How do you maintain pull-up strength without having a pull-up bar in your house? A suspension training system is one great way. @beepjz is demonstrating an “assisted” pull-up using her @humantrainer We use a Human Trainer in the studio instead of a TRX because the HT is two separate suspension units and uses clips to move the handles instead of sliding them up and down, it’s just our preference. Performing these pull-ups using your legs as little as possible is deceptively challenging (Jessica is making it look easy), and performing a high rep range will keep your muscles ready to get back to pull-ups when you have access to a bar. Try this❕One of my favorite supersets both in and out of the gym. Here we combine a decline (can also be done as flat) DB press with an inner single DB press 💪🏽 - By combining a heavy movement in the 8-10 rep range with a lighter movement in the 15-20 rep range, we are able to really stimulate the muscles and have a high amount of blood flow and contraction in the chest 😅 I did the decline press with 80lb DB’s and the inner press with a single 25lb DB. I’m not bored, YOU’RE bored. 🤣🤣🤣 ❗️Stair challenge❗️If you’re following my stories at all, you’ll see that I have adopted a new morning routine of climbing stairs and have turned it into a 30 minute workout routine. For those of you (the few of you 😝) who’ve asked for a permanent post about it, here you go! First, select the amount of flights you want to incorporate into your workout. I do 6, but you should do whatever you’re comfortable with, especially on your first round. Second, climb your stairs. Go up all of the flights at once, at whatever pace is comfortable but challenging. Third, perform a set of squats (I do 10) at the top landing. Then descend the stairs one landing at a time, performing a set of squats on each landing until you get to the bottom. Fourth, repeat! However many times you’re comfortable with. It takes me about 30-45 minutes to perform 6 flights 6x. Here are some squat variations you can use to keep things interesting: 1️⃣ Traditional squat 2️⃣ Wide stance squat 3️⃣ Narrow stance squat 4️⃣ Traditional squat with arms overhead (try to keep your body upright and don’t let your arms fall as you lower into your squat. These are a good variation to focus on form!) 💪 If you’re looking for non-squat exercises to do on the landings, try these: 1️⃣ Lunges (can perform on a stair for a step up lunge, or on the floor) 2️⃣ Jumping jacks 3️⃣ High knees (I often superset these with the jumping jacks on each landing) 4️⃣ Add a jump to any movement to make it harder!

Happy almost long Memorial Day weekend! Looking forward to the weekends is huge for me mentally, and I’ve set some traditions that make the weekend unique (hello homemade pancakes and pizza!) I try to apply that same mentality to my weekday workouts. I love when after a workout I feel totally spent, and it’s an extra bonus if I’m sore the next day. Last weekend after trying the koala challenge with Nick, I was sore ALL over (it was so much more of a workout than I originally thought) and it got me reminiscing about what it felt like to be truly sore. This week, I thought carefully about ways to really make my muscles feel like they’re working hard, despite the fact that I am working with limited equipment. Here are some things I came up with that I have either noticed that I already do, or have started to incorporate this week and LOVE: 1️⃣ I often superset, because it’s a great time saver. Typically I alternate muscle groups to give them a rest, but for the last couple of weeks I’ve been using the same or similar muscle groups for each superset, so as to exhaust the muscles even more (think cable/dumbbell squats immediately followed by banded squats where a small loop band is around your knees.) 2️⃣ If you are looking to really feel the burn but don’t have heavy weights, burn out those muscles before you begin your set with a body weight movement. This idea is similar to #1, but instead of thinking abt the burnout set as a superset, just consider it a primer exercise before the weighted version (think bodyweight squats immediately followed by cable squats) 3️⃣ If you don’t want to bother with a ton of reps, increase your time under tension for each rep - how can you increase the amount of time that your muscles are working. Think pause reps, 1.5 reps, slow negatives, and slow movement focused on perfect form. Above all else, enjoy yourself! When you do things, remember why you do them and that you’re doing them for reasons that you’ve deliberated for yourself. If you’ve made it this far into my caption, THANK YOU! Let me just say I feel like I’ve gained my quarantine 15 although I know I haven’t 😂 During this time I’ve definitely had my share of days where my eating habits have been less than ideal. ❗️Two *different* at home back moves❗️Anyone else trying their absolute best to incorporate variety into their days and workouts? Something that I love and miss about the gym is the ability to walk in with no plan or idea, and be inspired by the other people working hard and the equipment available to you. I’ve been trying hard to figure out some variety for myself to keep things interesting here, but also that I can share with all of you guys! Here are a two back moves that I tried last week and actually really liked them! 1️⃣ Use the edge of your Island or table to do a row/makeshift pull up. These are tough because you are also relying a lot on your fingers for grip (since you don’t have a handle). The more you can straighten your knees (and the less of your feet on the floor), the more difficult these will become. 2️⃣ Lat pull down - I have posted already about lat pull downs, but I discovered this adjustment and love it so much. The biggest problem I have with cable lat pull downs is that my bands are too long for me to truly get an up/down motion to target my lats (aka most of my cable back work feels like a row since I’m pulling mostly back instead of down). With this variation, I lean forward hinging at the hip with my spine still neutral, and then perform my lat pull down. At this angle, my arms are moving in a parallel motion to the my spine (as opposed to the angled/perpendicular movement of the row). 💡 Are these helpful? Happy Hump Day friends! During this quarantine I’ve definitely been kind to myself in remembering that this is a difficult and weird time, and you don’t necessarily need “goals” or tangible “accomplishments” to result from it to feel like you aren’t wasting your time. That said, a lot of my outside world goals have been postponed a bit, so I have replaced them with new small projects to work on. More so to give me something to look forward to working each day (and less so to feel like I’m coming out of this having achieved a “goal”). One of the little projects I’ve decided to pick back up is working on my balance and calisthenics. I’d love to be able to one day be able to do a handstand. For now, it’s forearm headstands *near* the wall, and practice handstands very much against the wall. In addition to handstands, I’ve been catching up on my favorite blogs (looking at you, @iamwellandgood), learning some new cooking techniques, and perfecting some of my original baking recipes (I’ll be posting cooking and food stuffs on my cooking page, @maddie_danza_cooks, so make sure you’re following for some good eats!) ❗️At Home Movement❗️I’m having trouble editing the workout I promised in my last post, so I’ll re-video it and post tomorrow, sorry! In the meantime, here are some movements I do while working at home stuck on calls. A couple important points on stretching: 🤍Muscles must be warm beforehand. Start with body weight squats, arm circles, and plank to pikes. 🤍Dynamic stretching (involving movement) should be performed before working out. 🤍Static stretching (holding a position) should be reserved for after a workout. 💡If you have questions about stretching, let me know and I’ll make a detailed post about it! 1️⃣ Hold a squat position while on your toes. If you aren’t used to this position, it might get uncomfortable quickly. This position is literally where I live my whole life while at home (whether I’m working or chilling) so that’s why I find it so comfortable. This position is good for ankle and hip mobility and strength. Please come out of this if you feel any discomfort at all. Work your way up to longer hold times! 2️⃣ Sock lunges! I love sock work in general because it forces stability muscles to really do their job while your body works extra hard to not slide to the ground. 3️⃣ Lateral lunge stretch - these are tough, especially if your hips are tight (aka mine). You can start by holding onto a secure object for support. In addition to your hips, you might feel it in the hamstring of your outstretched leg, so be sure you’re warm enough from your lunges before attempting this one. 4️⃣ Hip flexor stretch - Similar to the first one, but move your feet further apart until they can sit flush on the ground. Place your hands together and elbows inside your knees pushing them outwards. Play around with this one - you can sit your bum a little higher up for a groin stretch, or lean your upper body back and drive your bum to your heels to target those hip flexors. No matter your current level, always work on mobility because it allows for proper movement patterns during your exercises, which prevents injury. Who will try these on their next conference call?
