Why would you cast a circle? Do you need to do it for every spell? . A circle is not necessary for every spell - kitchen witchery, folk magick, charms, even quick candle magick don't really require it - but it's important to remember most of witchcraft is personal preference - if you're a beginner and want to cast a circle for every spell then you're the boss, trust that you know what's best for you. . For ritual & ceremonial magick I cast a circle, there are 4 reasons I do this: . 1) To create a sacred space for inviting deities or a higher power to attend - either for spellwork or divination. 2) For protection from any outside influences. 3) To lengthen the ritual, which when you continue adding steps to ritual this can produce a trance-like state of mind which can give you access to 'spirit'. 4) To keep the energy, power and intention of the spell contained as you build & build it finally releasing it in one powerful swoop to work the magick in this world. . When working with your mind to create changes during ritual, spellwork and meditation - you are essentially working in an unseen realm, to create a change in this realm. I see it kind of like slipping in through the back door or tinkering with the hard drive. The effects in this world come later - for me, releasing the circle always feels like "ahh my work is done, this energy will go do its thing" & I can relax knowing I did my best at my end. . That's because at this stage in my life, most of my spellwork is based around change & goals however, in my mid 30s the majority of my spells were based around seeking knowledge & guidance. In my early 30s my personal work was very much regarding mental and emotional healing. In these cases I cast a circle to create sacred space, I would often sit in a circle of crystals meditating or place them all around my bed. . So casting a circle is not really a "do I need to" type of question but maybe ask if your spell or intention requires: Sacred space, protection, hyper-focus or releasing a lot of power in one go. Finding a 'why you want it' should help feel that it's something worthwhile to do, not just going through the motions. Then you can cast with intent 💚🙏

Do you celebrate The Winter Solstice? Also known as the festival of Yule, it is the shortest day - or 'the longest night' of the year (In the Northern Hemisphere) & it usually occurs on the 21st December - however, this year it will be the early hours of Sunday 22nd December. 🌞❄ There are typically 8-9 less daylight hours at the Winter Solstice than there are at the Summer Solstice! The word Solstice translates as 'Sun stands still' as the sun reaches its furthest point away from us - it appears to stand still for a few days, before finally tilting towards us & marking the slow return of the light as the days following begin to lengthen. 🌎🌞 It is this return of the sun & of the daylight that Pagans celebrate at Yule. Our ancestors needed as many daylight hours as possible for farming & in eras without central heating I can fully understand how the sun was worshipped - its rays needed for growth, light, warmth. The sun was - and still is - imperative to our survival. As someone who often suffers with Winter depression and fatigue - daylight and warmth are vital to my wellbeing, Yule is an important event to me. ❄🌞 At the Solstice many pagans and witches gather at Stonehenge in England - and at New Grange in Ireland, as well as many other sacred sights around the world including Luxor temple in Egypt and Chichén Itzá in Mexico, where ancient structures align with this astronomical event. 🌎🌞 I usually have a quiet moment to honour my ancestors and fully feel the hope that the suns return brings. However, each year I try to make it more & more festive as it truly has more meaning to me than Christmas does - so this year we'll be exchanging gifts, making our favourite food & playing games, as well as writing out our cards for 'The Wishing Tree'. If its sunny we'll go for a winter walk in the woods. 🌲 I also use this time to journal, analyse and reflect, planning some goals for 2020 for me & the kids, as well as new work projects. 🙏🌞 For me, The Winter Solstice is a more low key celebration that I thoroughly enjoy as it carries non of the anti-climax, stress or commercialism issues that Xmas day often does. 🌞 Will you be celebrating it this year?
