you are developing. All 3 exercises are often used interchangeably but all 3 have very different performance outcomes. When it comes to upright running the Approach Step Up to Box Hop exercise is one that ticks a number of boxes for me. The natural activation-relaxation-activation of key muscles is used in the approach; following some vertical oscillation of the system the swing leg can be put in to a great position to actively and aggressively drive directly down into the step box; the drive into the step box demands stiffness from the stance leg and the spring (as in the spring mass model) does not have the time to compress; leg muscles contract isometrically at contact; ground contact is lightening fast (not measured yet - but I will soon); the tendon recoils and pushes the system into flight; and the active recovery of the stance leg is encouraged in order to land on the top box. That’s not always the answer. let’s take it back to physics 101: force = mass x acceleration. Muscular force can be increase two ways. First by increasing concentric and or eccentric bar/object acceleration, or by adding more weight to the bar. Kinetic energy also increases when either mass or velocity is increased (KE = / mv ). Here’s the catch: increasing the VELOCITY of an object has a greater overall effect on kinetic energy than increasing it’s mass. - - Here’s another example. Assume you drop a 20lbs Dumbell onto your toe from a drop height of 1 inch. Now assume you drop the same dumbbell from a 10 foot drop height—what do you think is going to cause a greater impact force upon hitting your toe? Clearly the latter. If two different masses fall at the same speed, the one with the larger mass will have more force upon impact, and even greater force when acceleration is added to the mix. - - The obvious conclusion that can be drawn from all of this is that MORE WEIGHT is not always the answer. For the reasons mentioned above, forces experienced by the muscles, joints, and tendons during common sporting actions (sprinting, throwing, change of direction) tend to exponentially exceed those experienced In the weightroom.
