A recent study found a surprising reason why we may get fatigued when we run long distances. The researchers had participants perform a 10K run at near maximal effort and found that as the runners got fatigued they redistributed their effort towards their knees and hips as the tendons surrounding their ankles could no longer store and provide the elastic energy needed to sustain them. As the large muscles surrounding the knee and hip are larger and require more energy to generate power, it makes perfect sense that we should give our ankles a bit more attention if we want to smash out some long runs! As osteopaths we believe that structure governs function and it makes sense that building up the tolerance of the muscles and tendons surrounding the ankle could have an awesome impact on how far we can run before burning out. I often get sore ankle when I trail run and when running a marathon last year I felt serious pain around both my ankles while my knees and hips felt way better! this study suggests we should target our calf muscles (the muscles you use when pushing the brake in your car) when exercising. It’s located in your lower back on either side of the lumbar spine. It starts at your lowest rib and ends at the top of your pelvis. It’s common to have pain here because you use this muscle to sit, stand, and walk. The QL is one of the prime sources of lower back pain and can have an effect on your physical well-being. - What causes quadratus lumborum pain? - Pain in the quadratus lumborum can be due to overuse, stress, and strain. Sometimes muscles cause pain and stiffness when they’re weak or too tight. Activities such as sitting for long periods of time can reduce blood flow to an area, especially in the QL and surrounding areas. Pain can also result from repetitive motions and weak back muscles, which lead to poor posture. All of these factors can make you twist, bend, or lift improperly, which creates more tension. It can also lead to your QL becoming too tight if it has to overcompensate to stabilize your spine and pelvis. Pain in this area can also be due to accidents and unequal leg lengths. - QL pain that is treated in the early stages can usually be managed and improve over time. It could be a long process to fully heal this area of your body. But as long as you take steps to get better, you should see improvement. Try to stay as healthy as possible, and eliminate the sources of your pain. [ANTERIOR KNEE PAIN - GENERAL REHAB EXERCISES] ➡️➡️ 🏋🏼‍♂️ - Have you ever felt that nagging pain in the bottom of your quad, patellar or patellar tendon? Pain with jumping, landing, squatting, lunging or even walking? - That pain in the anterior (front) Knee could be caused from patellofemoral pain syndrome, which is a fancy term for front knee pain. This can be caused from a traumatic force like falling on it, overuse from repetitive jumping, or inadequate loading of that part of the joint. - Rehabbing this issue is vital to restore knee joint integrity and have it be able to sustain load well. These rehab exercises allow low level loading of the quad and patellar tendon, and can be easily regressed or progressed depending on your individual needs. - 1️⃣Eccentric Goblet Squat: Using a light dumbbell, held in a front rack position, slowly lower yourself down. Repeat 3x5-8. 2️⃣Eccentric Split Squat: same as goblet squat this should be slow and controlled on the way down and normal speed on the way up. 3️⃣ISO-Squat Hold ➡️Terminal Knee Extension: Hold the squat hold in 30ish degrees on one flexion for an isometric movement, then follow that with 5-8 terminal knee extensions. 4️⃣Pistol Squat to Box: this is a tough movement but is designed to only have you eccentrically lower yourself very slowly. Repeat 8-12 reps. 5️⃣Heel-Taps: these are a half pistol squat to a TKE. Repeat 8-12. 6️⃣Banded Terminal Knee Extensions: slowly fight the band pulling you towards the rig, and then once your knee is around 30-45 degrees extend your knee. Did you know??? . - Presents as lateral knee pain 👎. . - Common in runners, cyclists and more often than not endurance athletes as it is an overuse injury 🏃🏽‍♀️. . - Originally thought to be the result of friction between the ITB and underlying lateral epicondyle of the femur (🦴’y bit on outside of knee). . - Recent studies now suggest, rather than a bursa there is a richly innervated vascular layer of fat and connective tissue that seperates the ITB from the condyle of the femur which is more likely to be the source of pain 🥴. . - Due to the origin and insertion of the ITB, compressive forces rather than transverse can cause the frictional force leading to pain 🗣. . - One example that can lead to increased compression forces around the lateral knee area is increased tibial internal rotation causing the ITB’s distal attachment to move more medially 🤓. . - Tibial internal rotation may result from poor proximal control (increased hip adduction/internal rotation), genu varum (bow-legs), poor foot mechanics 🦶. . - Significant weakness of hip abductors is also common for runners with ITBFS as during the loading phase (stance phase) of running there is a resulting increase in hip adduction = compressive forces around lateral knee 🍑. . RANT OVER —> knee pain can be treated by strengthening above or below the joint, specifically the hips for runners.

I’ve never realized how beneficial pool rehab actually is until I’ve gotten to college. It’s now a daily ritual for me. I try to go every day after practice and do some dynamic stretching (high knees, butt kicks, karaoke, etc.). I also swim laps, usually breaststroke, to help get rid of any stiffness/soreness in my upper body as well as spinal decompression. The zero gravity effects of the pool allow me to get a better range of motion in my stretch with less exertion needed. On top of that, the water acts as a great source of compression and aids in blood flow throughout the muscles. I pulled my hip flexor during my game Saturday and had minimal strength and movement in it. For the same reasons as above, pool rehab allows me greater range of motion and less discomfort in my PT exercises. The compressive qualities of the water also support the muscle structurally when I’m exercising, another key benefit. #pool #pools #bigpoolguy #rehab #prehab #football #strength

-Ben Roethlisberger Injury- The Steelers have announced that Ben Roethlisberger will be out for the season. MRI revealed a torn Ulnar Collateral Ligament (UCL) in his elbow. This ligament attaches the humerus to the ulna on the medial side of the elbow joint. The UCL is complex in that it consists of three bands: the anterior, posterior, and transverse bands. The function of the UCL is to resist valgus forces, which quarterbacks are prone to during their throwing motion. The Steelers reported that their QB will undergo surgery, and the type of surgery will depend on the severity of the damage to the ligament. A common surgical intervention often seen in baseball pitchers is a UCL reconstruction technique known as Tommy John surgery. This technique takes a tendon from the patient’s own body (an autograft) or a cadaver (allograft) to reinforce the damaged ligament. 📖Make A Plan📖 .  Planning your workout not only increase productivity but also maximises results. . The picture above sets out a very basic way to plan your workout. Important to know that this is not set in stone or that it is the only way to plan a workout it is just here to give you some ideas. . Step 1 – Know your Goal -  Your entire workout should depend on your goal. If you aren’t working towards something chances are you are wasting your time. . Step 2 – Warm up -  The warm up sets you up for success. This should involve raising your core temperature as well as priming muscle groups and movements through mobility and activation exercises. @athletesauthority puts this well by following the three steps Release, Grease and Prime . Step 3 – Complete Main lifts -  The exercise here should be dependent on your main goal. If you want to get stronger big compound movements should be the focus. If you are looking for speed power exercises should be of focus. Whatever your goal may be this is the area of your workout that should focus on it. . Step 4 – Accessory Movements -  This section is to compliment your main goal. Exercises here should be based around smaller movements or corrective exercises that assist your main lifts. . So, there you have a pretty simple guide to planning a workout. As always this differs from person to person. The daily grind. . . This was about mid-way through the workout this week. Started off with heavy deadlift on the trap bar (not on the video). I started the next round with a KB deadlift to work on proper muscle recruitment and muscle squeezing with my hamstrings and glutes. Next was stir the pot on the exercise ball. The goal is not to move the rest of your body but to hold as still as possible. This exercise will target your entire core. . The last two movements, single leg hamstring curls and monster walks, are more for knee rehab. It’s very important to isolate each side of the body with an injured extremity. The body will always rely on the stronger side when pulling on a symmetrical lift, which will not help the rehab process.
