Happy #SelfCareSaturday everyone! I think "Be Kind to Yourself" is a message that bears repeating, so I'm gonna do a Self-Care Saturday series here for the next few weeks. So to kick off this #SelfCare party, we have here Trish's infamous "green with a hint of purple that kinda makes it look brown" #SMOOTHIE !! Yes, it's sorta gross-looking. I acknowledge this. But it doesn't taste bad at all. (Pro tip: Throw a ripe #banana in there and you can pretty much cover up any "green" taste that you might not love.) This smoothie has been a regular part of my #SelfCareRoutine for the past month or so. Because I've been making it more of a priority these days to get my #fruits and #veggies in on the DAILY instead of just winging it (because I discovered in the past that that kinda meant... like... well... ZERO fruits and veggies on some days, honestly, which was not exactly the #HealthyEating plan I was aiming for). These #smoothies give me 3 servings of fruits and veg in one fell swoop -- a banana, about a cup of #spinach or #kale or other greens, a cup of #FrozenBlueberries (or any other #FrozenFruit really... but I like #blueberries because they are a relatively #LowSugarFruit versus other choices like mango or pineapple, and the banana already packs a good sugar punch by itself). I also add in a spoonful of #PsylliumHusk #fiber and a scoop of #ProteinPowder for good measure. And no, #Starbucks doesn't make these smoothies, but I sometimes pour them into my leftover #StarbucksCups (as you see in the pic) because it makes cleanup easier. The Trish is not a fan of washing dishes in her tiny #RVkitchen at all, never mind trying to scrub this #LeafyGoodness after it's had a chance to get all crusty and dried up all over one of her cups like some scary swamp monster. (Okay, okay... the Trish is not a fan of washing dishes at all, no matter the location.) P.S. Busy Saturday at Nom Nom HQ so I’m sorting out snacks to keep the kids going. My parents are coming over to have a look around the house we are in the process of buying. Family lunch at home with cake for my Dads Birthday and then off to Pittville Park to meet the super talented Sheryl of @oobaloosphotography for a mini family photo shoot. Them and the kids...I’m staying away from the camera! Off for a play in the park and a cup of tea before the folks head off and I go out to help at PFA event at school. They’re delicious, they’re quick, they’re easy....⠀ .⠀ 🤷🏽‍♀️But are they truly a ‘health’ food 🤷🏽‍♀️⠀ .⠀ I have✌🏼 main issues with smoothies:⠀ .⠀ 1. 💣Blood-Sugar Bombs 💣⠀ - if most of your smoothie is fruit, I’m gonna guess that you have many of the symptoms listed in the pics above. Not only are you missing the fiber you would consume if you ate the whole fruit (that slows sugar absorption) but in addition you’re racking up a huuuuge sugar count if you’re shoving a 🍌, berries, açaí, 2 🍎 and OJ all at once⠀ .⠀ 2. ❄️Frozen food = Frozen Gut❄️⠀ -when something is “frozen” we usually think, cold/solid/stationary/not moving which are the exact words you could use to describe your digestion post-smoothie consumption⠀ .⠀ In Chinese Medicine, we want our guts (and all our insides) warm and active. By dumping the ❄️arctic tundra ❄️ into your blender + belly, you’re recreating a scene from Frozen and soon you’ll start begging your bowels to 🎵”Let It Goooooo”🎵⠀ .⠀ The enzymes in your gut operate within a specific temp range and if there’s too many frozen 🍓, it’ll take a bit for your body to warm it back up to activate those enzymes. This slows digestion and creates fermentation (gas/bloat). In addition, this scenario sends more blood flow from your extremities to your gut (cue cold hands/feet)🥶⠀ .⠀ 😱Many of you may be screaming ‘noooooooo not my smoothies!’ 🤬⠀ . ⠀ Alas! Fear not friends. You can still use smoothies in a pinch as long as you adhere to the guidelines listed above. But let’s keep a few things in mind- this PSL is a short (8oz). When I asked the employee at Starbucks which size is most often ordered she told me Grande (16oz) that’s double the size! Now, put the numbers aside for a minute and only look at the ingredients. The PSL contains added sugars, preservatives, and processed ingredients. The PS contains no added sugars, or preservatives and contains lots of fiber, vitamins, minerals, and protein. These ingredients will not only fuel but nourish your body. It’s easy to get caught up in counting calories but It’s better to be looking at the ingredient labels and looking for added sugars, preservatives, and hydrogenated oils. 5 Days of Smoothie Freezer Packs INGREDIENTS 10 cups spinach or baby kale 2 1/2 bananas 2 1/2 cups blueberries (fresh or frozen) 2 1/2 cups mango (I used frozen) 1 1/4 ripe avocados DIRECTIONS Grab five freezer-safe sealable plastic bags and divide the ingredients between them. Add: 2 cups of greens, 1/2 a banana (sliced), 1/4 cup blueberries, 1/4 cup mango, and 1/4 avocado. Close them up and feel free to write any notes on the bag such as the date or ingredients you want to add later, then place them in the freezer. When you're ready to make your smoothie, empty the contents of the freezer pack into your blender, add the extra ingredients like water or coconut water, almond or soy milk, protein powder, flaxmeal, chia seeds, cinnamon, beans, tofu, or whatever you please.
