I always knew that the Grand Canyon was the biggest in the world, but would have struggled guessing the second. Sure enough, it’s this one- Africa’s biggest, Fish River Canyon. The canyon itself has formed erosion and tectonic plate movement and is a tick over 500 million years young. 🇳🇦 . . . . . . . #Namibia #sharemynamibia #thisisnamibia #Namibia_africa #africanamazing #onlyafrica #cityph0t0graphy #RGphoto #escapesnaps #travellerau #getlostnow #cntraveler #Yourshotphotographer #iamatraveler #TLpicks #livetravelchannel #letsgoeverywhere #awesome_earthpix #justgoshoot #theGlobeWanderer #culturetrip #worlderlust #wonderful_places #beautifuldestinations #passportready #travelwithme #travelingtheworld #travelphotography #theDriftr at Fish River Canyon

The awesome roadside stops in Namibia 💕 . Before heading to Namibia, we’d read that this was one of the most sparsely populated countries on earth. In fact, ‘Namib’ means ‘vast place’. On our first long driving day in Namibia, we were lucky if we passed one car every hour. Whilst we were prepared for this isolation, what we didn’t know in advance is that there are a few amazing roadside stops as we made our way up to the desert highlights. This stop featured rusted old cars, peculiar trees (which we learnt is called a Quiver tree) and a bar with hundreds of number plates from around the world. We enjoyed spotting some from back home in Australia. A welcome respite as we continued our journey north along the dusty roads! 🇳🇦 . #ourpassionfortravel . . . . . #nomadtours #namibia #sharemynamibia #thisisnamibia #lonelyplanet #bbctravel #livetravelchannel #culturetrip #letsgoeverywhere #passionpassport #escapesnaps #tlpicks #cntraveler #travellingthroughtheworld #iamatraveler #openmyworld #hello_worldpics #thetraveltag #theglobewanderer #ig_travel #getlostnow #speechlessplaces #goneAWOL #travelawesome #theconstantlycurious #tntraveler #ichosetowander #thetravellingnomads #travelbug at Namibia

The founding father of Nambia Sam Nujoma Samuel Shafiishuna Daniel Nujoma, born 12 May 1929 is a Namibian revolutionary, anti-apartheid activist and politician who served three terms as the first President of Namibia, from 1990 to 2005. Nujoma was a founding member and the first president of the South West Africa People's Organization (SWAPO) in 1960. He played an important role as leader of the national liberation movement in campaigning for Namibia's independence from South African rule. He established the People's Liberation Army of Namibia(PLAN) in 1962 and launched a guerrilla war against the apartheid government of South Africa in 1966, beginning after the United Nations withdrew the mandate for South Africa to govern the territory. Nujoma led SWAPO during the lengthy Namibian War of Independence, which lasted from 1966 to 1989.Nujoma became involved in anti-colonial politics during the 1950s. In 1959, he cofounded and served as the first president of the Ovamboland People's Organization (OPO), a nationalist organization advocating an independent Namibia. In December 1958 he was an organizer of the Old Locationresistance and was arrested and deported to Ovamboland. In 1960 he escaped and went into exile in Tanzania where he was welcomed by Julius Nyerere. Namibia finally achieved independence in 1990, holding its first democratic elections. SWAPO won a majority and Nujoma was elected as the country's first President on 21 March 1990. He was re-elected for two more terms in 1994 and 1999. Nujoma retired as SWAPO party president on 30 November. #swapo #history foundingfather #sharemynamibia #blackhistorymonth

After Cape Town, we headed north to Namibia. We changed things up for this part of our trip. We were a little bit travel fatigued (yes, we hear the groans as you head to/from work!) and thought it’d be a nice change to jump on a tour and leave the planning to someone else. And there aren’t many better places to hand over the reins to someone else than Africa. We jumped on a @nomadadventuretours trip for a week. Our group was a typical United Nations turn out with Australian, British, Canadian, American, Dutch, German, Brazilian and Swedish representation. This to go with our wonderful group leader Mama G from Zimbabwe, our skilled driver Jabu, also from Zim and our South African camp assistant, Hamish. Jeff in particular has been a little infatuated with this country. Visiting only served that infatuation to be fair! Whilst some of the days contained long bumpy roads, it’s these types of experiences that we love the most. We’ll share some of our favourite memories over the coming days of the beautiful, vast land of Namibia. 🇳🇦🇳🇦🇳🇦 . #ourpassionfortravel . . . . . #nomadtours #namibia #sharemynamibia #thisisnamibia #lonelyplanet #bbctravel #livetravelchannel #culturetrip #letsgoeverywhere #passionpassport #escapesnaps #tlpicks #cntraveler #travellingthroughtheworld #iamatraveler #openmyworld #hello_worldpics #thetraveltag #theglobewanderer #ig_travel #getlostnow #speechlessplaces #goneAWOL #travelawesome #theconstantlycurious #tntraveler #ichosetowander #thetravellingnomads #travelbug at Namibia

After Cape Town we headed north for the week to explore parts of Namibia🇳🇦 There were chunks of the day spent over landing. This is one of the better roads (notice the markings and asphalt!). You could drive for long periods without passing anyone. This Sunday we bring you 'Through the diamond hill I & II' by February's StArt Artist of the Month Elisia Nghidishange. This set of cardboard prints shows a figure on a journey. An interesting feature of this artwork is that the figure itself is split across both prints. The figure journeys not only 'Through the diamond Hill' but also through an aesthetic fissure, or break, in the prints' surfaces and visual plane. Each person might find different meanings and symbols when looking at this artwork, often depending on your context and background. For example, looking at it this Sunday it might symbolise how we feel about the often difficult transition from the weekend to the week ahead! 🙈 Feel free to share your thoughts and comments on what you experience when looking at this artwork in the comments below! ⬇️ . Week 2 into The Vanderful Project, Swakopmund Namibia. The children had their first taste and feeling of what surf is all about. They've begun shaping their own boards, but due to the fact we are running the project 2 days a week only... it was necessary for them to experience what it means to catch a wave before their boards are ready! Frankie took the children from The Green House for an introduction to surfing on Pebbles beach. Encouraging feedback came from not only from the children themselves but also the parents and carers! Positive relationships and engagement from families or significant individuals in children's activities; fosters and enhances their confidence, self-esteem, helps them face their fears and offers them a whole range of opportunities and benefits. Thank you to all those who supported and attended the session. Also well done to Silent, for overcoming his fear and the cold Atlantic water and to 'Salty Jackal Backpackers' for providing us the equipment we needed, free of charge! @saltyjackal264 #Namibia #swakopmund #Africa #surf #surfing #surfinglife #ocean #waves #learn #fun #enjoy #surfafrica #surfer #project #vanderfuladventures #vanderful #teachers #teaching #project #volunteer #family #school #dowhatyoulove #share #sharemynamibia #seedsofhope #ngo #happy #beach #project at Swakopmund, Namibia

The Omaanda name is inspired from the word “Omhanda” meaning rhinoceros in Oshiwambo. At Zannier Reserve, rhino tracking offers a great opportunity to learn about the habits and characteristics of this threatened species, the issue of rhino poaching, and the on-going conservation efforts. It seemed like a lot of you really enjoyed the Kolmanskop shot from a couple days ago - so here's another one! This one, and the shot from a couple days ago are both new ones from me. I had a few others from Kolmanskop that I posted up a long time ago, but then I forgot to go back and dig in to my files and work on more. When I visited, I had the place to myself twice. Late in the evening, and then again early in the morning before small groups of tourists started to arrive for the day. Both times were great, this shot was from the morning session. The light bounces around from one room to the next and if you find the right angle, you can see really cool scenes like this where the warm light from outside starts filtering in through various openings and bounces around from one room to the next, flooding into a cold, dimly lit space. Take a look at a doorway / door that's nearby right now. Can you imagine sand piled half way up the walls, doorway, and door? It's a pretty unique scene to take in! The Namibian Dunes 💛 Repost @davegaiz ・・・ It's amazing what you can create with a little bit of sand (ok a lot of sand!) and a little bit of light! Who would like to visit this place and learn about the crazy history associated with it and take some cool photos? I knew as soon as I started going back and looking at wildlife shots and posting them up a little over a week ago that I was going to end up diving back into a lot of my Africa shots and I did! Let's keep the Namibia theme going here with a new shot of mine from Kolmanskop. I really enjoyed exploring this small, desolate, history-rich town in the southern part of Namibia. I would have loved to see this town in action during the height of its existence. There was a lot of ingenuity, struggle, enjoyment & shenanigans that came along with living in relative isolation during a time of economic prosperity from a diamond mining boom. Now all we have left to see is a ghost town being swallowed up by the desert. Windhoek’s TransNamib train station is not only a railway hub, but is also a historical centre | The station also houses the small Trans-Namib Transport Museum, which outlines Namibian transport history, particularly that of the railway. Opened on July 1, 1993, the exhibition consists of a wide range of railway equipment, maps and related items, which date back to German colonial times. Another part of the exhibition is dedicated to Namibian Airways history and Namibian Maritime history. You can also see the crockery and cutlery used in the dining cars of South African Railways in Namibia along with telecommunications and electrical equipment. #sharemynamibia #Namibia #namibianrailway #namibianairways #history #architecture

The Christ Church, this building is a centre point for most people who want to photograph Windhoek. With the relatively newly-built Independence Memorial Museum in the background, the view of the Christuskircheis telling, as it offers a glimpse into Namibia’s German links. Commissioned by The German Lutheran Congregation founded in Windhoek in 1896, it’s believed that plans to build the church were drawn in 1900 by government architect Redecker. The construction of the project, however, was delayed by wars, and only saw completion in 1907. It’s strategically built on top of a hill as a symbol of peace, and it features three bronze bells which bear the inscriptions ‘Ehre sei Gott in der Hohe’ (‘Glory to God in the highest’), ‘Friede auf Erden‘ (‘And on Earth peace’) and ‘Den Menschen ein Wohlgefallen‘ (‘Goodwill towards men’). The church also features a bronze plaque that is inscripted with the names of German soldiers, marines and civilians who died during Nama and Herero uprisings between 1903 and 1907. Church service takes place at 10am on Sundays and are conducted in German. Guided tours can be arranged as the church is a popular tourist attraction. #CHRISTUSKIRCHE #sharemynamibia #mynamibia #worship #architecture at Windhoek, Namibia
