My family is very thankful we live so close to the trails that run along the American River. It’s a quick escape to do that favorite pastime of tossing rocks in the water. I could do without the rattlesnake that I almost stepped on though 😳🐍 Are you getting out more in nature too?

Monday mornings feel a lot different these days. I am liking not having to rush around to leave the house. Maybe the upside to this is learning to slow life down a little. Of course, that doesn’t guarantee that my kids will slow down at all. Instead, they can bouncing in at 6am🤪 We filled our extra time this morning playing board games which I know wouldn’t happen during the “old normal” mornings. What is something you are liking about the new normal? More time sleeping? If your room doesn’t look this nice, sign up for a brainstorming session and we will fix it up in no time 😉 📸@katalves

Does your kitchen make you happy? There are so many options and upgrades available that hiring a designer for your next kitchen remodel really is the wisest choice. This week we talked to kitchen designer @amandafossum and professional organizer @tidyrevival to share their wisdom on getting the most out of your kitchen! Replays are posted to IGTV 📸@katalves

We had a design presentation at @rwarddesign yesterday, and another one coming up this afternoon, and it feels so good to have a chance to talk about pretty things with our clients in these weird times! Feeling so fortunate to have a job these days, let alone one that allows me to be creative. ⠀ Happy Wednesday! I hope your day is full of inspiration and beautiful things. 🤍

I love running a project top to bottom, start to finish. Even little details like grout color can make a huge difference in a room! Its important to have great systems in place on the business side to make these projects a worry-free experience for my clients. RWD has spent a lot of time refining our processes much to our clients’ complete satisfaction! You can catch me on today’s podcast over at @business_of_design, going into detail about how we’ve transitioned seamlessly to working remotely during this pandemic so our projects can keep progressing. 👌

14

Good morning! Don’t forget to take a day or two to rest, even if it feels like you’re doing less than usual lately and don’t need a break. This whole situation can take a lot out of us! Take a nap, watch a movie, lay in the sun...whatever helps you to relax and feel a sense of normalcy. Have a great weekend, everyone! Design: @rwarddesign & team

I’ve found myself being bold in unexpected ways lately. From recording a podcast with my business coach to going live with colleagues on Instagram. I am liking the challenge of stepping outside of my comfort zone! How are you being bold these days?

2

When I introduce the idea of wallpaper, many people visibly cringe. That’s when I know they aren’t thinking what I’m thinking. When I say wallpaper I mean this awesome pattern that brings so much color and interest to this bathroom. Are you brave enough to go for wallpaper?

18

This dining room shows a great example of softly layering pattern and color by mixing a solid fabric with a floral and more organic geometric. Did you catch our story this weekend about mixing patterns? It’s not hard if you know how to do it well. Catch our highlights for details on the right way to do it!

This spring weather has me itching to get out and do some wine tasting 🍷 There is something so serene about walking through the estates that makes you want to stay a while. Where are you dreaming about going this spring? 🌷

6

Did you know that a fireplace refresh is one of the most common requests when we remodel a home? I suppose it has to do with it typically sharing the focal point of a family room, as nowadays the TV is almost always stacked above a gas insert. Focal points definitely make (or break!) a statement in a room and can drive the whole design vibe. Is yours in need of a refresh?

3

This monday morning is filled with laying out samples for yet another presentation, getting it all labeled and ready for delivery to the clients. This virtual design is working y’all! So grateful for projects that are able to continue to move forward 🙌

4

We are staying on the positivity train and sharing our thoughts in our latest blog post. Go check it out and be encouraged! Have a wonderful Easter weekend! 💗✝️

Happy Wednesday! I don’t know about you but I am choosing to keep my chin up about this pandemic. I’m focusing on health, family, and spending a lot of time working on innovation in my business to adapt to our “new normal.” How are you keeping your chin up? Let me know in the comments 👇😊

Sometimes it just takes a few accessories to completely refresh your space. Throw pillows and lamps are the perfect items to swap out to make a difference without having to break the bank! Not sure what color pillows to buy? Check out our stories today as our Senior Designer explains the color wheel! 🌈 📸: @katalves

Looking back to simpler, sunnier times. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ P.S. If you watched my Saturday Style stories, can you name the color scheme in this @rwarddesign project? 👇🏻

While I can’t come to your house with all my beautiful samples and finishes, I can still present to you through the computer. Next week we have two HUGE client presentation and we’ve gone to every length to pull together a comprehensive presentation to show our clients virtually, to be followed by a delivery is samples to their door. We got this! 💪

One thing I’ve noticed with having kids, let alone around all the time, is that I have to be flexible. We are all adapting to the shelter-in-place in our own way. Getting off routine is fun in some ways, but harder in a lot of other ways. I love that my kiddos want to “help” get things done but I have to also be ok with the task taking a lot longer to execute. Our painting project in our Master Bedroom has turned into a 2 weekend project. Pre-kids we would have knocked it out in a day! Oh well... blessed are the flexible 😆 #shelterinplacetruth

How is this Monday going for you? It is such a different landscape from just 2 weeks ago. Each day, more and more Americans are learning to manage working at home. RWD has made the transition very efficiently and are sympathetic to those now facing being trapped at home! To address this, we developed virtual design consultations, specifically for this shelter in place situation. A well designed home office and home will maximize productivity and mental health. Need a quick fix? Download our 10 Tips you can try today to refresh your home. Link in bio!

So how has this week treated you? Has remote working and cancelled social events made your life more productive or are you getting the itch to travel? Where would you like to be stranded for a week. I’m pretty sure San Diego is calling me back 🌞

6

Ooh what an inviting corner! As you are spending more time at home with social distancing, if you aren’t drawn to corners of your home like this one, maybe it’s time to give us a call to help you love spending time at home! We created some new virtual design packages just for you! 📷: @katalves

4

I definitely have been the middle man in some clients’ relationships, bringing compromise and reminding each partner what is essential when it comes to design decisions. Maybe they should add mediation courses as requirements to being a certified interior designer 🤔😂

2

This is me pondering what the heck I’m going to do now that my daughter’s school is shut down for a month 😳 How is this corona virus effecting your lives?😷

13

Would you like your home office to look this cool!? How many of you work from home? It is a huge rising trend in general, let along people being quarantined for COVID-19. 😷Having a bright room to work in may be just what the doctor ordered. I mean, cuts down on the stress of commute too! 😄

2

How fun is this colorful guest room we just completed at last week’s installation? 💙💚🧡 I think is has a nice balance of color and relaxation. I am ready to take a nap there right now because Daylight Savings is not fun 😴

3

Some things I just have to accept are out of my control, like having a good hair day on a windy day (shown here) or my daughter coming down with a fever, like this morning. 🤒 Luckily, my awesome team stepped up without skipping a beat to take care of my scheduled color consultation this morning. 👊 Here’s to hoping my weekend gets better so I can get after it next week! With two new contracts signed this week, there is little room for being sick! 😳😅

9

Today’s @rwarddesign install was packed with color! A lot of our clients prefer more neutral palettes, but when we get a client who asks for color, we really like to DELIVER. These gorgeous velvet swivel chairs and vibrant rug are by far some of my favorite pieces in the house. 😍 (Check my stories for a close-up of the equally beautiful, hand-carved coffee table!)

5

Even if a window has a shade, I usually like to still dress it up with some drapery panels in the bedroom. It visually softens the room, provides more light blockage-critical for a good night sleep, and also helps with sound absorption. For this bachelor’s master bedroom, I chose a beautiful plaid which gives just the right amount of visual interest.💙

3

One of my pet peeves is a shower head that has not been installed high enough. I’m an average height and have been in showers where I have to duck a little to get my hair washed. I can’t imagine what a 6’-4” guy would feel like. So, some flexibility using the shower head shown or even a slide bar is a little luxury I find necessary. 🚿 📷@katalves

21

I worked out of my home for about 10 years before getting a studio space. I loved the convenience but there were also several drawbacks. The studio has more than exceeded my expectations. My employees can work there without feeling weird about being in my home and clients have a professional and fun place to visit. I actually love commuting so I have a chance to catch up on podcasts. Have you stopped by our studio lately? In true designer fashion, we have revamped it several times already in the past 18 months we’ve had it 😆 📷: @francisco_chavira

27

This past project from several years ago is one of our most liked! I’m not sure if it’s the stormy blues or the modern focal fireplace or the inviting seating arrangement. What is your favorite thing about this photo? 💙🤍🖤 📷: @katalves

7

How would you like to start your Monday in a bathroom with this tile? We just received a sample from one of our favorite tile suppliers @tilebar and can’t wait to work it into the project we are currently designing! 🤍 Isn’t it gorgeous?!

2

Today I am taking quick girls getaway for a final 40th birthday celebration in San Diego. The Hotel Del Coronado is full of fun history (Some Like It Hot, anyone?) and beautiful architectural details.🧡

9

Have you ever noticed how fresh flowers always bring life to a room? I think everyone should leave a little room in their grocery budget for a weekly rotation of fresh florals, even if it’s just a $5 bouquet from Trader Joe’s. If my kids go shopping with me, they usually take on the task of picking out the bouquet. Not only does it look lovely but smells great and a touch of nature always brings peace to the spirit. 🌸 🌺 ✌️ 📷:@katalves

3

This probably one of the best ways to ease into 40. So grateful to be spending my birthday in this beautiful place with the man I love 💕

11

Be Mine? 💘 Valentine’s Day, as I was explaining to my daughter, is about telling your friends and family how much you love having them in your life. Today, we wish YOU a happy Valentine’s Day and are so glad you are here following our design adventure’s ❤️

1

This bathroom is starting to show progress! Now the fun part starts where the finishes and cabinets get installed. We just set our installation date for this master suite, so I am starting to get excited to see it all come together!! 🎉

1

No truer words to describe the design process. Great things don’t happen overnight. We make sure we give each design plenty of time to develop and execute to achieve the best results and client satisfaction!

6

When it comes to tile design, I love to see what new and creative combination I can do for each project. There are a handful of favorite field tiles I love but for accent tiles, it’s fun to do something new each time. Luckily my tile vendors give me plenty of innovative designs and customizing options!

7

Looking back through photos and was re-inspired by this photo I took of the tablescape at the Christopher Kennedy Showhouse in Turlock last year. The color palette is dreamy 🤍💛

1

It was so inspiring to attend the artist reception for @cyberwhit last night. I bought a piece from her collection last year for the studio that really resonated with me. I always ask clients their preference to own original art or reproductions. There is something to owning a piece that the artist personally spent hours perfecting and then find the perfect spot to give it a home. At home, our resident artist is my daughter and she is quite prolific and love to display her art on all walls😊 Do you have an original art collection?

1

So...my birthday is coming up. Does anyone want to get me one of these for a present? 😆 I have a feeling I’m gonna need it 🍷Oh and I will also need a new cabinet to put it in.... and might as well replace my kitchen at that point.... #turning40soon

7

Our office has a new “Frankenstein” sofa from one of our favorite custom upholstery vendors. We ordered it with a variety of cushion types so the clients have an opportunity to try out the comfort and quality of the product before we order it. Trying it out with the clients kind of feels like they are Goldilocks trying out the three bear’s beds 😆

4

I try to look for an opportunity to do custom in every project. I didn’t set out to make custom metal headboards on this project but through a series of brainstorming sessions and vendor quotes, we were really happy with where we landed! 🙌🏼 @wildwood.customs

1

We love when our clients show us their own inspiration photos at the initial consultation. This one here is one a client recently showed saying, “I love everything about this” but then we really dug into it to clarify that statement. What a designer sees when looking at a photo is not always what the client sees, and more often than not it is the overall vibe of a space the client loves rather than specific pieces.

5

When designing a living space, I’m always thinking about where the best spot is to place a drink if I was using the space. It doesn’t always mean the coffee table but more often is a side table, a drink table or even a console placed behind the sofa. I try to avoid always having to lean forward to retrieve a drink. 🥂Just seems like a better way to enjoy the space. What do you think?

6

I loved checking out the new colors from our favorite solid surface vendors at KBIS. This new 4mm Dekton means some great things can happen vertically now, like clad showers and fireplaces 🙌 So inspired by new possibilities!

1

Since you all went a little crazy over these chairs when I posted them in my story, I am bringing them back so you can take a nice long look at their beauty. These are definitely working their way into a project we are currently designing🖤

3

One of the things I like the best about the industry events I go to are the connections I make while I’m there. This last trip was non-stop between KBIS, BOD conference and Las Vegas Market, meeting trade reps and other talented designers. I thoroughly enjoyed the evening I spent with this fabulous design team from Palm Springs. I can’t wait to go see their amazing work in person this fall! 🧡

3

Headed into the weekend like a boss! An excellent presentation today has us on top of the world. Our clients really loved everything and were so pleased how we developed a personal and curated look for their forever home. 💕💕 📷 @katalves

3

Floor plans printed, samples displayed, paint colors pulled. ✔️ We have everything laid out for our huge client presentation tomorrow. We are itching to show our clients what we have been pouring over for the last 8 weeks to get a design that will be perfect for their home. We actually had to take over “mega-desk”, as I like to call Leah and Lilly’s desks which are joined together in our office. This may be our largest presentation to date! Can you feel our excitement? Let’s do this! 🙌

5

I was just at Las Vegas market sourcing new items for my clients. One of my favorite stops is at my bedding collection vendor, Eastern Accents, who can pretty much accommodate any style I need for my clients. The amount of detail that can go into a bedding ensemble is mind-boggling. Having a great source and relationship with the vendor definitely helps with that process,....and the results are always above my expectations👌 📷: @easternaccents

3

As you probably know by now, Classic Blue is the Pantone color of the year. Thermador is now offering their range knobs in blue and had a beautiful display at KBIS in a blue cabinet kitchen to show this off! The largest trend I found at KBIS which keeps growing bigger each year, is smart kitchens and appliances and fixtures. Google and Alexa can integrate with almost any part of the house now, it can start your bath or shower for you, set the oven temp and remind you to buy eggs! Do you want your home THAT smart?

16

I’ve got my walking boots on and am ready to run around the Las Vegas market today to see what’s new and interesting in the furniture and accessory world. Gonna “kick the tires” on a few pieces we’ve selected for clients and do “the bum test” on a few chairs we’ve had our eye on. I’ll keep you posted in the stories on the treasures I find!

3

This is my “getting things done” face. This weekend I am learning all I can at the @business_of_design conference to kick start this year for my business. Most designers don’t also have business degrees and find out there is so much to know to actually run a successful business. Fortunately, I’m a true entrepreneur at heart and actually like learning all the business😊

11

Our client’s college-age daughter asked for a bohemian inspired room and we delivered! She is over the moon about our ability to capture her dream room. Happy client = happy designers! Have a good Friday everyone🤗

1

I love a dramatic powder room! These small but mighty spaces are the perfect place in your home to push the envelope with design ideas. I tend to pull out the deeper colors, wilder wallpapers and statement tile for these spaces. Still loving the dark green we chose for this powder at our mode home project. 🌿 📷: @katalves

1

Have you been to the Crocker lately? 🎨We are so fortunate to have this amazing art museum in Sacramento! I would love to hear your favorite exhibit or event that you caught there👇

3

Hey friends 🤗 today’s #tuesdaytip is about the power of a good piece of art! If you have a drab bit of wall or a little nook with no character, add some art that inspires you and wah-la, it is now your favorite moment to walk by! 📷: @katalves

3

Weekends are for hanging out. My favorite ones have a good balance of activity and down time... and actually a little bit of chores so Monday is easier to handle. 😆I hope you are having some fun hangouts of your own this weekend!

9

I had always been told by mentors to order CFAs (cutting for approval) from the fabric supplier before sending it to the workroom to upholster, or make drapery or pillows. Since this step typically adds a week or more to the process, I used to skip this step, assuming the right fabric would always get where it needs to go. 🤞After hearing too many horror stories, which cost the designer thousands to have the items remade due to wrong fabric being sent, I now have added this check to my procedures. Just last week we had a CFA show up with the right name on it but it was the wrong fabric! So glad I have added this extra step to my process!

7

One of the first things I will notice when I first walk into a client’s space is how the functionality and feel of the space impacts me. One of the benefits of having us step into a space is that we can see obvious problems, which might be difficult to see if you have been in your home for a while. This space shown originally had a door where the window is and a dining table where the coffee table is currently placed. It wasn’t an easy fix to flip flop the dining/living and the window and doors but it was definitely the right move, and now the improvement in the functionality of the home is night and day. 📷: @katalves

7

Hey Sacramento! We want to hear from you! What are your favorite design styles right now? We are still loving this 80’s glam look we did over at @millatbroadway. Let us know what styles you are adding to your inspiration boards 👇 (📷: @katalves)

5

Genius! We are having a mad sale on the Christmas items we used at the @sh_hometour this year. So much better than me trying to store it somewhere 😂 We have already sold a lot thanks to you, our awesome followers! We will continue to post available items on our stories so go check it out!

1

This Monday inspiration photo comes from the fabulous @puresaltinteriors 🖤I am loving the non-white painted cabinets that are still in a light creamy neutral color. (Anyone else a smidge tired of white cabinets? 😬🙋‍♀️) I am also really into the resurgence of the strait-stacked 4x4 tile, but now in the coolest way possible! They resemble historical European tile work, not the 4x4 ceramics if the 80’s with the giant grout lines🤦‍♀️. Do you find this refreshing as well?

11

I love this “California” installation at The California Exposition Fairgrounds in Sacramento because it always reminds me of California Adventure at Disneyland where it was originally installed. ☀️💕While we did a quick visit to CalExpo today, I assured my kids “when in doubt, always ride a golden bear!” Am I right? 🐻 Even my daughter’s favorite stuffed Unicorn got a ride 🦄 😂

5

We are working on some gorgeous bathroom remodels right now! My favorite is when we can reconfigure a bathroom to maximize efficiency and beauty. We changed the entrance to one bathroom so it framed a beautiful freestanding tub. Can’t wait to show you the results!

3

Ooh! Here is a fun throwback to one of the few times we used shiplap for our client’s office. It added some needed interest to the space without cluttering it. Are you tired of shiplap yet, or is it timeless? Let me know! 👇 Full before and after story is on the blog!

Goal setting is so vital to getting things done in life. I’m not talking about New Year’s resolutions. Let’s be honest: most of the time they are more like New Year’s good intentions that just never happen. To reach goals I set for myself, I have to map out the path to get there, step by step and then take it one intentional step at a time. My goal for this year is to grow my business in non-traditional ways. I feel like the marketplace is always changing and I want to make sure my design business stays relevant. What are you goals this year? Writing them below will help make them a reality!👇
