(3) 2019 is the 4th year since I first entered a refugee camp in Davao City. So much has changed here but there are still a lot of familiar faces. This is where roughly 1,000 Lumad individuals live. And when the war in the mountains is at its worst, more would flee and seek refuge here. Because not only do the Lumads struggle to get an education, they also struggle to reclaim peace. I cannot count how many children have shared to me what their schools looked like when soldiers would use it as their camp. Combat boots and camouflage uniforms lying next to armchairs, hammocks hanging just outside the classrooms, long firearms lying around. There are rebels in the mountains. And where there are rebels, there are soldiers. Problem is, the soldiers are using the Lumads as human shields. They intentionally build their camps near if not within the Lumad communities and schools so the rebels would think twice before shooting. And when they speak up, the Lumads are harassed and threatened. Which is why they fled to the city, hoping someone would see their struggle and do something about it. Today, there are 7 classrooms in this refugee camp. Teachers have fled too so for now, they’re teaching here. They teach multi-grade, which means two grade levels at once. Imagine teaching first graders and second graders with two sets of lessons at the same time, in one makeshift classroom. There aren’t enough teachers but there are enough students willing to learn. So no matter the struggle, the Lumads choose to continue. To this day, I can only be grateful for all the nonprofit organizations and church organizations that continuously help the Lumads. I can only be grateful for all the publications that allowed me to tell their story. This is a complex issue I do not know how to solve. But I do know that education plays a vital role and the dream of Lumad children to get educated is something worth supporting.

(2) Recently, 54 Lumad schools built by non-government organizations were ordered to shut down because they’re accused of not complying with the curriculum standards of the Department of Education. The schools, which provide a dormitory for students who live far, were also accused of taking the students away from their parents without parental consent. While education is basic human right, in Lumad communities in the Philippines it has become a privilege. Their simple goal to learn how to write, read, and do math has been tainted with politics. Today, some of the Lumad students are back to walking up to 4 hours each day - one way - just to get to the nearest public school. Crossing rivers and creeks, walking barefoot under the scorching heat, stomach oftentimes empty… an everyday cycle as they hold on to hope that being educated will save the lands their ancestors fought so hard for. Maybe it will, maybe it won’t.

Few days ago, Chris Cooper asked a necessary question I think we should also ask ourselves constantly. “If you could help one topic/person/community, what would it be and why?” Obviously, this question is important. But more than that, it’s also the type of question that brings us back to our purpose in life. Reminds us why we’re doing what we’re doing and what we want to do more of. That said, I’m responding in three parts because there’s just so much to unpack. . (1) The Lumads. The indigenous people in the Philippines. My roots. Who have spent their lives protecting nature - their home. But are now considered internally displaced people. Multinational mining companies backed by the government, which is to say backed by armed military, continuously intrude the country’s mountainous regions. Destroying the Lumads’ home. Destroying nature for massive logs and minerals. I guess it’s safe to say the attack against indigenous people is an attack against nature. For years, these companies have taken advantage of the Lumad’s illiteracy - making them sign papers they couldn’t read in exchange for a few cans of sardines. Papers that say they’re willingly giving their lands away. This illiteracy became a window of opportunity for the greedy. Today’s generation of Lumads want change. They worked hard to build their own schools and thanks to church workers and various non-government organizations, schools were built in their far-flung lands. They’ve seen firsthand what the inability to read and write can do to an indigenous community and they want something different, something better for their children. They know education is key not only to protecting the lands of this country but their tribe as well. But not everything comes easy…

I saw this public school student carrying the obvious to school, and as I take this picture, one question constantly reoccured in my head and that is, can it be possible in 2019 that parents will have to provide seats for their own children in LAGOS? I begin to search for the excellence in the state with her enviable IGR. Is the"Lagos Is Working" slogan a mockery of the sensibilities of tax payers and the percieved "woke" nature of residents of Lagos State. @lagosstategovt How far? #Canon #art #exhibition #documentary #nature #Lagos #humans #portraitphotography #socialdocumentary #mynaija #wakawakaphotography #blinkdotla #takeaction #photojournalism #portrait #f4fofficial #africanature #loves_africa #travelafrique #gotoafrica #discoverportrait #thisisafrica #ig_africa #artinprogress #createeveryday #mybarigamypride #f4fofficial

THE FACE OF THE EARTH – We’re delighted to announce the winners from our first theme of this edition, judged by Nick Brandt. • Honorary Mention by Paloma Saint Léger (@palomasaintleger). • She says of it – “'This series was taken on the island of Milos in Greece. I had read about this place with a moonlike scenery and had dreamt of visiting it. I was surprised how well this natural wonder had been preserved from the human flow and even how little people there were around this place. I went and explored beyond the main spot and discovered incredible landscapes and textures. The minimal lines of the scenery and the pale tones of rock against the blue of the sky made me stand there for a while before I could go on with my day.” • Jury’s comment - “Paloma captures an idyllic bathing pool on the Greek island of Milos and it’s the vibrant tones that grab you - the complimentary colors of the deep jade water and sun-kissed orange bodies highlighted against the scorched tans of the moon-like rock formations. There’s so much to absorb, so many mini-stories to be told, scanning across this strange surface.” – Life Framer • Head to www.life-framer.com/winners to discover the full shortlist and comments - twenty images that inspire and challenge in equal measure. • #lifeframer #palomasaintleger #faceoftheearth #documentaryphotography #travelphotography #greece #greekisland #swimming #landscape #landscapephotography #socialdocumentary #travel #visualsoflife #exploretocreate #contemporaryart #contemporaryphotography #visualsgang #lifeframerstories

Trans(ition) Elio . . “I have always found such beauty and comfort in that which was established as “feminine”. All things soft and delicate, all things intricate and detailed, they all pleased me. But I soon came to learn that that is not what makes a woman. Femininity and Womanhood are two separate entities. The former is an energy, a set of characteristics. The latter is an intrinsic state of being. We all possess masculine and feminine energy, shaped into different characteristics and qualities that define us. But I am not a woman. I never was and I never will be. My gender is present to my core. How I decide to show myself to the world is a statement of what a man can look like. I am most comfortable when I am not confined by a set of expectations.” . . . @elio_yr #identity #youth #photography #art #portraitphotography #transmasculine #ftmtransgender #gender #androgynous #androgyny #queer #queermodel #socialdocumentary #newspaper #magazines #galleries #curators #exhibition #artproject #womeninphoto #remecampos #europe

[Curiosa] David Meskhi’s photographs play with techniques of juxtaposition and fragmentation, capturing youth cultures in his native Georgia. Caught between the past and the present, Meskhi’s photographs draw from the fragility of memory as it relates to the artist’s immediate surroundings. Rooted in autobiography and social documentary, his work is a reflection on his childhood growing up in a family of sports coaches. Trans(ition) Elliot. . . "I never knew what the word transgender meant, I didn’t even know such thing existed until I was 14 or so. As a kid my friends and I would always come up all kinds of stories and we would play pretend, becoming whoever we wanted to be. I was always a male character and when someone would tell me I can’t because of a “girl” I would get angry. I enjoyed being a boy, dressing like a boy and being treated like one, but that was always dismissed by everyone saying I’m just a tomboy. When there would be a big event (for example Christmas) my mum would always make me wear dresses and skirts, no matter how much I fought against it. It made me feel uncomfortable, like it wasn’t me. And so whenever I got the chance I would dress like a boy, stealing my cousin’s hoodies and my dad’s caps and shoes to walk around the house, feeling free even though no one took that seriously. And that was enough until the puberty kicked in, and everything went downhill again. We moved to England when I was 12, leaving everything behind. I was kind of happy about that as I could start fresh but I knew I would miss my family. But of course it didn’t matter where we went as my parents would continue forcing me to wear dressed to my new school until we got into a fight and we agreed on me wearing trousers. Even during the hot summer in PE I couldn’t stand wearing the skirt and I would rather boil in the baggy trousers meant to be worn in winter. As I mentioned before, I figured out what transgender was when I was around 14, I just looking through the internet until I stumbled across a BBC video about someone’s transition into a male and that’s when it hit me. It matched how I feel perfectly but since I was brought up Christian and was with a very religious partner at the time I dismissed it as well as my attraction to women, forcing myself to think I’m a straight girl. Whenever I asked people why I feel like I want to be a boy they would think I’m joking or would just tell me I’m confused and that went on for another two years. In those two years, I cut my hair shorter and shorter, wearing more masculine clothing to experiment and would pretend ..

80% of food consumed in Africa is produced by small holder famers, many of whom are women. As a group, they remain among the poorest and most marginalized in the world, lacking access to health care, education, nutritious food, and land rights. In recognition of the need to bridge the gap in gender equality and to celebrate women’s unsung contribution, today is the International Day of Rural Women. I took this shot in Senegal earlier this year, looking at some wonderful work being done to support women in setting up small farm plots to generate healthy food for their families, and a sustainable surplus income which they can invest in small businesses and the wellbeing of their families. 👊🏾 #senegal🇸🇳 #africa #african_portraits #women #womenempowerment #gendergap #ruralwomen #documentaryphotography #canonaustralia #blackandwhite #sustainabledevelopment #globalgoals #people_infinity #ig_respect #everydayeverywhere #socialdocumentary #internationaldayofruralwomen #unitednations

On Sep 24 @berniesanders posted on twitter, "Billionaires should not exist." At tonight's debate in Ohio, Sanders will be on stage with @tomsteyer, a billionaire. Will Sanders tell Steyer that he shouldn't exist? (photographs from Sep 2019) . Here's my view. Words matter. Sanders' sentence isn't an economic statement; it's a social statement. And to plainly say that any class of people "should not exist" in the United States concerns me. Frightens me, actually. The implications are dark. Too dark. I believe @berniesanders is well intended. But I know without doubt that @tomsteyer should exist. Corporations with too much power are worrisome. For the last year, I have been working with a small group of teenagers who identify as transgender, making collaborative portraits with them and this process is very much part of their personal journeys with their gender identity.
