#repost @oxo_studio . “The architecture of Javanese houses is essentially an embodiment of the protection architecture. This opinion seems to be based on information contained in traditional Javanese sources, namely Kawruh Kalang, which states: "Tiyang Sumusup griya punika saged kaupamekaken ngaubing sangandhaping kajeng ageng" meaning "the person entering the house, harbors (shelter) a big tree.” — Prijotomo— . #amvsociety #architizer #architect #bustler #evolomagazine #divisare #architectsjournal #architecturalreview #arcspace #worldarchitects #worldarchitecturenews #archpaper #dieangewandte #iarchitectures #thisiscolossal #thecoolhunter #framemagazine #wallpapermagazine #abitare #shinkenchiku #shotenkenchiku #elcroquis #domus #taschen #behance #phaidon #breezeblockhead #archilovers

Chivvis House⠀ Eliot Noyes, Alan Goldberg⠀ 1978⠀ Photos by @mikebiondophoto ⠀ a+u 19:05⠀ Mid-century Modern Houses in New Canaan⠀ ⠀ The house for Lyn and Arthur Chivvis was the last one Eliot Noyes designed, and it had a particular significance for both owners and architect. Noyes had designed the 1951 Bremer House, where Lyn grew up, and had long been a friend of her family. As the Chivvises began planning to build, Noyes helped them select the secluded property, at the end of a private road near his own house.⠀ ⠀ Many key characteristics of the house reflect those of Noyes House II. It is composed of two flat-roofed wings, of almost equal length – public and private – flanking a central courtyard. Entrance is by way of a large oak door cut into a fieldstone wall. Here the door leads into an enclosed link between the wings, with a glass wall overlooking the courtyard. The living-dining-kitchen wing has window walls running along both sides, while the bedroom wing differs by having a fieldstone wall facing the courtyard, accessed through a single door. Eliot Noyes died while the house was under construction, and Alan Goldberg – then his architectural partner – directed its completion. A few years later Goldberg designed extensions to both of the house’s wings, plus a garage, which faithfully maintained the house’s design character. The private wing gained an additional large bedroom and bath. The public wing was enhanced by a new study, integrated with the living area yet separated by a large stone fireplace that backed up against the existing one.⠀ ⠀ #aumagazine #architectureandurbanism #新建築 #architectureandurbanism #architecture_magazine #architecturemagazine #designmagazine⠀ #architecture #urbanism #shinkenchiku ⠀ #buildinglovers #architecturaldesign #architecturephoto #instaarchitecture#建築 #modernarchitecture #architecturephotography #archdaily #midcenturymodern #midmod #midcenturyhome #midcenturyinterior #midcenturyfurniture #alangoldberg #eliotnoyes

Goldberg House⠀⠀ Alan Goldberg⠀⠀ 1977⠀⠀ Photos by @mikebiondophoto a+u 19:05⠀⠀ Mid-century Modern Houses in New Canaan⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ Architect Alan Goldberg and his family have occupied two distinct, but related houses on the same site for over 50 years. In 1966, when Goldberg joined the office of Eliot Noyes, they purchased a small, efficient house designed by John Johansen in 1952. Goldberg was taken by the minimalist Miesian design of a modern house set in the Connecticut woods.⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ By 1977 the Goldbergs felt a need for more space, and it was becoming clear that the lifespan of some original materials was coming to an end. Their expansion and renovation plan quickly evolved into a new house of Goldberg’s design.⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ Acting as his own general contractor, he totally gutted and rebuilt the house, doubling its size while respecting the spirit of the original Johansen design. The new house has vertical redwood siding painted white and large panes of energy-efficient glass that increase the feeling of spaciousness, and open the house to views of the surrounding steep, wooded site and a pond.⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ #aumagazine #architectureandurbanism #新建築 #architectureandurbanism #architecture_magazine #architecturemagazine #designmagazine⠀⠀ #architecture #urbanism #shinkenchiku ⠀⠀ #buildinglovers #architecturaldesign #architecturephoto #instaarchitecture#建築 #modernarchitecture #architecturephotography #archdaily #midcenturymodern #midmod #midcenturyhome #midcenturyinterior #midcenturyfurniture #alangoldberg

Parson House⠀⠀ Hugh Smallen⠀⠀ 1964⠀⠀ ⠀ Photos by @mikebiondophotos⠀ ⠀⠀ a+u 19:05⠀⠀ Mid-century Modern Houses in New Canaan⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ This house, like Lee House I, occupies a seemingly impossible position atop a massive rock outcrop from which the architect Smallen drew inspiration. It reminded him of “a feeling of seclusion and privacy that one tends to remember from his childhood treehouse.”⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ The house presents a carefully composed front to the approaching visitor. At the center of a large rectangle clad in white-painted vertical boards, four precisely proportioned recesses shelter the entrance and three floor-to-ceiling windows. The second floor is visible as a band of continuous glazing within another recess that extends the whole width of the house.⠀⠀ Like Philip Johnson’s Wiley House, the Parsons House has an “upside-down” plan, with private rooms below, public rooms above. The upper spaces open to a flat area at the top of the rock outcrop through a window wall that extends the full width of the house. An uninterrupted side wall, visible from the road, reveals the house’s distinctive transition from two floors to one. Against the white surfaces of the side walls can be seen exterior steel columns, painted contrasting black, that help to support the house on the rock ledge. Smallen’s design signature was to use natural materials wherever possible.⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ #aumagazine #architectureandurbanism #新建築 #architectureandurbanism #architecture_magazine #architecturemagazine #designmagazine⠀⠀ #architecture #urbanism #shinkenchiku ⠀⠀ #buildinglovers #architecturaldesign #architecturephoto #instaarchitecture#建築 #modernarchitecture #architecturephotography #archdaily #midcenturymodern #midmod #midcenturyhome #midcenturyinterior #midcenturyfurniture #hughsmallen

Celanese House ⠀⠀ Edward Durell Stone⠀⠀ 1957⠀⠀ ⠀ Photos by @mikebiondophoto⠀ ⠀⠀ a+u 19:05⠀⠀ Mid-century Modern Houses in New Canaan⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ The Celanese house was not built for an owner planning to live there, but as an exhibition house to showcase products of the Celanese Corporation of America. The company’s homebuilding products included wallboard, linoleum flooring, adhesives, paints, carpets, and furniture. The sponsors considered only Frank Lloyd Wright and Edward Durell Stone to be their architect, and Stone won the commission.⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ A pioneering American Modernist starting in the 1930s, Stone had by the 1950s adopted an ornamental approach to Modernism that won him prominent civic and institutional commissions. The geometrically patterned screens that had become signature features of his architecture were prominently displayed here. White latticework completely surrounded the house, its two courtyards, and an adjoining garage-playroom structure.⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ An equally prominent distinction of this design was the series of skylight-tipped pyramids rising from the roof of the house and its adjoining garage. For the house itself, these pyramids were laid out in a nine-square grid, and the plan of the interior was carefully coordinated with them. The natural light from these skylights, reflected off pristine white walls, made the interior look especially spacious.⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ #aumagazine #architectureandurbanism #新建築 #architecture_magazine #architecturemagazine #designmagazine⠀⠀ #architecture #urbanism #shinkenchiku ⠀⠀ #buildinglovers #architecturaldesign #architecturephoto #instaarchitecture#建築 #modernarchitecture #architecturephotography #archdaily #midcenturymodern #midmod #midcenturyhome #midcenturyinterior #midcenturyfurniture #edwarddurellstone

Rayward “Tirranna” House⠀⠀ Frank Lloyd Wright⠀⠀ 1955⠀⠀ ⠀ Photos by @mikebiondophoto⠀ ⠀⠀ a+u 19:05⠀⠀ Mid-century Modern Houses in New Canaan⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ Compared to other Modern houses in the town at the time, Tirranna is considerably larger, with a more elaborate program. Wright responded with a design of exceptional geometric and spatial complexity. The house’s major spaces here were shaped by the prominent curves that appear in many of his other late works. The principal living-dining area occupies an arc that curves around a terrace overlooking the Noroton River. In this design, however, the curves collide with boldly rectangular portions of the house that contain more private functions such as the kitchen, bedrooms, and a fireplace-focused alcove off the main living-dining space.⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ A continuous flat roof covers most of the house, with a raised portion providing increased height and clerestory lighting for the large central space. The materials are characteristically Wrightian: bare concrete block walls; natural finished Philippine mahogany for exposed beams, window frames, fascias, and soffits; ceilings of mahogany-surfaced plywood applied in a checkerboard pattern; floors of concrete with Wright’s signature Cherokee red coating scored in regular squares. Much of the seating, shelving, and cabinetry is built-in and of characteristically Wrightian design.⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ #aumagazine #architectureandurbanism #新建築 #architectureandurbanism #architecture_magazine #architecturemagazine #designmagazine⠀⠀ #architecture #urbanism #shinkenchiku ⠀⠀ #buildinglovers #architecturaldesign #architecturephoto #instaarchitecture#建築 #modernarchitecture #architecturephotography #archdaily #midcenturymodern #midmod #midcenturyhome #midcenturyinterior #midcenturyfurniture #franklloydwright #WrightSites

Warner “Bridge” House⠀⠀ John Johansen⠀⠀ 1956 Photos by @mikebiondophoto ⠀⠀ a+u 19:05 Mid-century Modern Houses in New Canaan⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ The first notable feature of this house is that it bridges a substantial stream. When the Warners showed architect Johansen the site they had purchased for their house, he envisioned it bridging the stream and urged them to buy additional property to make that work. So the house he designed is set on five wooded acres, spanning the Rippowam River.⠀⠀ Bridging that stream is the basis for the house’s plan. Johansen placed the more public living-dining portion on the bridge itself, then distributed the supporting private spaces in four square blocks at the corners, producing a plan that is symmetrical about both axes. The rigorous geometrical order he developed recalled the 16th-century country villas of the Italian architect Andrea Palladio.⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ #aumagazine #architectureandurbanism #新建築 #architectureandurbanism #architecture_magazine #architecturemagazine #designmagazine⠀⠀ #architecture #urbanism #shinkenchiku ⠀⠀ #buildinglovers #architecturaldesign #architecturephoto #instaarchitecture#建築 #modernarchitecture #architecturephotography #archdaily #midcenturymodern #midmod #midcenturyhome #midcenturyinterior #midcenturyfurniture #johnjohansen

Lee House I⠀⠀ John Black Lee⠀⠀ 1953⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ a+u 19:05⠀⠀ Mid-century Modern Houses in New Canaan⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ Architect John Black Lee was one of the earliest of several younger architects to join the pioneering Harvard Five living in New Canaan, and he remained there for his entire career. For his first house, he chose one of the most challenging of the sites occupied by the town’s Mid-century Moderns.⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ To support his family’s house at the crest of a rock outcropping, he sank an array of 15 steel pins into the granite. To carry his structure on these pins, he designed a platform framed by five pairs of wood beams, cantilevered somewhat beyond the pins themselves on three sides. Above that platform Lee worked out an unusually rigid post-and-beam wood frame, relying in part on extra-strong joints and in part on bracing inside interior partitions and solid areas of exterior wall. The plan of the interior was, like some of its New Canaan Modern neighbors, an instructive exercise in compact, efficient family accommodations. ⠀⠀ #aumagazine #architectureandurbanism #新建築 #architectureandurbanism #architecture_magazine #architecturemagazine #designmagazine⠀⠀ #architecture #urbanism #shinkenchiku ⠀⠀ #buildinglovers #architecturaldesign #architecturephoto #instaarchitecture#建築 #modernarchitecture #architecturephotography #archdaily #midcenturymodern #midmod #midcenturyhome #midcenturyinterior #midcenturyfurniture #johnblacklee
