Tim worked as a musculoskeletal physiotherapist in Perth before spending 12 year in London. There, Tim completed the British Triathlon Federation Coach qualifications and the SICI Bike Fitting qualification through Cycle Fit of London. One of his highlights during this time was working as a field of play team member for multiple events during the 2012 London Olympics and Paralympics. Tim returned to New Zealand in early 2017, being a keen snowboarder and endurance athlete himself. Tim’s special interests include traumatic and overuse sports injuries, swimming/cycling/running biomechanics and injury risk reduction in endurance sports. He is a Tri NZ Foundation Level coach and a Professional Mountain Bike Instructor. Tim enjoys getting an in depth understanding of his client’s needs. Today I am posting about thoracic mobility and why you may want to work on it. The thoracic spine refers to the part of the spine that connects your neck to your low back. Attached to them are also your ribs that will then connect to the front of your chest onto the sternum. When this area is feeling stiff or tight, it can produce pain between the shoulders blades, and it can be related to pain experienced in the neck and low back! But why? . ✔ Humans are habitual creatures, for better or worse when we start getting into a rhythm (including our movement) it tends to stick. Sometimes that rhythm can lead to relying on one region of the spine more than the other - a.k.a. movement 'compensations', which may build up over time and overload your neck or low back tissues - causing pain. I'm not saying that ALL issues occur because of this, its just one of many reasons out there . 🤔 So what can you do? Its goal is to keep the neuromotor connection between your brain and feet as alert as possible so they maintain all their reflexes, vigilance and responsiveness when you come across unstable ground. Improving proprioception can (greatly) reduce the risk of a sprained ankle. That skipping rope abandoned in the garage will quickly become a best friend to a sportsperson in lockdown. Why? It relates to the first 3 days of an injury when the inflammation cascade is proliferating. 🔥 . Things to avoid in those first few days? 🚫 . H - Heat 🔥 A - Alcohol 🍾 R - Running/extensive exercise 🏃🏽‍♂️ M - Massage 💆🏽‍♀️ . The reasoning for this is based on the above causing further dilation of blood vessels which “could” lead to further inflammation or tissue damage. . Hope you found this useful to some degree. My foot is STILL broken, but I am 5 weeks back to working out 🏋🏽‍♀️💪🏽🥊 (very mindfully and cautiously), after 0 physical activity for 3 months straight! Exercise - how much is considered enough? 🤷🏼‍♂️⁠ Sadly most of us don't reach the national recommendations. ⁠We know we are all trying to keep at home but it is still important to do exercise daily for your mind and body. ⁠ We are live streaming pilates and bodyweight exercise classes to keep you moving, check out our Facebook page for more info.⁠ ⁠ • Everyone, regardless of injury, illness or age should aim to be physically active for 30 minutes a day.⁠ • These 30 minutes can be done in 10-minute bouts. At least twice a week, these bouts should be 20 minutes long and either maintain or increase in intensity. ⁠ • These activities should be slightly difficult and be done on top of your normal everyday activities. This is needed to maintain good health and prevent diseases (e.g. diabetes, certain types of cancer, high blood pressure among others). ⁠ ⁠ These above recommendations also apply to people with osteoarthritis. The ideal type and amount of exercise depends on the person’s age, abilities, functional limitations, and health status. If you have not been physically active in the past, it may be a good idea to start slowly.
