Advent and Christmas is a season for togetherness, reflection, a feeling of peace and goodwill unto all mankind. Unfortunately this feeling is often lost with people rushing around to get the last gifts, with perceived must-dos and traditional obligations. Wanting to bring back cheer, I got out of this rat race and rushing. I now allow myself to take time for me, to reflect what Advent and Christmas really means to me and to spend time on things that bring me joy: baking cookies, writing very personal Christmas cards to my beloved ones and decorating the Christmas tree with my children. Anxiety makes people want to control their environments and alter their surroundings in a way that would be more comfortable to them and less anxiety provoking. Also, due to the overwhelming nature of anxiety, people start to feel like nothing is under control, and hence, they tend to overcompensate by exerting so much control and instilling structure where -to others- might not necessarily be needed. Sometimes it is really small things like choosing where everyone sits at a table, the place to eat, checking with their partner a lot or asking that things are done in a certain way! Sometimes it looks like they are trying to control the people around them but the truth is they are just trying to feel safe! 🔹 Energy is a complex, multifaceted part of our human experience. Mental and emotional energy operates like a bank account, and we are allocated a certain amount every day. With that energy, you can make withdrawals (busy days at work, Christmas shopping, looking after kids), or you can credit your account with restorative activities (walking, quiet time or quality time with friends and family). Sometimes, especially in the Holiday season, we can quickly overdraw our accounts - and left unchecked this can lead to burnout. . Burnout is defined as a state of chronic stress, leading to exhaustion, detachment, and feelings of ineffectiveness. It is beyond what you may know as ‘regular tiredness’. . Do you identify with any of the following symptoms during busy times? . 🔹 MENTAL: Fatigue, depletion, forgetfulness, inability to focus, sleeplessness . 🔹 PHYSICAL: Chest pain, heart palpitations, shortness of breath, dizziness, stomach pains, headaches, weakened immune system, loss of appetite . 🔹 EMOTIONAL: A sense of dread for what lies ahead, tension, worry, sadness, feeling hopeless, exacerbated anxiety and depression . Today was probably one of the lowest days I've had in a while. Yet another unexpected significant hiccup in homeownership, this time in the form of a burning and cracked furnace that needs complete replacement. This, after a long stretch of stressful triggers, sent me into an anxiety attack that left me feeling defeated and wrung out when I came out on the other side of it. . . I almost just gave in to the anxiety and let it chain me to the bed all day. If I had I wouldn't have stood on the porch and laughed so hard my sides hurt over a joke about dog poo. I wouldn't have won a near-perfect game of Kittens in a Blender. I would have missed out on a warm reassuring hug. The softest knit blanket would never have been accidentally discovered and brought home to comfort and soothe. . . So yeah, this morning really sucked. I still feel shitty on the inside and overwhelmed. But it's not all bad. Tomorrow will be better. Sometimes too much of a good thing is bad for us. . It could be coffee and donuts. ☕️🍩 . Or it could be life. . My second burnout happened when life was good and full. I felt so blessed! . I had gotten married, I had a great job, I had a coaching business with amazing clients that I loved and so many great friends! BUT... . I said yes to everything!! And everyone!! . I didn’t want to let anyone down or give the perception that I couldn’t handle it. . The reality was I COULDN’T. And I burnt out! My hormones went CRAZY! 🤪 . I gained weight RAPIDLY, I started getting terrible headaches, my hair started falling out, and I felt sooooooo sad. ALL. THE. TIME. 😭 . I wasn’t myself at all. 🙅🏻‍♀️ . Do you blame yourself?💭 .. Are you quick to turn on your body? Blaming it for how you feel? Feeling sorry because you can’t figure it out? Being frustrated with it all? .. I’ve been there. Blaming my body for not being strong enough. Blaming myself for burning out. Telling myself I’m not as good as everyone else, because I simply couldn’t hack it. .. But now I realize how wrong I was. My body is strong as hell - so strong that it warned me when I pushed it too hard. My self-awareness is so in-tune, that even though I burnt out, I knew exactly what my body needed to recoup. And I am enough exactly as I am. I burnt out going down a path that wasn’t meant for me. And only when I began down a new path did I really dive into my passion and learn to shine. .. I encourage you to explore ways you can adopt self-compassion. How can you be understanding of your body, heart and soul? Where are you blaming yourself when you could be sending yourself love? .. Your body sends warning signals when things are out of whack. You can either place blame and ignore, or accept and love. .. Life is hard. Shit happens. Our bodies on average need 64 OZ (1900 ml) of water each day depending on your activity level and body type. 💧. There are many reasons to reduce your use of plastic bottles and plastic food containers, but the main one is the potential health risks.  Heavy metals and other contaminants in the food and water you consume may be stored in your body if you have genetic mutations (MTHFR) and cannot properly detoxify. 💧. RESEARCH: Christmas and mental health For Christmas 2017, we stayed in a tiny farmhouse in Borganes in Iceland. Nestled at the bottom of a hill, it snowed and we saw the auroras borealis. I stood on the porch in the cold, rejoicing at the beauty of the dancing lights. What a wonderful experience. Whilst it is a happy time for some, Christmas is not always the season to be jolly. An interesting study entitled “What makes for a Merry Christmas?” was published in the Journal of Happiness Studies in 2002.  The study indicated that people whose lives are focused on goals such as intimacy & community at Christmas, report greater psychological wellbeing. In contrast, people who are more concerned with money, possessions, & image were less happy. Overall, the study found that 75% of the respondents had a satisfactory Christmas whereas only 10% had a very bad Christmas. However, 44% reported that they had a stressful Christmas despite being satisfied.  This research also found that more happiness was reported during the holiday period when family and religious experiences were particularly important, & lower wellbeing occurred when spending money & receiving gifts predominated. In general, males were much happier & less stressed than females. Older individuals reported greater Christmas happiness, although this effect, was largely explained by more frequent experiences of religion. There were no differences on any other demographic factors including income, education, or marital status. Something to think about if you celebrate Christmas, or other traditional family holidays.
