|| If you want to downward dog in the swimming pool, downward dog in the swimming pool || If you have time to get some movement into your body and warm it up but don’t have time for a longer practise take a few minutes once warm to simply enjoy some time in downward dog. It’s benefits (as with many yoga poses) are endless. Some of which include stretching the shoulders, hamstrings and calves, calms the brain and all at the same time energises the body making it the perfect posture to start your day and get the blood flowing around your body in the morning. Good morning dear friends and family and happy weekend. Today I’m starting my new Ashtanga Vinyasa yoga class at Stroud Yoga Space studio at 11:45am-1pm. I’m very excited about it and nervous at the same time. I absolutely love my local classes and so grateful to everyone who attends it🙏 I love connecting with the community on a deeper level. Best self? See I’m on this never-ending journey of becoming my best self.... AND That means I’m on a never-ending journey to help others become their best selves in that process. BUT.... Let’s remind ourselves something.... Health isn't a one size fits all thing and it's not going to look the same for everyone. Our health is about as much (or more) mental than it is physical. AND If we’re relying on the results of a diet or workout routine to fix our lack of “happiness”..... Well then there are probably some underlying issues we need to address right? (Some protocol there is messed up..) We need to work on accepting who we are today and finding fulfillment in building a lifestyle focused on health and happiness our way - not on an idea of unrealistic "perfection" that society standards shove down our throats - but what truly brings us health & happiness. Trust me... I KNOW... easier said than done, but our journeys should be focused on getting ourselves on a better road and learning to love ourselves through all the stages. Because lemme tell you, there is NO finish line. Let me repeat that... there is NO finish line. This. Is. Life. And yes it’s hard af! BUT... Guess what!? It CAN be soooooo gawwwd damn beautiful if we let it be. Annnnnd realizing being healthy and adapting better habits SHOULD NOT stress us out. I’ve known Samantha for many years, practicing in Mysore, India together. She is a truly courageous and inspirational human being. Her bravery in the face of a life altering accident has touched the very heart of the Ashtanga community and redefined what it means to practice yoga. . . Thank you @samanthalucasashtanga for sharing your story here and to @livesonima for this post! . . #Repost @livesonima ・・・ #YogaHeals: Samantha Fiona Lucas, @samanthalucasashtanga . . “I stumbled upon Mysore-style Ashtanga yoga 11 years ago while going through a divorce and suffering from a deep depression. Though I had been practicing yoga already for a decade, this practice [in particular] resonated with me deeply. I soon made my first pilgrimage to Mysore to practice with Sri K. Pattabbi Jois and now Paramaguru Sharath Jois. Immediately, my depression started to lift and my thoughts about dying subsided. I kept practicing. . . Fast forward to June 2016, I was in a motorcycle accident and lost my right leg below the knee. In the hospital, I didn’t know if I would ever do another downward facing dog again. However, day two after the accident, I started to go through primary series in bed. I did what I could, breathing and moving what I could. I found I was able do so much more then my brain thought. If I didn’t do my practice, then I was a complete mess, emotionally and physically. The pain was too much to bear without practice. I continued to do what I could do. There were some very dark times. The depression crept in because a life-altering trauma takes time to process. I’m still processing, three years later, but the security of the practice gets me through. I am so lucky to have it as such a shining light that picks me up over and over again. I keep practicing! . . Samantha is a kpjayi authorized teacher who practices in NYC at Brooklyn Yoga Club with Eddie Stern. She teaches at her home studio in Upstate New York, in Sharon CT at The Studio and is again starting to give motivational talks around the US.

Day 1️⃣3️⃣ #SalambaSarvangasanaI or #ShoulderStand the queen of all asanas. Generally students start by hating this pose, then to loving it as you start understanding it. The opposite of Sirsasana, Sarvangasana requires a soft outer body but strong inner body. Food for thought ;) Here are the props we recommend to use in this pose, alongside some alignment cues: · 🔺 *Must*: Use 4 (or more) folded blankets. · ✔️Here at The Practice we are very very particular about how the blankets are folded (to the extent where you may think our teachers are crazy). · ✔️Make sure the blankets are properly stacked on top of each other - as another restorative pose, we recommend holding this pose for 5 minutes plus - a general rule of thumb is that you hold this pose twice the time you would hold sirsasana (yes we do not always follow this rule, but the length of hold should be longer). ✔️The cervical spine (neck) is not designed to bend at 90 degrees; and therefore we use blankets to elevate the shoulders so the neck has more leeway. · ✔️The back of the head rests on the floor. · 🔺Strap - Use a strap right above the elbows to keep the elbows just-wider that shoulder width apart. · ✔️As the hands hold the back, you keep working the hands down until the hands are at the armpits (eventually!). · ✔️Thumbs wrap around the sides of the torso and the remaining fingers face one another towards the spine. Eventually the tailbone sits on top of the spine. 🔺5. Let the neck muscles relax. Shoulders are on the blanket, head on the floor, and the neck is free; it doesn't touch anything and there's a natural soft arc to the neck flowing from the shoulders to the back of the head.Work to hold the pose for 5 minutes, then 10, 20minutes, even. at The Practice Studio

Being favourite poses does not mean that I can do them. We often practice vrschikasana I to a chair, stage or wall working the feet slowly closer to the head. Achieving the final pose has never been the point. There are two things I always repeat in my classes #1 always come back to the breath it will show you where you are and guide you to where you need to be. #2 self practice get on the mat at home 5 mins 1 hour it doesn’t matter just make sometime and space for it in your life. I have been working every night this week and today I got to stretch and I noticed where my body was holding tension and how good it felt to release and move into those spaces x I invite you to hit your mat today and trust that there is a teacher inside of you, move intuitively and keep coming back to the breath. I normally do my yoga in the morning but i had a lot to do this morming and i skipped it. Big mistake!!! I waited til this afternoon and I feel great now but felt like i dragged ass all day!! . . 20 minutes sped up to fit into 1. So like, Super speedy. It’s amazing how much better I feel when I fit some type of movement or workout into my day. I’m still coughing, but not nearly as much and my body is so thankful to be moving again. Maybe you’ll also notice how often I hold my belly-that’s because I’m still in awe that God gave me a baby to grow INSIDE my body. {you’ll also maybe see me poking my belly once that’s because he started kicking me and I have to remind him that “hey. I feel that”}. If you think my sequencing is bad or weird or sucks, it’s because I basically have no idea what I’m doing, I haven’t been to a class in what feels like forever, and I’m just moving and doing things as they come to me. I’m also kind of compiling things I’ve done during different prenatal yoga videos. It may not look like much, but I was still sweating when I finished. . Mellow Fridays 🤗 Nothing like finalising the week with some soothing self love. Especially when my body and energy feel depleted after too much doing, I choose to switch into the pause, the now and being to recharge. Restorative yoga and inversions are a fantastic way to invigorate while relaxing, balancing the energies and in a figurative way, an opportunity to observe your reality from a different perspective. Also a good chance to find a use to my hubby’s books - as they create leverage towards the floor maintaining a 90 degree levelled hips with a neutral spine. Day 21 of #YogaFeels is apparently called #UrdhvaPrasaritaEkaPadasana in Sanskrit which is #standingsplits - and I’m always a bit apprehensive when those come up. Today I tried to take Carmen’s instructions to heart, working on the pose, concentrating on the effort and, well, you can’t force that, but reminding myself that I could feel accomplishment for that effort, no matter what the peak pose looked like 🙏. . . Keeping in mind that I realized for the first time that Carmen’s upper body is next to her standing leg instead of on top of it - which changes how easily you can bend deeper in my opinion - I actually felt accomplished today! 🤗 And not that much because of what my splits look like, but that both sides look fairly equal 🎉. ✨// PRIORITISE YOU // ✨ . This week I have not felt myself. I’ve had 0 energy, yet felt restless at the same time. I’ve been forgetful, irritable & just little bit chaotic. I was thinking last night. WHAT IS WRONG WITH ME! And then I realised... I’m not taking care of myself as I need to. Ive always slept well, always gone to bed early, slept through the night and woke up nice & early. - yet lately I’ve been having late nights, sitting on my phone SCROLLING until I go to sleep😣. As well as this; I’ve been busier, so I haven’t been cooking like I usually would. This means quick snacks instead of a making a proper dinner. Therefore not getting the nutrition in that I need. I’ve been unorganised, lazy and just not giving myself the downtime and care I need to. So TODAY this changes. Time to get organised! No phone in my bedroom, meal prep when I need to and start to practice what I preach again! . So many of us are GIVERS, but how can we give our best to others if we don’t give to ourselves? So here’s a reminder - make yourself a priority, give yourself the care, love and time that most of us so willingly give to others..🙏🏽 Happy Friday everyone.❤️ at High Wycombe, Buckinghamshire

Most people wind down for the weekend, but over here I’m just getting started. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I’m not sure why but my weekends are so much more productive in the gym than during the week. I usually take my rest days during the week because I can’t spend more time in the gym on Saturdays and Sunday’s. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Some tips to make your weekends MORE productive. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 1️⃣ go to the gym early! If I don’t make it to the gym by noon on Saturday I’m probably not going. 😂 most gyms have fitness classes scheduled on Saturday mornings so I always try to make it to yoga then lift afterwards. 2️⃣ Invite a friend. Work schedules can get in the way of going to the gym together during the week; weekends are a great time to make a gym girl-date happen. 3️⃣ Save your favorite lift days for the weekend. I get extra jazzed when I get to do shoulders on a Sunday morning. Nothing better. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Are you a weekend warrior too?
