There are so many new kakapo in the world since this past breeding season so I figured I’d make a fact about the cool names some of the kakapo have! A male hatched in 2016 was named Attenborough after the famed British documentary commentator and a personal hero of mine. A female also hatched in 2016 named Hera after the Queen of the Greek Gods A male (the father of Hera) named Arab, after the man who singlehandedly saved the female kakapo population and probably the kakapo from extinction (see fact about Gary Aburn for more info!) A female hatched in 2009 named Hinemoa, a popular Maori name as a nod towards the native New Zealanders and how the kakapo affected their culture A female hatched in 2016 named Rimu after the favorite fruit of the kakapo that kickstarts breeding season every few years A male named Blades which is a super cool name who has fathered over 20 chicks! A male hatched in 1998 named Sinbad, and the son of the famed Richard Henry. Much like Sirocco who was hatched the year before, he prefers human contact to other kakapo and has an awesome name.
