Nose-to-tail eating has never been easier with Ethical Farmers animal shares. We have just added our first ever pig share where you can purchase a quarter of a pasture raised pig which we will deliver to you. You will receive around 10kgs of meat plus bones for soups/stocks. Investing in a pig share not only makes great financial sense, it also embraces a nose-to-tail approach to eating meat which is more sustainable than only buying one or two different cuts of the animal. We also have cow and lamb shares available. For more information visit our website, link in bio 🔝

Back before COVID-19, I won first place in CAFF's (Community Alliance with Family Farmers) "Small Farm Tech Innovation Challenge". I spent 2 months traveling to Ag shows and demonstration driving over 5,000 miles. Our last trip was just before the  COVID-19 lock down.  Trying to launch a company and finish up development in the middle of COVID-19 proved to be very difficult, but I think we have done it. We have finished up the 3D models to day and the laser cutting should start next week. I am hoping to have the first 2 ready for delivery by July 1st. I already have firm orders for 6 and another 4 soft orders. #theFarmHand #theFarmHandTractor  #UrbanFarming  #UrbanAgriculture #RegenerativeAgriculture #Sustainability #OrganicFarming  #SustainableAgriculture #AgTech #AgriTech  #SmartFarming #PersitionAgriculture #AgriBusiness

We invite all food and agriculture industry colleagues, NGOs working on food and policy issues, and allies to the African American community to tune in as we offer up a powerful call on how we need to show up at the table and how we must each invite new voices to join us. Deconstructing the systemic inequality and injustice that has been built into America’s farm system has always been a core pillar of At The Epicenter’s mission and will continue to be a core part of our mission until we see an agricultural system that contributes to an equitable society. Please watch and share this short highlight of @robynobrienusa Regenerative Slam™ Diversity is Our Resiliency, from Women Leading Regeneration Summit 2020. The link to the full talk is in our bio. We will continue to share highlights from the Women Leading Regeneration community. Please LISTEN, LEARN and SHARE - thank you. #diversityandinclusion #diversity #diversitymatters #regenerativeagriculture #inclusion #justice #equity

Featured Hero: Ron Finley proves that planting regenerative gardens and building soil can change the world by building communities through urban garden education.⁣ 🌻⁣ After realizing that his South Los Angeles neighborhood had an abundance of accessible liquor stores but purchasing organic produce required a 10 mile walk, he decided to take matters into his own hands. ⁣ 🍎⁣ He believes that food is both the problem and the solution, and in 2010, he decided to create his own edible garden in the grassy median in front of his house, called a ‘parkway’ -- usually reserved for trash and weeds. He planted fruit and vegetables, resulting in an abundant 150 x 10 feet garden full of everything from strawberries to kale.⁣ 🍓⁣ There were initial complaints about being non-compliant with city code that turned into a citation and a subsequent arrest warrant to remove the garden. He started a petition that gained 900 signatures and along with a Los Angeles Times feature about his plight the city council changed their tune and endorsed Finley’s gardens. He was victorious!⁣ 🌽⁣ In 2012, he launched The Ron Finley Project, a nonprofit organization that turns food deserts into food forests, redefining our relationship with soil. His nonprofit also hosts a number of free community events to get local children and families involved with gardening. Speaking of Mabel, she serves Martin Acres and Highland Park neighborhoods today. Enjoy the day, and be careful - thunder roaring right now.

Protests worldwide in support of racial justice are touching a deep nerve for many of us. This is not a new problem, nor is it a distant one; in fact, the origins of European expansion and colonisation can be traced right back to the struggle to conquer Al-Andalus, culminating in the Capitulation of Granada in 1492. The very same year, Christopher America Columbus was given license and funding by the new sovereigns of Spain - at the Alhambra, no less - to travel across the Atlantic and conquer South America on their behalf. Thus began a bitter half millennium of rapine and massacre that has led to the unequal world in which we live today. Al-Andalus was renowned for being open to knowledge from many sources, from Greece to Persia, Syria, Yemen, or Rome. While it was not a perfect picture of equality, it was a pluralist society that recognised the contribution of many diverse people, coalescing in a dynamic, sophisticated, and productive civilisation. As Geoff Lawton said recently, "Diversity creates stability". Walnuts and apples don't grow well side by side, but if you introduce another tree between them, it neutralises this hostility, as well as contributing another crop to the orchard. This is just as true for us humans. We depend on diversity for the health of all our ecosystems. Climate justice is inextricably linked with racial justice. Food production is one of the key elements of a globalised economy that keeps prices low and profits high, and those that lose out are invariably the most underprivileged. The greenhouses along much of the south coast of Spain, where North and West African migrants work in abysmal conditions for negligible pay, are a case in point. We are committed to being a part of the change. Firstly, we wish to divest from these systems by seeking ever greater self-sufficiency. Secondly, we want to share this knowledge to empower others to do the same. Thirdly, we aim to invest in positive changes, through culture, arts and spirituality, so that we are actively working towards the wellbeing of our community. We pray that this is a model that inspires others. We stand with all those struggling against racial injustice.

Max loves to explain how our “volunteer” garden grew here (and all over the pig pastures/woods). Our pig nursery used to be in this particular space. I’m noticing something very troubling about my rose bushes this year. The leaves are perfect and healthy looking, right? There are no holes. That’s what everyone usually wants. 😔. I love roses. Our garden is even named a Rose for Yaminah. Roses are beautiful but they’re also sacrificial plants in our gardens. Native leaf cutter bees cut holes in the leaves and use the leaves to create habitat. Usually this time of year my rose bushes are full of holes. 😔😔😔. This is what is happening to our planet. I’m a regenerative gardener. I don’t use pesticides, herbicides, or fungicides. I mulch with organic material. I don’t till. I don’t pull weeds. I dig only to transplant plants and occasionally bury leafy material. I only use rain water. I plant lots of flowers and flowering herbs. I plant native plants. But we’re surrounded by homeowners who have monoculture lawns and don’t do any of this. They get lawn treatments. Most people don’t even plant flowers. I really hope this recession that’s coming causes people to want to save money and stop getting their lawns poisoned. Our native bees are important. If you think stores are pure pandemonium now, just imagine how they will be when there’s no food for anyone because all the pollinators are dead. If you’re worried about GMOs right now just imagine how the food supply will be when there are no pollinators and food producers are forced to manufacture ALL food in labs. Imagine the diseases that could spread if there is no nutritionally dense food. That sounds like something right out of an Octavia Butler sci-fi novel but it could be our reality. We’ve lost 80% of our pollinator population. WE ARE IN A STATE OF EMERGENCY. I’m working on doing something about it but we ALL need to do something about it. #pollinators #pollinatorgarden #regenerativeagriculture

☀️ #HealEarth

If you want different results, you need to act differently. In order to act differently, we must think differently. 🤔 When Allan Crockett teaches a Ranching for Profit School, he usually starts with an example he learned from Steve Chandler in the book, MindShift. 📙 Allan draws a circle on the board and an inside the circle writes “Your Existing Knowledge and Comfort”. He then asks “Where is your greatest opportunity for learning and growth? Inside your circle or outside?”. 👨‍🏫 It is a powerful example and one that reminds us that if we want to grow, we need to get outside of our comfort zone. #ranching4profit #agriculture #justranching #farmlife #bethechange #regenerativeagriculture #AllanCrockett #rancher

Let’s talk #Pawpaws North America’s Largest Tropical Fruit PawPaws are a nutritional powerhouse! While they have been adapted to the Ontario #🇨🇦 climate the #pawpaw is still quite sensitive especially new plants to the hot hot heat of #ontario summers. So with that in mind we have created the PawPaw cages. Think of them like little hats. The “hat” provides shade from the sun and protection from the #deer 🦌 As the #pawpaw grows taller, we will raise the “hat” up the bamboo poles providing continual shade for the new growth of the #pawpawtree Since #pawpaws grow into a pyramid shape this “hat” will also provide training. The more you know the more you can grow. Little Upstate Farm is about making our ancestors proud, by farming like they did hundreds of years ago, naturally without any kind of chemicals whether for feeding plants or killing bugs. Animals are raised as they should be outside in the grass, soaking up sun and fresh air. Rotating the animals to fresh pasture routinely regenerates the land. Think about the wild, a diversity of plants and animals working the land together. Leaves naturally decompose under trees, animal feces are left behind fertilizing the land and so much more! The land was created with such diversity for a reason. Commercial farming is destroying the land! All the tilling which kills natural organisms that live in the soil (which is crucial to the land) all the pesticides, and fertilizers, chemicals in general. And not to mention how much nutritional value you are losing from commercial farming. Produce is picked well before the nutrients in the fruits/veggies get to fully reach their max. They do that to ensure pristine looking produce after it travels across the country to your store. We learned of regenerative agriculture on Facebook, the farmers name is Joel Salatin from Polyface Farm. We watched and learned and new this is how we want to farm. Bringing it back to healthy, natural and LOCAL. You can expect the full nutritional value in all that we grow and raise as well as creating fertile soil along the way. Thank you for following us and keep watching. ...Chicks are on the way. 🐣👩🏻‍🌾🌱 #littleupstatefarm #regenerativeagriculture #polyfacefarm

Posey 🌈 Don't many of us have a love-hate relationship with social media? It can be seen as shallow, scattered with self-absorbed posers, or just I substantial or ephemeral. In the end our relationship to it is no different to any other media - the quality of that relationality is utmost. What are your intentions? Do you want to be admired? Do you want to inspire, stimulate discussion? Are you driven to heal yourself and those who Follow you? Are you posing, or curating a life full of meaning and wonderment? I'm a very biased ethnobotanist, who runs an organic no-dig market garden based within a regenerative agriculture project. Plants are silent, non-locomoting companions. And today I celebrate serving a local school - the children will soon be eating freshly picked seasonal produce grown with love, gratitude, daily prayers (and ofc sometimes frustration!). My prayers are for peace, within and without, and that all starts with what occupies our plates as a reflection of how we cooperate with our natural environment. When we imbibe these magical green beings they soon become part of our muscles, cells, skeleton. I "Follow" plants. I urge you to become a plant disciple and take your place within this celestial ministry to create the heaven on earth we we born to live within 🌞 #ethnobotany #plants #plantbased #plantbaseddiet #vegan #vegetablegarden #vegetarian #organicgardening #nodiggarden #nodig #marketgardening #soilhealth #soil #regenerativeagriculture #plantfitness

It’s been a real challenge growing a successful garden. When we first bought the property we learned that the fields were heavily farmed using 4-5 different herbicides/pesticides, synthetic fertilizers, and heavy tillage each season, thus degrading the soil and harming the ecosystem, so I determined that I didn’t want to grow our food and maintain several acres that way. In no way am I knocking conventional farmers, they’re practicing what they know, but I chose to accept the challenge at hand and practice alternate farming systems such as soil regeneration, permaculture, increasing biodiversity, and really just getting to know the land. I really don’t know shit about it all, but I do know that I’m already seeing a huge difference compared to last spring (which was a test garden). I do have a lot to learn - parts of the garden are still showing signs of nutrient deficiencies (which is always a work in progress) and there are still a butt load of trees to plant and chicken poop to spread, but everything is growing so green and lush, pollinators are pollinating, birds and good insects are taking out the bad bugs, and the deer are growing more curious! YOU can practice the same methods in a small space. I promise the experience is nothing but eye-opening and giggle-worthy. 😋

||SALTy Stories|| This week’s SALTy Story features Beau Belmont and Paul Wargo of @mountainrootsfarmtn in Sevierville, TN. They grow intensive vegetables year round on just a quarter acre and focus on quick growing, high value crops very similar to an urban farm. They sell to the greater Knoxville area at a farmers’ market, to restaurants, and have a newly added online farm store in which people can pickup at the farm. 🥬🥕 ||How does food inspire you?|| We are inspired by the beautiful dishes our customers create. Seeing the look on their faces at the market while scanning our display is a celebration of the food we’ve worked so hard for. 🥬🥕 ||What three things do you think are paramount in growing good food?|| Healthy, balanced, living and breathing soils have to be at the top of our list for growing the best quality, most nutrient dense food. 🥬🥕 Having a passion for farming is certainly a key element in good food growing. No one is farming to get rich that’s for sure. We love the lifestyle and the feeling you get from farming. 🥬🥕 And lastly, although there are many more factors, is the drive to do better. Striving to be a better farmer by learning from mistakes and taking some risks will certainly guarantee more successes down the road. 🥬🥕 ||What do you hope to share, inform, or educate others about food?|| One of our future goals at the new farm is to be able to host workshops in all things food growing. This would include things like the basics of setting up a kitchen garden and food preservation - fermenting especially. 🥬🥕 We also love to share pictures, experiments, success and failure via social media to inspire people that they can do it. We came from zero farming background. We are self taught and have learned everything through books, videos, online instruction, and our own trial and error. 🥬🥕 ||What's your S.A.L.T hat of choice and why?|| Beau’s fave S.A.L.T. hat is the radicchio. He would love a hat with the logo if one ever becomes available. Me too !! He wears it because he’s not good at growing it yet(fake it til you make it). 🥬🥕 Mine is def the carrot. One of our favorite and most rewarding crops to go. Never enough.

What every no-tiller loves to see👀 . . . Good morning from Hidden Creek🌱 Conventional corn is popping up nicely through the cover crop that was rolled last week. This year, we planted all conventional corn in the fields surrounding our home. Not thinking, hey, by the time this stuff is nice & tall we will have a walker (more like a runner) to be chasing after🤦🏼‍♀️ It should be an interesting late summer around here🤣 . . . . #rye #conventionalcorn #notillfarming #regenerativeagriculture #cornfield #familyfarm #farmher
