I’m known for painting stuff like this, so why not do a little more. :) This’ll be one of the last pieces I’ll post before I head off to the #asylumsteampunkfestival in Lincoln. And then on to #silwersteam, and the #hastingssteampunkfestival.. I am very grateful for the support and faith of the staff and organisers. And thanks to you, friends and supporters, for simply following me online and sharing in my welter of quaint little dreams. I’ll keep this up for as long as it takes for airships and classical architecture to really leave the drawing boards again (:D). I hardly travel, so I’m looking forward to chatting with anyone curious about what my work’s about, and why I do it. . . . . . #findingcalais #tiangpong #steampunk #steampunkart #steampunktendencies #lincolnsteampunk #asylumsteampunk #silwersteam2019 #whimsical #lostworld #belleepoque #meteora #fantasyarchitecture #revivalarchitecture #baroquearchitecture #evening #zeppelin #airship #dirigible #newclassicalarchitecture #wonder #exposition #expositionart #sgillustrator #mailship

Spent a few hours this evening at one of my favorite museums. This gorgeous piece of architecture emulates a 15th century Venetian Palace it was completed in 1903. Isabella Stewart Gardener an art collector and philanthropist had this built to house her expansive art collection. In 1990 the greatest art heist of all time took place here and the mystery is still unsolved, swipe to see the empty frames where the criminals cut the paintings! (one was Rembrandts only known seascape). Swiss-style tower in New Glarus, Wisconsin. New Glarus, known far and wide for its brewery of the same name, has a history dates back to 1845 when representatives from Glarus, Switzerland settled in the town, prompted by economic downtown in their home canton. The full story of the early founding of New Glarus is fascinating but too long to recount here—but within a few years, there were over 1000 Swiss immigrants living in the fledgling town on the Little Sugar River in the gently rolling hills of southern Wisconsin. At the site along the River is evidence of inhabitation going back much longer than the 19th century. Gonzáles-Alvarez House, St. Augustine, Florida. ca. 1723, with late 18th century additions. Known locally as the “Oldest House”, this Spanish colonial-style vernacular home dates to at least 1732, although the land was occupied since at least the 17th century. St. Augustine, Florida is the oldest continually-inhabited European settlement in the continental United State, being founded in 1565. At the time of the first Spanish landfall at St. Augustine In 1513, the land was home to the Timucua people, who thrived in Northeast and Central Florida. The city changed hands several times and has a beautiful collection of 18th century Spanish colonial homes, and later French- or English-style buildings. What's your favorite kind of afternoon activity when in a new city? Exploring the historical places around or hitting a popular coffee shop or restaurant or just going on planned touristy walks? • I am someone who would probably end up doing all of this but definitely start with the first. Its got to be something of historical value or something absolutely artsy. Raleigh was no different in this regard. One Saturday afternoon, i decided to explore the State Capitol and voila, before I even realized, I had spent three hours already! • An interesting thing about this building apart from its Greek Revival Architecture is the apparent spookiness and the stories that tell so! . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . #northcarolinastatecapitol #northcarolina #raleigh #visittheusa #visitnorthcarolina #visitraleigh #raleighnc #northcarolinahistory #historyfacts #greekarchitecture #revivalarchitecture #travelling #traveldeeper #travelphotos #traveltheworld #travelphotography #wanderlust #exploremore #thetriangle #thefnftravels #travelgram #passionpassport #travel_captures #travel #travelcommunity #traveldiary #history #womantravel

I've frequently walked right past this building and never realised that inside it holds a Revivalist time capsule lovingly preserved by the Casa do Alentejo cultural association. Built in the 17thC as a palace for the aristocratic Pais de Amaral family, it got it's current Casablancan inspired facelift in 1919 when it became one of the first casinos in Lisbon called the Magestic Club. This phase of its life didn't last long, and in 1931 the cultural association moved in, using the space as a headquarters for outreach to the Alentejan community in Lisbon and to promote cultural initiatives which are active to this day. To climb the stairs up to the main courtyard is to begin a journey back in time to exactly a century ago. It is phenomenal to find a historical architectural space so well preserved and still so well used without suffering the insecurity that so many places do to follow contemporary trends. Furniture, azulejos, signage, finishes, joinery, glazing, even the carpets and curtains transport you to 1920s grandeur, and thematic escapism. Isn't it amazing how adaptable palaces can be? . . . . . . . #lisbon #palacioalverca #learningfromlisboa #igerslisboa #igersLx #ig_portugal #portugalemclicks #casino #courtyard #ilovelisbon #secretlisbon #travelgram #revealportugal #liveportugal #mylisbon #gramgraphy #huntagramportugal #artenova #olhoportugues #revivalarchitecture #casablanca #casadoalentejo #traveldeeper #lisbonarchitecture #lookdeeper #beautifulmatters #historylover #livingmuseums

In May I had to spend a few hours in between appointments and train connections at the Philadelphia 30th Street Station. For the first time I had the chance to enjoy without rush the place's grand feeling and architecture. Designed by Alfred Shaw between 1929 and 1933, it consists in an eight-story steel frame building. The exterior is neoclassical while the interior is enriched by a beautiful coffered ceiling and Art Deco chandeliers. It is both functional and monumental.

Located on the boundary between #Boston and #Brookline, #CottageFarm was an early housing development aimed at providing comfortable housing in seemingly rural surroundings. Originally owned by David Sears, whose son lived in the earliest (1843) house in the area, much of the land was later purchased by #AmosLawrence, who developed the area as a #Bostonsuburb in the 1850s. Following the popular tastes of the time, set forth by #architects including #AndrewJacksonDowning and #AlexanderJacksonDavis, many of the early houses in Cottage Farm were #English-inspired, #GothicRevival and #TudorRevival cottages, all set on comfortable lots. Although a great deal of construction took place in the 1900-1920 timeframe, a handful of the 1850s houses survive, including this one, built for (and #designed by) #architect #GeorgeMinotDexter. With a conspicuous date-stone (1851) over the front door, Dexter’s residence was an ornament to the new development, with its dormers set slightly in front of the facade, and its handsome #Roxburypuddingstone exterior. When thinking of shopping centres, you might think of premier retail destinations such as Shopping City, Runcorn and St Johns Shopping Centre, Liverpool. Or, like me, you might hate them for there sterile atmosphere and the endless march of bored shoppers driven on by the prospect of a chain brand americano and tray bake at the end of a hellish day. Such is the lack of appeal of these locations that the (delightfully witty) travel writer Bill Bryson wrote: "We used to build civilisations. Now we build shopping malls". But, it gets even worse than the musings of a travel writer, for in geography, there is something called sense of place. This is a concept linked to our perceptions of a location and what makes it unique. Shopping malls are often regarded as locations of placelessness, i.e they are locations that we do not/cannot identify with. As you can see, they have little going for them (in my opinion), so imagine my suprise when I found myself in Chester, faced with the rather monochrome view of Chester Rows. Dating from the medieval period onwards, the split-level covered shops in the Rows are one of the longest continously occupied shopping centres in the world. When I first saw this, I was intrigued, and after 2/3 of a pint of Cloudwater West Coast IPA in the undercrofts at Beer Heroes, I was even inclined to change my opinion on shopping centres. Don't worry though, I didn't. Shopping centres are still awful places, but maybe I can make an exception for Chester. . . . #chester #cityofchester #chesterrows #cheshire #urban #city #town #shopping #shoppingcentre #deeside #walledcity #timberframes #building #architecture #revivalarchitecture #lockwood #1bridgestreet #rows

St. Mary’s Basilica⛪️ . . . . The Church of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary (St. Mary’s Basilica) is the oldest Catholic parish in Phoenix & was the only Catholic parish in Phoenix until 1924. From 1872 until 1881 priests from Florence, Arizona traveled by buggy every three months, to conduct the Catholic liturgy. The church was constructed in the Mission Revival style. The interior is in the Romanesque style. On September 6, 1976, St. Mary’s was named an historic site by the Arizona Historical Society. On October 17, 1977, the church was added to the State Inventory of Historic Places of Arizona. St. Mary’s was placed on the National Register of Historic Places on November 29, 1978. On September 2, 1985, His Holiness Pope Saint John Paul II solemnly proclaimed the church to be a Minor Basilica. While on his American visit, Pope Saint John Paul II visited St. Mary’s kneeling in prayer in the center aisle and speaking to the crowd from the balcony on September 14, 1987. We like big buttresses and we cannot lie… . This remarkable building is Norwich’s SECOND Cathedral (how spoilt are we - we’ve got two!), and despite it looking as fabulous as the other one, it’s a mere baby in historical terms, being only just over a century old (it was completed in 1910). Incredible. . Like the Taj Mahal, it was effectively designed as a ‘love token’. Henry Fitzalan-Howard, 15th Duke of Norfolk funded its construction as a generous gift to the Catholics of Norwich as a sign of thanksgiving for his first marriage to Lady Flora Abney-Hastings. Tragically, she died long before it was finished. . The Cathedral is located on one of the highest points in the city, where Unthank Road meets Earlham Road. It was constructed to designs by George Gilbert Scott, Jr. Much of his work was in the late Gothic and Queen Anne revival style, and this building is considered to be one of the finest examples of Victorian Gothic architecture in England. . St John the Baptist Cathedral in Norwich is the second largest Roman Catholic cathedral in England, the largest being Westminster Cathedral. . The Cathedral offers regular services, tower tours (which are incredible and offer amazing views across Norwich) and other events. If you’ve never been inside and had a look around, we highly recommend it. #traveltuesday

1850 Thompson mansion in downtown Montgomery. Stately Greek revival home with Corinthian columns lining the front of the house. I’ve always found the cast iron balustrade of ornamental lyres to be especially charming. Both sides of the house feature an arcaded Italianate style latticed porch, glimpsable from this photo. The home was originally located in Tuskegee, Alabama until faced with demolition in the 1980s. It was subsequently bought, dismantled, and stored by a gentleman in Georgia. In the late 80s Montgomery’s Landmarks Foundation had the opportunity to purchase the pieces and the house was reassembled in Montgomery. #archilovers #oldhouselove #oldhousecharm #archi_ologie #architecture #mymgm #exploremgm #houseportrait #renovation #archidaily #antebellum #greekrevival #preservation #restoration #revivalarchitecture #americana #historicarchitecture #downtown #alabama #montgomeryalabama #history #historicpreservation #deserve2preserve #architecturelovers #architecturephotography #southernmansion #building #classic #greekrevivalarchitecture #greekrevivalantebellum

ca. 1927 Built just prior to the collapse of the U.S. economy, this home was in part influenced by American soldiers returning from combat in the Great War. Although it resembles the like-minded and contemporaneous Tudor Revival, this style is best classified as Norman Cottage, a rural variant of French Revival architecture. Given the agricultural fabric of life in Normandy, living quarters were often attached to a barn or silo where grain was stored. This utilitarian necessity resulted in the prominent central turret/silo that announces the entry to many of these informal farmhouses. In addition, the style commonly incorporates a steeply pitched roof, stucco exterior, and rounded wood front door. The result is a cozy, cottage-like aesthetic, often found in urban neighborhoods. #cincinnati #mountlookout #archi_ologie #oldhouselove #frencheclectic #normancottage #revivalarchitecture #architecture #architecturephotography #architecturelovers #queencity
