This is the bubble Nebula, blown by the wind from a massive star, this interstellar apparition has a surprisingly familiar shape. Cataloged as NGC 7635, it is also known simply as The Bubble Nebula. Although it looks delicate, the 7 light-year diameter bubble offers evidence of violent processes at work. Above and left of the Bubble's center is a hot, O-type star, several hundred thousand times more luminous and some 45 times more massive than the Sun. A fierce stellar wind and intense radiation from that star has blasted out the structure of glowing gas against denser material in a surrounding molecular cloud. The intriguing Bubble Nebula and associated cloud complex lie a mere 7,100 light-years away toward the boastful constellation Cassiopeia. This sharp, tantalizing view of the cosmic bubble is a composite of Hubble Space Telescope image data from 2016, reprocessed to present the nebula's intense narrowband emission in an approximate true color scheme Image Credits: Hubble Space Telescope Follow @galaxy.echoes 🔭 Follow @galaxy.echoes 👨🏻‍🚀 Follow @galaxy.echoes 🌎 . . . #space #spaceships #spacescience #spacetravel #stars #starstuff #outerspace #galaxyechoes #planets #constellations #nebula #spaceart #nasa #solarsystem #solareclipse #supernova #moon #stargazing #astronomy #astrophysics #astronaut #science #astronomyfacts #astronomers #astronomer #spaceexploration #astronomyphotography #astronomylover #astronomynerd #astrophotography

To celebrate its 28th anniversary in space the NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope took this amazing and colourful image of the Lagoon Nebula. The whole nebula, about 4000 light-years away, is an incredible 55 light-years wide and 20 light-years tall. This image shows only a small part of this turbulent star-formation region, about four light-years across. This stunning nebula was first catalogued in 1654 by the Italian astronomer Giovanni Battista Hodierna, who sought to record nebulous objects in the night sky so they would not be mistaken for comets. Since Hodierna’s observations, the Lagoon Nebula has been photographed and analysed by many telescopes and astronomers all over the world. The observations were taken by Hubble’s Wide Field Camera 3 between 12 February and 18 February 2018. Appearing like a winged fairy-tale creature poised on a pedestal, this object is actually a billowing tower of cold gas and dust rising from a stellar nursery called the Eagle Nebula. The soaring tower is 9.5 light-years or about 90 trillion kilometres high, about twice the distance from our Sun to the next nearest star. Stars in the Eagle Nebula are born in clouds of cold hydrogen gas that reside in chaotic neighbourhoods, where energy from young stars sculpts fantasy-like landscapes in the gas. The tower may be a giant incubator for those newborn stars. A torrent of ultraviolet light from a band of massive, hot, young stars [off the top of the image] is eroding the pillar. The starlight also is responsible for illuminating the tower's rough surface. Ghostly streamers of gas can be seen boiling off this surface, creating the haze around the structure and highlighting its three-dimensional shape. The column is silhouetted against the background glow of more distant gas. The edge of the dark hydrogen cloud at the top of the tower is resisting erosion, in a manner similar to that of brush among a field of prairie grass that is being swept up by fire. The fire quickly burns the grass but slows down when it encounters the dense brush. In this celestial case, thick clouds of hydrogen gas and dust have survived longer than their surroundings in the face of a blast of ultraviolet light from the hot, young stars. Inside the gaseous tower, stars may be forming. Some of those stars may have been created by dense gas collapsing under gravity. Other stars may be forming due to pressure from gas that has been heated by the neighbouring hot stars. The first wave of stars may have started forming before the massive star cluster began venting its scorching light. The star birth may have begun when denser regions of cold gas within the tower started collapsing under their own weight to make stars. https://www.spacetelescope.org/images/heic0506b/. #space #spaceships #spacescience #spacetravel #stars #starstuff #outerspace #planets #constellations #nebula #spaceart #nasa #solarsystem #solareclipse #sun #moon #stargazing #astronomy #astrophysics #astronaut #scienc

NGC 1514 is a planetary nebula in the Taurus constellation, around 2200 light years from earth. It's sometimes referred to as "the crystal ball nebula" for reasons that should be pretty obvious.⁣ ⁣ So where does that specific appearance come from? Some of you may remember my post from September 7th (about M57) where I explained how energy/heat has a direct impact on the visuals of a (planetary) nebula. What's happening here is that we're actually looking at a binary star (two stars orbiting eachother closely) where one of them has run out of hydrogen, shed its outer layers (hence creating the nebula) while the other one is still in its main sequence (fusing hydrogen). If you zoom in to the center of the image; you can clearly see both stars. As a result, the energy/heat being emitted by the latter star is more than sufficient to ionize all the available oxygen and nitrogen; resulting in the blue/crystal like appearance.⁣ ⁣ While most planetary nebulae aren't the easiest targets to observe/image; this one isn't too bad. It's relatively small in the night sky, but at magnitude 9.4 it's fairly bright. Given the correct/dark conditions; budget telescopes with enough magnification should be able to observe at least the general shape/outlines of this one. Of course, if you want to get the colors to really pop and be able to distinguish the individual stars, you might need to upscale a bit.⁣ ⁣ #slooh #astronomer #astronomy #science #space #astrophysics #universe #cosmos #telescope #galaxy #milkyway #photography #spacetime #spacetravel #physics #astrophotography #interstellar #nebula #astronomie #stars #deepspace #deepsky #nightsky #nasa #spacex #photooftheday #picoftheday #naturephotography #stargazing

Gemini 12 marked the successful conclusion to the Gemini Program. The mission achieved the critical, and yet so elusive objective of a working EVA. Pilot Buzz Aldrin set a new record for the longest EVA - 5 hours and 30 minutes in total over three EVAs. This record would stand until Apollo 14 in 1971. The mission's original launch date was set around Halloween, so orange and black were used on the mission patch. The patch was designed to resemble a clock face, with the Roman numerals for the number 12 at the top. The Gemini capsule acts as the clock's hour hand to indicate the time of 12 o'clock. This represents the mission being the last mission of the Gemini Program. With the Apollo Program set to follow this mission, the ultimate goal was the Moon. This was depicted by the yellow crescent on the patch. #nasa #astronautics #astronauts #astronaut #spaceflight #spacegeeks #spacegeek #spacetravel #spaceexploration #space #projectgemini #geminiproject #geminiprogram #gemini12 #jimlovell #buzzaldrin

Shipwreck at Moonset A crescent Moon is about to sink under the western horizon in this sea and night skyscape. The atmospheric photo was taken on September 11 from the desert shore along the Skeleton Coast of Namibia. So close to moonset, the moonlight is reddened and dimmed by the low, long line-of-sight across the Atlantic. But near the center of the frame Venus still shines brightly, its light reflected in calm ocean waters. The celestial beacon above the brilliant evening star is bright planet Jupiter. Namibia's Skeleton Coast was so named for the many seal and whale bones that were once strewn along the shoreline. In more recent times it's better known for shipwrecks.
