Keep cup in action.. but sadly the barista had originally made the coffee in a disposable takeaway cup 😩😩😩😩😩😡 My heart sank when I pointed out my reusable was still sitting on the machine... she remade the coffee for my keepcup but what a waste! Personally I think if more of us can bring a reusable cup for our takeaway coffees this can become the norm! Plastic free July In the process of trying to reduce my plastic use throughout the house, I’ve been converted to this delicious goodness! The glass jar will be repurposed in the kitchen once I’m done and even the bf liked it, I really didn’t think he would. I like mine over hot porridge with banana in winter. Experimenting... With so many lemons on my tree right now, I thought I’d give preserving lemons a go 🍋🍋 Salt and lemons.. top up with more lemon juice and leave for a month in a dark cupboard. This peg was one of the plastic finds when walking down Himitangi beach yesterday 🌊🌏♻️ There is nothing wrong with it, a simple wash was all it needed. Now added to my own peg basket. Instead of adding to our plastic pollution, I’ve given this piece of ‘rubbish’ a second life. We also don’t own a dryer! ALL of our laundry is line dried. -Plastic Free July- •Day 14• This ones for the ladies! If you’re still using disposable menstrual products I cannot recommend enough that you invest in a menstrual cup & reusable pads. I too thought they were icky when I heard about them a a year ago but after a few cycles and saving a bit of money I am hooked. Pads seem gross as you have to deal with cleaning them rather than disposing them but just soak em in some natural laundry powder and dry in the sun. Cups need to be sterilised in a pot of boiling water or you can use a silicon steriliser in the microwave. The initial payment for cups can be $$$$ pricy but they pay themselves off fairly quickly. Cups can be used longer than tampons and if you find the right one you won’t even remember you’re wearing it half the time 😂 For the first few uses it may be easier (and less messy) to try it in the shower first until you master your favourite “style” (way of using.) I have been trialling the Hello Cup & My Cup (pictured). Will update reviews soon.

-Plastic Free July- •Day 13• This ones not for everyone it’s really time dependant but cooking from scratch is the ultimate way to avoid plastic. 🥖 Everything here was made yesterday using bulk ingredients. At first I complained my family wouldn’t eat my package-free bread (they preferred the convenience of pre-sliced packaged bread) I regret that now, I finished a loaf last night and had to make a replacement an hour later 😂 Having a bread machine is great, I picked mine up secondhand. Throw all the ingredients in and the machine does the rest of the work in only 3 hours. Also pictured is cashew milk (some in the freezer for later too), vege curry from dinner last night, hummus (another 3 jars in the freezer) and banana bread (the middle fell out coz I flipped it prematurely 😂🙃). I’m lucky I have the time to make things at my leisure but being plastic-free doesn’t have to be stressing over finding time to bake at home, just do what you can. If you can make some things from scratch thats great; If you don’t have the time don’t worry, everyone approaches this differently. In future I may find these things time consuming and will have to source them pre-made from the supermarket but for now I am enjoying making my food and knowing all the ingredients that go in it.

-Plastic Free July- •Day 12• Plastic in the shower is non-existent for me now although my family still use bottled goods. Here I have what I choose to scrub with, listed from top to bottom: @onlygoodnz hair and body bar and @ecostorenz goatsmilk soap. For someone with sensitive skin I’m not super fussy with what I use on my body (so long as it’s not spicy -I made that mistake with @fairandsquaresoapery cinnamon soap 🙊) any other soap bar will do. 🚿 For my hair I have been swapping and changing all year between @dirtyhippieinsta (they have a great sample selection to trial), recently I found @onlygoodnz only $3 from New World! Only Good lathers really well, is cheap af, smells amazing and is available at the supermarket so Im loving it atm. 🔬Finding a bar that suits you can be hard and you may want to conform to whats popular; Ethique is readily available (so is Only Good though) I find Ethique way too overpriced, I haven’t tried their shampoo so not sure if it’s worth it BUT I picked up a makeup remover bar secondhand and do not like the consistency at all. @lushcosmetics is also popular overseas but another pricey one. Like most plastic-free items the bars do pay themselves off overtime so if you find spending $$$ on bars works best for you and you don’t mind spending $$$ then go for it! This is just for those of you who might not trust other labels or haven’t heard of them yet. Check out @dirtyhippieinsta @aorakinaturals @globalsoap etc to find small businesses supplying affordable goods! If you think I’m crazy for using a bar on my hair DW it lathers just the same as bottled just makes your hair feel a bit weird when wet. To condition I use an ACV (🍎cider vinegar) which smells weird when wet but goes away after your hair dries! If bars aren’t for you there’s always the option to refill instead 🤷🏽‍♀️ @mighty.eco is currently living the refill life.

-Plastic Free July- •Day 11• Another long one: Bulk Shopping If you live on the shore or way out west you are blessed w/ @thesourcenewzealand If you’re central there’s @goodforstore. Both of these stores provide the dream of using your own containers for everything from the kitchen to bathroom and a few reusables in between. @bin_inn_onehunga are all over NZ and encourage customers to bring their own containers but still supply a few things in bags for others. For me, I used to shop at @thesourcemilford -@mighty.eco lives 5 mins away, but he’s moving in with me so our new routine goes a little like this: Bulk Barn New Lynn: Take jars to weigh at counter then buy staples e.g flour, rice, pasta, oats. On occasion I will get cleaning supplies e.g baking soda, washing soda, vinegar etc Supermarket (New World preferred): Produce in produce bags or loose (Jut put in the trolley or basket as is) If I forget extra mesh bags I grab a few mushie bags 🍄 for the bulk section and buy what I can’t get at Bulk Barn e.g CONFECTIONARY (bad habit), dried fruit, bbq crackers/more unhealthy stuff. If I’m using my own bags I take a photo of the code to show the cashier or to use at self-service🍭🍬 I dont usually buy from the deli as I’m flexitarian but if you eat meat you can use your own containers to buy it from the butcher as well as fish or salad, cheese, pickles etc from the deli. Have your containers weighed, they will then put a sticker on to price it so don’t use your fancy containers if stickers bother you🍖 🥩 I hit up the bakery section with a tea towel and get either fancy bread (if I have been slack with baking) or a treat, I looove choc scrolls🥐 I’m not 100% package-free as I still buy glass and tin if I need to make curry etc. Sometimes I will head to the markets or fruit & vege shop 5 mins from my house for produce 🍇 🍎 If I’m near @goodforstore or The Source I will grab speciality items I can’t get out West. Other than that I am sorted with a routine and locations close to me that allow me to shop plastic-free. Shopping with your own packaging can be a bit daunting but trust me it becomes routine. -should probs start a blog, these posts are getting long at Auckland City Hospital

-Plastic Free July- •Day 10• I really should have mentioned these under “reusable bags” BUT that post was already long enough 😂 *American accent* 🇺🇸 PRO-duce bags 🍎 🍊 Super dooper handy little baggies that are good for carrying all sorts. (liquorice all-sorts?🤷🏽‍♀️) They come in a range of colours, sizes, material AND weight. I love natural fibres, which lead to me buying cotton produce bags at the start of my journey. Who could deny the beauty of cotton bagged produce? I learned a little way down the track the bags were a bit heavy (30ish grams) and weren’t very good for bulk food (I like minimising my ZW kit with multipurpose items) 💁🏽‍♀️ DW I still use them as jar cosies and pencil cases etc ✏️ Synthetic fabrics aren’t great for the environment but they roll up tiny, stretch heaps, tend to have a smaller mesh and weigh less making them super versatile for bulk food, bakery goods, nut milk straining, vege scrubbing -you name it! I don’t beat myself up so much when using @Little.Eco synthetic bags because they’re made with recycled materials after all and they’re just SO handy. 👌🏼 Using jars to buy bulk food can be a little stressful the first few times, I eased into it with paper bags and produce bags (you don’t always have to use purpose made cotton bulk bin bags🤷🏽‍♀️) The supermarket bulk bins only supply plastic, that’s where the mighty produce bag comes in handy. Grab a bag full of pick n mix confectionary (yes, one of the only things the supermarket is good for 😂) take a photo of the product code to show the checkout operator you know what you’re doing (or go to self-service if you’re feeling a little nervous, small steps still count remember?) 👣 I have also gone as far as buying pies from the bakery (yes, multiple pies) in my produce bag 😂 the person looked so concerned for my sanity 🙃 I couldn’t find a container okay?!?! Any whooo produce bags are lifesavers, small enough they don’t take up too much space in your bag and super versatile for whatever the day throws at ya. Sweet. 🍑🍅🍐🍋 at Waitakere, New Zealand

-Plastic Free July- •Day 9• Beeswax Wraps🐝 just released into the shop so what better time to talk about them? if you are vegan I have seen alternative wraps online so you don’t have to miss out. Ditching the convenience of glad wrap can be tough but it’s a no brainer. Wrapping everything in plastic wrap would be a nightmare to me now 😂😩 Making beeswax wraps yourself takes a bit of trial and error if you want them to perfectly replace glad wrap (my first batch weren’t sticky enough) But once you find the right recipe or right brand (say @honeywrap , @matuihoney @nzhoneytraders, @sustomi, @nilproducts just to name a few) theres no turning back. Wraps look cuter, smell nicer, are reusable and compostable at the end of their life. Pimp out your kids lunches, fridge or pantry with colourful wraps! I carry some on me to wrap dirty straws/cutlery and to wrap the odd bit of food. I’ll be honest, I wasn’t a fan of beeswax wraps in the beginning, I found the ones I had didn’t stick well... Now though, Im in loooove.

@little.eco

-Plastic Free July- •Day 8• Let’s round off the week with another UYOC. 🥣Use your own container. Anywhere you would usually collect a plastic container choose to take your own instead: 1) When buying takeout call ahead of time and ask if it’s okay to bring your containers in. 🥘 2) B uses his own container for smorgasbord up the road, you only have to ask politely.🥡 3) My favourite is buying sushi in my tiffin! Still following the same procedure any other customer would except using my own container. 🍣 4) Carry a container on you to take leftovers home from restaurants. 🥞 5) Another one we trialled today was using your container at the supermarket! 🛒 I don’t tend to buy meat (I choose to eat vegetarian as often as I can) but if you still buy from the deli or butcher at the supermarket you can take your own jar/container/bowl/bucket 🤷🏽‍♀️ They will tare the container and put a sticker on for price. If you’re not quite up to the stage of handing over your own container (I sometimes get nervous with size difference/prices) maybe try reusing one they usually give food in? That way it’s no different to what the establishment always provide. It’s the little steps on this journey, it takes a bit of confidence and practice but after a while it will become a part of your normal routine. Give it a go, ask to use your own container next time you want food on the go. at New World Mt Roskill

-Plastic Free July- •Day 7• Bamboo toothbrush 👄 Make the simple swap, you can pick one up from New World while browsing the other eco options at the supermarket or online. 🖥 There are so many on the market I have used @theecobrush, @thesourcemilford pictured is @mighty.eco’s @grinnaturalproducts brush purchased from @grocersatmetro for a little over $3 (Ive popped a spare rubber band around the handle so it can sit up in our toothbrush stand.) I haven’t had an issue with smell using these brushes, however I have had an issue with mold (started with B’s brush and spread to mine) so now I make sure they stay super dry/drip dry after I brush in the shower. It’s recommended to change brushes every 8 weeks but I try to make the most out of them as the bristles are still nylon and not compostable. 🐛 The rest of the brush is though; to compost you just pull the bristles out with pliers or if you don’t have time snap the head off and pop it in the compost! The packaging is almost always simple recycled cardboard and can be composted too. I haven’t settled for a particular brand yet, it’s all trial and error (some bristles are tough, handles are awkward etc) but if you’re still using a plastic toothbrush please, make the switch. at Auckland, New Zealand

-Plastic Free July- •Day 6• Razors I have joined the #BodyHairMovement so am hairy af atm, learning to accept my natural form (for now). But if you’re still shaving through winter and haven’t switched yet... Ditch the plastic and pick yourself up a safety razor! Providing a closer shave and zero plastic what more could you ask for? I have had an @albatross_sailing razor since March. I chose Albatross as they’re on an endeavour to save our ocean! Albatross send their razors plastic-free and also have a recycling program for their blades! Made from stainless steel it has a good weight and quality feel. Before purchasing I was sh*t scared about having a near naked blade to shave with but after a few tries I nailed it, so many people can agree it’s one of the best switches to make! I will admit I nicked myself a few times (I’m a lazy shaver, scroll down to find my review a few months back 😂). But if you’re super worried just search YouTube, it helps heaps! Safety razors work out a heck of a lot cheaper, the blades last ages and only cost a few cents each. To recycle the blades I have a sharps bin which gets recycled at a pharmacy but you can easily collect them in an empty tin (i.e spaghetti, peaches) squeeze the top of the tin closed so they don’t escape and then pop them into your recycling bin! I can do a tutorial on how to use a safety razor (when it comes time to get rid of the fuzz) if anyone is interested! They’re a life changing investment definitely worth the switch!

-Plastic Free July- •Day 5• Reusable Straws😉 Straws aren’t 100% necessary, we have a 👄 to drink with after all! But who wouldn’t start carrying straws after seeing the turtle vs straw video? 😭 (don’t know what I’m talking about? if you have the stomach: @google it) I like the luxury of drinking out of a stainless steel straw as well using my straw to set an example and spark conversations about why I choose to refuse plastic. Having a reusable straw helps remind me to ask for drinks without. In the beginning it was hard to get used to asking for no straw I would get angry at myself when a drink was served with one because I forgot to ask... Don’t fret! Don’t beat yourself up like I did, it’s all about the journey; you recognise the damage straws cause, just have to perfect asking for no straw as if you’re allergic to them 😂 I have finally got into the habit as if it’s an ingredient in drinks I order “Can I please get an ice mocha with no straw thanks?” There are plenty of great brands out there if you are wanting to own a reusable straw yourself but you don’t have to buy a straw because you’ve seen them in photos online, your mouth makes a pretty good drinking tool on its own. Pictured: bubble tea straw, acrylic straw, long straw, standard straw, compostable bristle brush.

Had the incredible opportunity to go to @mainstreamgreen’s event ‘Living with Less’ last night, thanks to winning an @ecostorenz competition. Such a great chance for me to show my mum simple changes she can incorporate into our home and/or letting me sell everything and downsizing 😂😉 I highly recommend visiting this workshop if you need some fresh ideas or encouragement about living your zero-waste lifestyle. If you’re just starting out and are not sure where to begin or if you’re already on the pathway to success but need to get some friends/family on board too (cue taking my mum). I had the lovely @homemaid_in_nz come over and say hi and share with me the amazing steps she is taking on her journey to becoming zero-waste. If you ever see me out and about feel free to come over and say hi! I’m not too awkward and am getting better at talking to people offline, I promise 😂😅 Got to take home some @ecostorenz products in little reusable jars so mum can trial them to help with her transition choices! -Plastic Free July- •Day 4• 🍴 C-U-T-L-E-R-Y 🍴 Something you wouldn’t think would come in handy but boy oh boy once you start carrying your own you realise how much single-use cutlery you can avoid. • I am someone who likes visiting markets and am often too lazy to cook so I go out for food. I have found a lot foodcourts only supply single-use plastics and cutlery with their meals, much like at night markets. I even recently dined in a popular Japanese restaurant that supplied disposable chopsticks 🙄🙄 Rather than avoid these places (who can deny cheap and delicious cuisine?) I started carrying around my own knife and fork (oh, and of course an extra set for @mighty.eco alongside enough for an extra person). • My mum and I didn’t like the idea of having to carry around large and heavy cutlery on top of all our other reusables so when we stumbled across some mini cutlery while out and about it was a no brainer. We then chose to sew ourselves some cutlery wraps to keep our utensils clean and easy to find (that’s one of the reasons the @little.eco product line came about). • Pictured is my standard size cutlery wrap that fits some beeswax wraps (for leftovers or wrapping dirty cutlery) a knife, chopsticks and 2 forks. ➡️The next wrap is a mini cutlery wrap for when I don’t want to be too bulky (it also fits a spare fork for @mighty.eco) the mini wrap can fit a beeswax wrap or napkin as well. • More than 50% of all plastic made is for a single-use, wouldn’t you like to break that cycle? It always feels better using real utensils instead of plastic, you don’t have to chase food around your plate or break your fork trying to stab into something tough 😅 Real cutlery always looks better too. • Have less plastic in your life, less chance of having toxic chemicals as a side with your meal. #ChooseToReuse • If you would like any of these wraps for yourself, I have them listed on facebook at the link in bio 😇✨

@little.eco

-Plastic Free July- •Day 3• Let’s talk hot drinks. ☕️ Takeaway coffee cups have a plastic lining which make them a mixed material and are there for not recyclable. You can get biodegradable and compostable coffee cups but they aren’t any better. Both “eco” alternatives to your standard plastic coffee cup need certain environments to break down which isn’t supplied if they are sent to landfill. Establishments selling compostable cups have to have them sent to a commercial facility that can compost at high temperatures to break down (like @welovecompost). Otherwise “biodegradable” and “compostable” plastics are just the damn same as any other plastic on the market. So, don’t take the risk. Tip number 3: Use your own cup. 🥛 It doesn’t have to be fancy, even an old jam jar works (just ask your barista nicely) OR search up @uyoc.nz online (they’ve done the hard work for you ✅) UYOC have an online directory with all the nicest and welcoming cafés who support using your own cup (uyoc for short). Here are a few I have around home, being overly prepared there are enough for one per family member, a different one for certain moods, weather... just kidding, it depends on where we are going. For travel; plastic cups are a lot smaller and lighter so they take up less space. If I don’t want to carry a huge ZW kit with me I take a jar as they are super versatile for smoothies, leftover food, bulk buying etc. If I’m feeling fancy or I am 100% going to have coffee I take a glass cup as they keep the drink fresher for longer. Keep an eye out when op shopping, once again only one of these cups were purchased new (swipe across for the @keepcup @mighty.eco scored from work because it was going to be thrown out) Use what you have! As I said, it doesn’t have to be fancy but if you choose to buy new know that it is an investment if you drink a lot of coffee/hot chocolates etc. I haven’t had a cup break on me yet (🤞🏼) so I have definitely got my moneys worth this far (maybe because they were secondhand bargains 🤷🏽‍♀️) If you’re wanting suggestions for awesome cups I’ll list some in the comments below. If you’re already a reuser, what cup do you use and love? let me know😇💖 at Waitakere, New Zealand

-Plastic Free July- •Day 2• Reusable drink bottles. Here are my weapons of choice: @ecotanka_eu 750ml $5 and @mybkr 500ml $1 both purchased secondhand. I was guilty of purchasing disposable water bottles. Every time I visit @mcdonaldsnz I would order a water a) because their fizzy drinks are crap and not good for you. b) you got a a fresh bottle of Kiwi blue by @cocacolanz instead! win-win? Nope. Approximately 1500 bottles end up in Landfill & our beautiful ocean every second. Only around 78% get recycled in New Zealand AND bottled water has been found to contain micro plastics. BIG NOPE NOPE NOPE. Anyone who I used to work with would know I always had a disposable water bottle on me because the water at work taste bad. I then learned the devilish facts behind single-use bottles and decided to make the switch forever. I’m not only saving money now but am also helping the planet. 🌏 If you run empty while out and about more cafés and establishments are coming on board to let you refill for free! 💧 You can check out @uyoc.nz to find a place near you. If you’re wanting to change something for Plastic Free July and you haven’t got yourself a reusable drink bottle yet, definitely get one! My two are super durable, the ecotanka keeps my water cold and my bkr is small enough to fit in my bag comfortably. I will never buy disposable again.

@little.eco

-Plastic Free July- •Day One• In regards to my story last night this post is about Plastic Bags. In order to avoid them I almost always have a reusable bag on me (a small @pouchproducts bag etc) or I choose to carry my purchases instead. To help with remembering bags we keep some in the car. If I forget bags when shopping I will put the trolley aside and take a dash to the car to retrieve them or pop everything loose into the trolley to pack into bags at the car. We have a set of hooks in the kitchen and by the back door so we never misplace our reusables (and they look cute too). Hooks also provide easy access to grab a few bags when rushing out the door. When home, it helps to make a habit of putting away your shopping and then packing your bags up ready to go on your next trip or have enough so there are always some in the car! Refusing plastic bags can be awkward at times but a lot of places are starting to understand. Use your voice: a simple “No, thanks” followed by “it’s fine with out a bag” or “I brought my own” will soon become less awkward and will instead become a natural instinct. Good luck out there with tackling those pesky plastic bags! 💖 (The back door hook also has a plastic bag off to the left filled with soft plastics my parents purchase. Recycling isn’t the answer but for them, it’s a step in the right direction.) at Auckland, New Zealand

Man I love costumes! The opening party for #wds2018 was “80’s gym theme. My costume is made from bed sheet, microfiber dusting cloth, old athletic shirt from the #goodwillbins and stuff I already had. #green #upcycled #accessories #budget #save #thrifty #thrifter #ecofriendly #ecofashion #sustainable #sustainability #sustainableliving #savetheplanet #savemoney #eco #reuser #bargainhunter #wiw #upcycle #upcycledfashion #repurpose #reuse #wastereduction

The original #reuser my dad 😂 - This sleeping bag is older than me and is still going strong 💪🏼 - Avoids unnecessary (and necessary) technology at all costs - does not own formal wear, just re-wears the clothes he wears for teaching Love ya dad 💕😂 #zerowastedad at Sandy Bay, Tasmania, Australia

In case you didn’t know you can use your own cup, jar, mug, bottle, tube, flask, container, pot, bowl (you get the drift) at @tankjuicenz now! Head on in and show them and fellow customers how you’re doing your bit for the planet. Thanks to @uyoc.nz for bringing awesome kiwi companies on board with reusing! Check out @uyoc.nz’s directory online for more places you can take your reusables for a trip 🚲 Ft. a @habitualfix smoothie jar, sorry Tank 💁🏽‍♀️🤷🏽‍♀️ at WestCity Waitakere

Great day for some washing! Bed linen out the back on the good old school rotating line (no one ventures to that part of the property to hang washing often as we have 4 lines in the carport 🙃) here on the a-frame we have some cloths (cut up old towels), hankies (overlocked fabric scraps) a @rethink_nz net bag and some @little.eco produce bags! Winter tends to leave washing feeling meh when drying outside (takes ages too) so I’m snapping up this sunshine!!! ☀️

WELLY spent the day shopping yesterday, bought a few bits and pieces... all of them being eco 😂 After a beer we started wandering down for dinner at Aunty Mena’s stumbled across @tleaft again, thought it weird they were open and we were tipsy so tried our luck asking for a 250gram bag of tea for Kombucha (went in earlier in the day, had a sookie coz I couldn’t find any) Voila! Got me tea just as they were closing 😂 Pictured: •Beeswax from Made Marion Craft •Sandalwood soap @ecostorenz •Laundry bar @globalsoap •Compostable floss @theecobrush at Fork and Brewer

Took this antique wardrobe and cut out the middle and made a tv stand/table. Saved the mirror portion too for a later project. #reuser at Eagle, Idaho
