The largest parrot used to be the Kakapo but yesterday that all changed when a new paper was published describing the remains of an even bigger parrot located in New Zealand. This parrot is known as Heracles inexpectatus, and it was actually first uncovered in 2008 but just recently described as a parrot. This Birds was about one meter tall and weighed about 7 kilograms, way larger than the extent Kakapo. Phylogenetic analyzes place this bird in Strigopoidea or the New Zealand Parrot Clade. Making it closest related to the Kaka, Kakapo, Kea, and extinct Nelepsittacus, making Heracles the second fossil Strigopoid. One species of Kaka is also now extinct and all extent genera are endangered. H. inexpectatus is a very remarkable find, a large divergently lightless parrot that existed before the Kakapo, in fact you can even say this is a result of convergent evolution between the Kakapo and Heracles. #Heracles #heraclesinexpectatus #bird #dinosaur #archosaur #sauropsid #diapsida #reptile #animal #eukaryote #evolution #parrot #psittaciformes #aves #strigopoidea #evolution #paleontology #biology #evolutionarybiology #science #birdsaredinosaurs #largestparrot #flightlessparrot #fossil #newzealand #ornithology

I haven’t done much on Dinosaurs in a while so I’m going talk about a very strange animal. This was a basal Neornithischian Dinosaur known as Kulindadromeus zabaikalicus. The media will sort of tell you that this is a Dinosaur with feathers and scales, but that isn’t entirely true. In fact Kulindadromeus has about 6 different types of integument scattered in different parts of the body, 3 types of filaments and 3 types of scales. There are hexagonal overlapping scales found on the shins and hands of the animal, arched rectangular scales running down the upper portion of the tail, and smaller non-overlapping scales. We then get the three filament types, one being strange bundles (ranging from 6-7 per bundle) of ribbon-like filaments that are longer than the other two filamentary types, they resemble the pseudofeathers of the Archosaur Longisquama. We also have bundles of 6-7 downwards-projecting filaments that actually grow on top of an individual scale-like plate(which isn’t seen in any living organisms), these are known as compound filaments. Lastly we have basic hair-like monofilaments found on the trunk, neck, and head. Now the question is, are these feathers? Well they do have some similarities, there isn’t much, in fact feathers and scales are exclusive of each other and it’s extremely hard to even get birds with scales and feathers in the same place. This is mainly because the feather development will almost always replace the scale development process unless edited in extremely early development. Also take into consideration that these filaments also differ from feathers not just from development but with complexity, the head filaments for example are very basic and not as complex as feathers(which are considered to be the most complex structure in nature). The ribbon and compound filaments also don’t resemble any feathers or even integumentary structures seen in any modern animal. Like the beard of a turkey, these filaments where probably their own thing divergent from feathers. Also keep in mind, the compound and ribbon filaments don’t resemble many species we know of with feathers themselves or filaments in general.

An old battle-worn male Torvosaurus gurneyi. Torvosaurus had really weird proportions. Quite the stocky boi😂 Overall really happy with how it turned out. •••••••••••••••••••

Archosauria • Well lookie what we have here! Our first reptile! Well not really, this is the 25th reptile I've posted here, but this is the first that was not a feather-boi but instead a scaly-boi. We're not going too far from our beloved feather-bois today though. My editor seems to have a bias towards archosaurs, even if she doesn't know what that is, as I have loads of non-fuzzy lizard photos to show. This West African dwarf crocodile may actually be a juvenile, which I have only just figured just now. Yay. • Taken at Whipsnade Zoo, Bedfordshire, England in September 2018. See my DeviantArt gallery for the full-size image. • #animal #animalkingdom #animals #archosaur #croc #crocodile #crocodiles #crocodilian #crocs #nature #reptile #reptiles #reptilia #zoo #zooanimal #zoology #dwarfcrocodile #whipsnadezoo #crocodilians #archosauria #archosaurs #sauropsid #scalyboi #zslwhipsnadezoo #animalphotography #naturephotography #wildlife #wildlifephotography #zoophotography #reptilephotography

EUREKA! Pectodens zhenyuensis is a recently described basal archosauromorph from the Guanling Formation of China, a geological formation dating back to the Early Triassic, some 244 million years ago. Always great to find some new bizarre creature from Triassic, a period of "evolutionary war" between synapsids, which had dominated the Earth during the Permian and Early Triassic, and the rising archosauromorphs. Archosaurs, the group that includes crocodylians and dinosaurs (birds included), won out and became dominant by the end of the Triassic, beginning an age of dinosaur domination on Earth as synapsids (in the form of mammals) took a back seat and most other archosauromorphs died out, along with the ancient parareptiles, another leftover group from the Permian period. #pectodenszhenyuensis #pectodens #archosauromorpha #diapsid #saurian #saurians #sauria #reptilia #tetrapoda #tetrapodomorpha #neodiapsida #tetrapod #tetrapods #newtaxa2017 #tetrapodomorph #reptiliomorpha #amniote #tetrapodomorphs #sauropsida #reptiliomorphs #sauropsid #diapsids #neodiapsid #vertebrata #neodiapsids

Hey, guys! I usually won't post this kind of thing, but today's an exception. These are my pet sauropsids; Lanny and Sheldon. Lanny is an adult female leopard gecko (Eublepharis macularius), and Sheldon is a subadult African spurred tortoise (Centrochelys sulcata). Leopard geckos are found in the dry grasslands and deserts of Pakistan, Afghanistan, Iran, and Northwest India. They are insectivores, eating mainly crickets and mealworms in captivity. African spurred tortoises (also known as sulcata tortoises), on the other hand, hail from the Sahara desert, and are known from Burkina Faso, Chad, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Mali, Mauritania, Nigeria, Senegal, and Sudan. They eat mainly leafy greens.
