What's proper Jiu-jitsu posture? •••••••••••••••••• When you are sitting in someone's closed guard you have one objective: ✅Clear their legs while not getting swept or submitted. The ideal starting position is one where you can be safe from the guard player's attacks and are in good position to open the guard. Also when strikes are involved you want to place yourself in a position to strike effectively. . What is proper jiu jitsu posture? Jiu jitsu posture is different from regular standing posture because there are different objectives. In jiu jitsu when you are sitting in someone's closed guard you are mainly resisting a forward pull from the guard player. ❇️To remain balanced you have to keep your center of mass between your base of support. . If the guard player manages to pull your center of mass outside your base of support you will be unbalanced. . Initial posture: Tuck your tailbone underneath you (posterior pelvic tilt). When your pelvis tilts posteriorly it causes your spine to have slight flexion. The spinal and pelvic alignment puts you in a mechanical advantage to resist the guard player's anterior pulling force. Why? If you have neutral spinal alignment and they pull then you will be pulled into lumbar extension ie your center of mass will be much closer to the edge of your base of support. Therefore the force they will need to unbalance you will be considerably less. ✳️The most stable alignment is a neutral spinal with abdominal bracing, however if there is slight flexion it will not significantly decrease your stability. . When the opponent's pull increases or if they try a hip heist sweep to unbalance you posteriorly you can “engage your hips” meaning activating your glutes and slightly lifting your hips up to meet their increased force.

Getting to workout with the babe is my favorite. (Or rather him train me 🙈) Even if he does pull my messy bum by making sure that my head and neck are straight. 🤦🏼‍♀️ Finding my “sit bones” 🍑 weight on your toes, knees back, flat low back. Hanging out in this first position is actually a workout in itself, let me tell ya! 😱 To keep everything in check and just holding your weight. I’m training my body to be able to move more from my hips and finding my sit bones. Therefore, I’m not limiting my body and I can preform a lot of daily activities and get things done in a more efficient way. Getting all the focus off your lower back, by releasing all the tension and moving from the trunk instead! ✨ #workinprogress

Bulging discs, also known as a disc protrusion, are a very common occurrence. They usually remain asymptomatic; however, they can cause discomfort and disability in various parts of the body if the disc compresses an adjacent nerve root or the spinal cord. As we age, the outer fibrous portion of our discs can weaken. Pressure from the central core of the disc can then stretch to the outer rim, causing the disc to bulge. If left untreated, the disc can continue to bulge until it tears, which is classified as a herniated disc. Because a bulging disc does not always show symptoms, many people have bulging discs without realizing it. As long as the bulging area does not press against a nearby nerve, no symptoms occur. When the bulging disc does cause a pinched nerve, however, you may begin to experience symptoms. In the lower back, the damaged disc can cause pain to travel to the hips, buttocks, legs and feet. In the cervical spine, pain can radiate from the neck, down the arm and to the fingers. Approximately 90 percent of bulging discs occur in the lower back, or lumbar area, of the spine. The most common lumbar bulging disc is seen between lumbar vertebrae L4 and L5, and between vertebrae L5 and S1, causing pain in the L5 nerve or S1 spinal nerve, respectively. The sciatic nerve receives neurons from spinal nerves L3 through S3. If the bulging disc impinges upon one or more of these six spinal nerves, then sciatic pain could result. Good morning, #TechnicalTuesday! . . Improve strength and mobility in the thoracic spine by performing a standing one-arm row on a cable machine. Specifically, use the left hand to complete the one-arm row with the left foot and leg planted in front. The right leg is in back just as it would be in a stationary lunge. Use this opportunity to work on your balance as well (an important aspect for everyone!). . . When we perform the row in this “ same leg forward” position, we create an opportunity to get more of a work out from our back muscles, especially in the thoracic region. The eccentric contraction can be fully realized with a long, slow release of the arm, shoulder and back. Then, a complete concentric contraction is achieved as you pull the hand towards the chest, the shoulder all the way back and rotate the mid and lower back until the shoulders are parallel to the cable. A strong and mobile mid back or thoracic spine decreases the potential for low back pain and possibly shoulder pain. When the mid back is locked up, our low back takes the brunt of the work load, causing some aches and pain now and further down the road. Learning the hip hinge is perhaps one of the most important and beneficial things you can do for your spinal health. However, many dogmatic teachings are causing this great movement corrective to become much less effective. - The whole point of the hip hinge is to maintain proper lumbosacral alignment throughout the motion. This will engage the spinal erectors and QLs properly, and circumferentially load the disc, all of which promote healthy and pain free lifting and movement. - Many claim that it doesn't matter how we lift or move, because the spine is designed for all movements. In traditional Chinese culture, the spine was known as the heavenly stem. One of the major factors that throttles down human performance, is a miscommunication between the muscles and the spine. Learning how to generate and absorb force within the body while protecting the spine is one of the most important aspects of strength training. The complexity of the spine can be broken down into a few simple basic ideas to effectively build your back. 1️⃣: imbalance within a program to make sure extra back work is completed is totally fine, and almost encouraged based on the shoulder situation of the common athlete. During off seasons, or if we have blocks of time allowing it - some of my athletes train back 2-3 times per week in some way. 2️⃣: your back is probably strong, however it will be more useful the stronger your abs are. What your big back erectors and traps are trying to protect - your abdomen is protecting from the front. Build your stomach to be as strong as your pull. 3️⃣: ROTATE... so many people have a t-spine superglued in a fixed position. Most commonly, the weakest point for my athletes is their rotational ability. Although my hands here look like they are gripping the dumbbells, but actually they were very light, almost no gripping but only touching them .
