Why are people so black and white with their thinking?β € *β € I recently saw a post in a fitness group here on FB where a woman was asking for help on how many calories she should eat. She was confused with all of the information out there and mentioned about battling adrenal fatigue. * A comment from someone said adrenal fatigue was a fake disease and that it all boils down to calories in, calories out.β € *β € And while I get that basic science states this, I think this comment is not in the least bit helpful to this woman. She is struggling and seeking advice and a disingenuous comment like that isn't supporting her. It's casting blame that she is doing something wrong if she can't lose weight.β € *β € Do calories matter? Yes.β € *β € But there's more to it than just that basic equation. Hormones and how your body responds to food (inflammatory response) also matters. I tracked calories for years, sticking to 1200/day and NEVER losing weight. * Based on what this person said, I would be eating too much. The fact is, once I started eating more, figuring out foods that my body didn't hate, and balancing out my hormones, the scale started shifting.β € *β € Weight loss isn't just eating less and you'll lose weight. The most difficult thing is the decision to act, the rest is merely tenacity. -Amelia Earhart β€’ I honestly can't remember the last time I worked out. It's been awhile though and I'm not sure why I've lacked the motivation. It could be stress, hormones or any number of things. I actually met with a physician today to dig deep into why I've been feeling off. I'll share more on this as I go on this journey. β€’ But today, I worked out. It sucked. It hurt. I wanted to die. I've lost strength and had to do push-ups on my knees. And you know what? It's fine. I shouldn't expect to jump in where I left off and neither should you. The point is to just start again. β€’ Action brings motivation. It's not motivation then action. For me, action meant taking on @jillfit's #metconmonster challenge today. I completed 4 rounds of these 4 moves using 15lb dumbbells. I did a lot of resting and praying for the strength to finish. πŸ˜‚ β€’ If you find yourself lacking in motivation, just take action. Even πŸ–πŸΌminutes can make a difference. You're not alone in this battle. Today I want to give a shout out to my amazing client, Debbie! β€’ This may look like a very simple move but the backstory behind getting to this point is nothing short of amazing. When Debbie first started working with me, there were a few challenges we needed to work through first. β€’ One of those challenges was the fact that she suffered a concussion awhile back from a car accident. And while she has recovered from it, her brain processes instruction differently. Don't get me wrong, she's sharp as a tack and very quick with her witty humor. β€’ But when we work together, we take things step by step especially when it comes to a technical move like the deadlift. You need to know how to hinge not squat, keep your core and lats engaged, back neutral, arms straight, and shoulders down. That's a lot! β€’ Through this process, I have learned (yes coaches can learn from their clients) that I cannot list all of these cues at once and she has learned to be very patient with her progress. β€’ We worked through lots of variations, cueing techniques, etc learning what worked for her and what didn't until we landed on the kettlebell variation you see here. We also shortened the range of motion (how far she needs to move the kettlebell from point A to B) which made it easier for her to focus on form more. β€’ Today, Debbie looks forward to deadlifts with confidence instead of frustration. "How do you stay so fit? Your food and workouts must be perfect!" β€’ A true statement I heard from someone recently. It took all I had not to respond with a cackle of laughter. β€’ If you know me, you know I'm not perfect at anything. #effperfection I eat "naughty" foods quite frequently and over the last few weeks, my workouts have been hit or miss. In fact, I can count on one hand the number of workouts I've completed in the last month. β€’ But I get the perfectionist mindset. I've lived there myself with the numerous diet and workout plans readily available. β€’ You see trying to follow any diet or workout program perfectly will always lead to failure. You have to do the work BUT you don't have to be perfect at it. In fact, my mantra is eff perfection. This is especially useful when it comes to improving your health. β€’ Instead of aiming for perfection, which fails 100% of the time, ask yourself how you can be just a little bit better today. β€’ For example, wherever you're at right now, let's call that baseline zero. Now ask yourself how you can be a little bit better today, even if that's only 1%. β€’ Could you take the stairs instead of the elevator, park farther away from the entrance, go for a 5 minute walk or get a side salad instead of fries with your burger? β€’ Quit trying to force 100% adherence to something. I came across this today during my morning quiet time:β € β€’β € "During the springtime, all the grass in Southern California turns green, the wildflowers and poppies bloom, and it’s really pretty. But the moment the rains stop, the hills turn brown again. Why? Because the grass has no roots. It can’t go down deep enough to get water from the springs that are deep beneath the ground."β € β€’β € "When there are no roots, when a plant is in shallow soil, it may initially sprout and look good, but it doesn’t last. The plants wither quickly because they don’t have roots."β € β€’β € This had me thinking about how we approach our health. You see all the 30 day, 6, 8, 12 week programs we buy are very much like the California grass.β € β€’β € Sure they are great to get us started but do they build roots? Do they provide the permanent solution you need? Do they teach you how to build habits that last longer than the program? Do they build roots? β€’ I would argue they don't. They're appealing because we want quick, easy, and something that has a start and end date. We don't want to invest long term (build roots). β€’ You see health and fitness isn't a one and done option. It's forever. If you keep buying into temporary solutions, you will continue to shine temporarily and then wither like the grass without roots. β€’ Instead take the time to dig your heels in. Develop the roots (good habits) you need so that your health and fitness don't wither with the seasons but flourish for many years. β€’ Are you ready to develop roots? Hammer curls are a simple move that can help build strength in your arms and get you on your way to looking like Linda Hamilton, my twin sister. πŸ˜‰ β€’ -Start with your back straight and your core engaged. -Keep your elbows close to your torso and your upper arms stationary. -Exhale and contract your biceps and bring the weights up by your shoulders. -Lower arms and repeat. -Be sure not to rock back and forth using momentum to bring your arms up. Today's Destiny workout from @meteffect: β€’ 10 Deadlift (1xBW) 10 DB bent over flys (30/15) 10 KB swings (53/35) - I used 53 πŸ’ͺ🏼 β€’ 20 minute AMRAP, resting as needed β€’ Also be sure to check yourself out as much as possible in the mirror, you know, for form. Then proceed to die afterwards. ☠️😹😬😩🀣😷 β€’ These are so different than my usual strength workouts but it's good to switch things up every now and then. I also like being done in 20 minutes. You don't need more to obtain the physique you're after. Returning to my roots with the new #met10 program from @jadeteta. It was the @meteffect rest based training workouts that brought me out of the more is better workout philosophy a few years back. #forevergrateful β€’ On today's agenda, a 20 minute up chain of pull-ups, push-ups, sit-ups, and squats. (Which one of these is not like the other?πŸ˜‚) β€’ And that was only part 2 of the workout. I skipped part 1 simply because I would've died and also because it was optional. 😜 #howdoyoulikemenow β€’ I did have to substitute band assisted pull-ups for regular and eventually did bent over rows as my arms were toast. β€’ This totally kicked my butt in just 20 minutes. More isn't better. Better is better. This is me trying to rest. If I'm being honest with you, I struggle BIG TIME with doing nothing. I'm a get it done gal. I never feel caught up, so I'm always working. β€’ The last few weeks I've literally worked 7 days a week. I have not taken any time for myself or my family. I've been grumpy, stressed out, and not pleasant to be around. β€’ I think it's common for women to do this. We fall into this trap of always doing because in our minds there is always something to be done. We run on empty most of the time. β€’ Ladies we don't need to do it all or be all to everyone. Deadlift day!! πŸ™ŒπŸΌ Usually I'm a mixed grip gal but caught @dsomerset1's blog on deadlift grips (look it up right meow) during my warm up and decided to switch things up. β€’ I tried overhand and hook grip today. I think my tiny hands might not work for hook grip but I'll try again. Overhand felt much better than mixed much to my surprise. I will have to decrease weight and work on grip strength a bit. β€’ Don't stay stuck in a pattern. Learn new ways of doing things. You just might find something better. β€’ P.S. I used to think I needed to workout 5-6 days per week to meet my goals but that always left me feeling worn out.
