I made the decision to rescue as many strawberry 🍓 plants as I could from the drought ravaged patch I had in production at the old gardens. . . I had no expectations or was I intending to harvest any berries this season but even though I gave them all a severe haircut and removed flower spikes I still have plants giving us food. . . Sometimes the rule book goes out the window in garden practices... there has been more than on occasion where I have found accepted garden lore to 90% fiction and nature just does its thing regardless of what we think it should do.

😍 Stems & stalks. Food waste is the decrease in the quantity or quality of food from decisions and actions from consumers, food service providers and retailers. One of the many ways to minimize food waste in our every day is to spread that love to those stems and stalks - like these delicious, fluffy, lush carrot tops! We're talking using root to stem - and nose to tail. All of it as much as you can. It all counts. It all matters. It is all valuable. Need some ideas? Get creative, experiment, explore foods from all parts of the world, talk to your neighbours, friends, family-friends, aunty, grandma, the butcher at that Korean supermarket, the farmers at that farmers market, the cook at that Hungarian restaurant, the elders in your life, the herbalist in Chinatown, volunteers at that community food garden, etc. We have access to diversity in knowledge and wisdom from many different cultures. We can learn so much from one another - including our past. We love that "Zero Waste" and "Circular Economies" are becoming more widespread again in some parts of the world - but let's remember that these are far from being new methodologies, lifestyles and practices. Indigenous peoples and our ancestors, they know some things☝️😏. #RootToStem #NoseToTail #WorldFoodDay @fao @unitednations #UnitedNations #Agriculture #Agrifood #ZeroHunger #IndigenousAgriculture #FoodSecurity #ZeroFoodWaste #CircularFoodEconomy #SustainableAgriculture

Aphids beware the predatory wasps task force has arrived! Now for the science part- The little wasps are going to lay eggs in the aphid’s body. The eggs hatch into a larva that feeds off the aphid and then pupates in it turning it into a mummy 😱and finally a nectar loving adult emerges to enjoy the flowers in the garden and look for a new aphid victim to lay its eggs in. #biologicalpestmangment #natureisamazing #mummiesinthegarden

✨5 acres of irrigated pasture✨ • J and his family let me use this piece of ground by our house, and I’m so grateful for it. (if you swipe and turn your sound on you can hear the sheep munching. 😂) this is where I’ve started our rotational grazing experiment with the sheep. they sometimes move elsewhere but for most of the summer, they will be here! • rotational grazing differs from normal grazing in that instead of putting your livestock in a large pasture and leaving them there until it’s eaten down, you put the animals into a very small pasture and move them often. responsible grazing benefits the soil in all kinds of ways (grazing actually encourages grass to grow! growing healthy grass maintains topsoil and root structure and stores carbon! I could go on.) rotational grazing is a variation and is built on the idea is that it it concentrates fertilizer from the animals, forces them to graze evenly and beat back the weeds, and mimics what would happen in nature when large bands of herbivores moved through grass areas. over time intensive rotational grazing will build topsoil, deepen root structures, eliminate need for fertilizer, and allow you to stock more animals on the same amount of ground. It’s also supposed to be great for soil health, carbon storage and overall microbiome, in turn being great for the animals. • it’s all a dreamy concept but this summer and fall have been about execution! and it’s taken a lot of work. Moving the sheep between every 1-4 days is no small task, especially in the snow and sub-freezing temps. 😅 schlepping hand line daily to keep the water going. the sheep like to escape as you all know, which adds to the fun. I probably messed up more than I succeeded. • BUT! we have a system now. each day gets easier. I’ve learned to “read” the pastures better and better. I’m sure my system will change and adapt as I keep learning and working on it. but it’s been a wonderful summer and I’m so attached to this little corner. thanks for feeding the sheeple, pasture! you’re doing amazing, sweetie! #icelandicsheep #littlecreeklamb #montana #ranching #rotationalgrazing #farmtotable #sustainableagriculture

Flail mowing spent tomatoes. We mowed it on the highest setting a few times back and forth and then dropped the mower all the way down and it chopped it all into little places. It’s cool to recycle the organic matter and biomass back into the soil to regain some nutrients that the crops used up. We check each bed before in case there are toads or snakes and we move them to another part of the farm. Then we harrow the matter back with any amendments that are necessary too. Makes turning over crop so much faster. Plus, someone has converted the BCS to an electric so it’s probably got a great future in small farming if it didn’t already.

What can mushrooms do for your garden? 🍄 Because mushrooms have no chlorophyll to help make food, they rely on the nutrition of a plant (live or dead) to eat. That doesn’t mean mushrooms are sucking the life out of your plants. Quite the opposite: most mushrooms have a symbiotic relationship with plants, particularly at the root level. Mushrooms help give your plants the nutrients they need to help produce the sugars the mushroom feeds off of, so they’re helping each other to grow and receive the best nutrients they can get. 🍄 Beautiful works of nature, mushrooms are hugely beneficial to a garden. Fungi decompose garden organics into usable foods for plants, they break down complex organic compounds like those in dead leaves and wood chips, and mulch into substances plants can use. So letting mushrooms grow in your compost pile is actually beneficial! 🍄 Next time you see a mushroom (or two) growing in your garden, remember they are a sign of healthy, nutrient rich soil! Be proud! You’ve heard that pesticides are bad for you, but how much of them can the body actually tolerate? Can't you just wash them off? Do fruits and vegetables absorb enough pesticide for it to actually be noticeably dangerous to humans? . The truth is, many thin-skinned fruits and vegetables absorb pesticides at higher rates, and eating these regularly can cause pesticides to accumulate in the body. (And washing your food may not wash them out.) When the CDC tested Americans, a particular pesticide was found inside more than 85 %. Even in tiny doses, chemicals can negatively affect your hormones and many other aspects of your health. . You can partially avoid eating foods with high pesticide residue by going organic. Here are the “Dirty Dozen” (foods you should buy organic) and the Clean Fifteen (foods that don’t absorb pesticides easily and can be bought cheaply). . Dirty Dozen: Apples, Peaches, Nectarines, Strawberries, Grapes, Celery, Spinach, Sweet bell peppers, Cucumbers, Cherry Tomatoes, Snap Peas, Potatoes . Clean Fifteen: Pineapple, Mangos, Papaya, Kiwi, Grapefruit, Cantaloupe, Avocados, Sweet corn, Cabbage, Sweet peas (frozen), Onions, Asparagus, Eggplant, Cauliflower, Sweet potatoes . Note: Keep in mind that not all fruits and vegetables absorb enough pesticide to be a danger to the human body. . . . . . #soilhealth #sustainableagriculture #farmlife #instagarden #organic #pesticides #nutritionfacts #foodasmedicine #nutrition #healthandwellness #holistic #soilscience #farm365 #guthealth #supportsmallfarms #microbiome #sustainablefarming #loveyourfarmer #farming #hormonebalance #fourseasonfarming #growyourownfood #organicgarden #farmersfootprint #sustainability #conservation #eatlocal

@monalifeorg

Did you know you could help save the world by being lazy?😴⠀ ⠀ I know it sounds counter intuitive. We’ve always been told to “fight” for the planet and that sounds like hard work.⠀ ⠀ Most of us are already too overwhelmed with life in the modern world to do MORE.⠀ ⠀ So, let’s do LESS instead!⠀ ⠀ Here’s 3 examples of how lazier farmers could save the world :⠀ ⠀ 1) Grow What Wants to Grow: Most farmers spend their lives battling weeds to grow what they want (or think they want). Rather than going into battle with nature, embrace what wants to grow instead. Purslane, dandelions, mint, wild quinoa, wild grains, amaranth, sorghum, mallow, and bermuda grass are a select few of the often vilified plants that are nutritious, delicious, ecologically beneficial and indestructible plants. Consider befriending them!🌱⠀ ⠀ 2) Share with other Animals: Most farmers spend their lives battling the animals that want to eat what they’re growing. Birds, insects, rodents, and a host of other animals become enemy number one in the name of maximum yield and minimum “loss”. We believe in creating farms that benefit all life, not just humans. When you strive for biodiversity, natural balance, ecological resilience, and know how to cook with these unconventional ingredients, you will never go hungry.🐛⠀ ⠀ 3) Stop Tilling the Soil: Most farmers grow one kind of crop per season. They often rotate what that one crop is but between each season they prepare for the next crop by digging, stirring, and overturning the soil before planting new crops. This practice is both extremely labor intensive and environmentally destructive. “No Till” farming practices help sequester carbon to help restore healthy atmospheric C02 levels, while improving soil health!💩⠀ ⠀ Interested? Direct message me if you want to learn more about MoNA Nature Farming. ⠀ -⠀ -⠀ -⠀ -⠀ -⠀ -⠀ -⠀ #notill #soilhealth #carbonsequestration #naturefarm #regenerativeagriculture #regenerativefarming #sustainableeating #sustainablefarming #sustainableagriculture #organicfarming #organicagriculture #notillfarming #notillrevolution #eattheweeds #bugsarefriends #beneficialinsects #biodiversity #doless

Using Instagram as a farmer or homesteader can be as rewarding as it can be frustrating.👩🏻‍🌾 . Rewarding because here on the ‘gram I have made so many lifelong friends. When you are a first generation female farmer, more often than not you lack immediate community. When I started sharing my farming journey on Instagram, the amount of community I found was abundant and heartwarming. I instantly felt less alone. Any other farmers experience this?🙋🏻‍♀️ . But it also can be frustrating if you are trying to properly balance building community with promoting your farm’s products. Promoting and selling on Instagram can feel murky and strange if you don’t have the right set of tools. 🛠 . I’ve tested, experimented, and dug deep into the analytics to create a powerful and profitable strategy to use on Instagram and I want to share it with you so you can use it for your farm.💰 . In Module 10 of the Cultivating Capital Course, I hand over all these tools and teach you how to use them - I’m talking *everything* you need to know about using Instagram to build your customer base and harvest consistent profit.🤓 . In Module 10 we cover: •Why use Instagram for your farm •How to get high quality photography for your Instagram feed •What types of Instagram accounts are available for your farm •How to put together the perfect Instagram post •How to use Instagram stories for your farm •Building community and not competition on Instagram •The secret hack to selling on Instagram without the swipe up feature •The overarching strategy you need to integrate when using Instagram •How to set up your Instagram Shop •Instagram best practices for your farm . Despite our knowledge of plastic’s harmful effects on the environment, we’ve become so reliant on plastic that there seems to be no end in sight. 🥺 In fact, plastic production is growing on a yearly basis–and posing a potentially mortal threat to us all. 😱 . Discovered in 2012 by Yale University students, Pestalotiopsis microspora is a rare species of mushroom from the Amazon rainforest that’s capable of subsisting on a diet of pure plastic, or more accurately, the main ingredient in plastic–polyurethane–before converting the human-made ingredient into purely organic matter. 🤯 . And not only can Pestalotiopsis microspora live off of our plastic waste, it can also live without oxygen–meaning that the rare breed of mushroom would make an ideal agent for landfill clean-up, literally from the bottom-up. 👍 . And as it turns out, Pestalotiopsis microspora isn’t alone in the world of plastic-eating mushrooms–and some of its plastic-consuming kin are event perfectly safe for us humans to consume.🔥 . #linovittherapy #saynotoplastic #plastic #plasticsucks #plasticfree #zerowaste #minimalist #environmentalist #earth #onlyhome #saveearth #recycle #reducereuserecycle #biodegradable #biodegradableglitter #renewableenergy #climatestrike #climatechange #globalwarming #permaculture #hemp #trees #motherearth #mushrooms #science #sustainableliving #sustainability #sustainableagriculture #sustainablefashion #sustainablefuture

Several years ago we lost power at our chicken coop after a tree fell on the power line. So we’re brooding these chicks near our packing shed, which means daily they are getting a dose of fresh leafy greens. We have too many predators to allow them in the pasture just yet, so we’re thankful to be offering them greens. They don’t seem to have a favorite and are certainly enjoying kale, collards, swiss chard, napa cabbage, green cabbage, red cabbage, broccoli leaves, cauliflower leaves. . . . #chicks #growing #layers #pasturedpoultry #australorp #smallfarm #foxeslovethemtoo #hotspringsnc #marshallnc #asheville #realfood #knowyourfarmer #sustainable #sustainableagriculture #foodies #eatlocal #smallfarm #communitysupporyedagriculture #appalachiangrown #appalachianmountains .

Today's noble steed was an absolute monster - it got me thinking about the concept of 'efficiency'. It shifts 20t of potatoes at 70km/h, which is a wee bit more than I can do with a wheelbarrow! But when you consider the colossal amount of raw materials, fuel and money that go into its manufacture, distribution, maintenance and running, suddenly my wheelbarrow seems a bit better! It's interesting to work on other farms and see how they function, but for me it makes ecological, financial and just plain common sense to keep my inputs as low as possible. 🌱🌿 #britishfarming #farming #sustainableagriculture #potatoes #jcb #globalfood

We’re getting some much needed rain on the farm today! While all of our peach trees and blueberry bushes are catered to by miles of underground irrigation, this rain is helping to establish the recently planted fescue grass in row middles of our youngest blueberry bushes, planted last spring. These grasses not only create a beautiful pick your own experience but also help to foster soil fertility and promote weed control. Look for this block of young bushes to start producing in a few years. In the meantime, bring on the rain!

Happy #worldfoodday! We love food at A Rocha and believe that eating together fosters community and well-being. As one of our fave theologians, Norman Wirzba, says, "Food is God's love made edible". Food connects us intimately with the goodness of creation and reminds us to care for that goodness too: people, pigs, plants and all! . . . . #arochacanada #arochamanitoba #arocha #creationcare #creation #godscreation #environmentalstewardship #stewardshio #christian #earth #conservation #sustainableagriculture #environmentaleducation #outdooreducation #goodfood #zerohunger

🌱Fresh, local produce🌱. Rob came home last night &, at first, I only saw his reflection. I thought he brought me flowers & then realized, he did one better! He brought home our @localrootsnyc weekly fruit & veg share. This week there are 2 types of greens 🎉🎉- broccoli rabe + red dragon’s tongue mustard greens. I’m tempted to recreate @casey_corn’s broccoli rabe mac & cheese recipe with all these greens! Maybe I’ll go for a #vegan version with a sauce made from the butternut squash & sweet potatoes! Thoughts? . . Check out my stories to see how I properly store greens #plasticfree! #madewithlocalroots #localfood #eatlocal

Together, we are reaching #ZeroHunger ! In doing this, it is critical that we change the way we produce, consume, and sell our #food 🥕🍅🍆With your support, we train Forest Garden Farmers to think differently and carry out techniques that will help the land, our growing population, and farming families like their own. It's #WorldFoodDay! This is by no means a trivial day - it's celebrated across 150 countries to support the mission of the UN Food & Agriculture Organisation (@fao) to end world hunger. . The FAO describe 2019s theme best: . "Achieving Zero Hunger is not only about addressing hunger, but also nourishing people, while nurturing the planet. This year, World Food Day calls for action across sectors to make healthy and sustainable diets affordable and accessible to everyone. At the same time, it calls on everyone to start thinking about what we eat." . . . #foodandagriculture #worldhunger #endworldhunger #sustainableagriculture #

I had a different post planned for today, but @leahstellapayne alerted me that it’s #WorldFoodDay! And as most of you have perhaps guessed, I’m very passionate about food! Food system issues are extremely complex... The agriculture industry has a tremendous impact on our planet. It is responsible for about 13% of the total GHG emissions globally. But the environmental impact doesn’t stop there. Pollution of air, soil, and water from chemical inputs (herbicides, pesticides, and fertilizers) are also of concern. As is deforestation and soil degradation. My Soil and Water Conservation class at #UCLA gave the statistic that we’ve lost 50% of *arable* soil in the last 200 years. And according to the FAO, agriculture is responsible for 70% of the deforestation in Latin America between 2000 and 2010. (That’s not an anomaly, visit @iquitwaste to learn more about deforestation rates in Southeast Asia.) . And human and animal exploitation in food production is also a major concern. There’s enough on this topic to write a book, so I won’t dive in too deep. But putting the treatment of livestock aside, from the child slavery used in crop production overseas to the exploitation of migrant farmworkers right here in California, there is nothing “ethical” about how the majority of our food is produced (even if you’re 100% plant-based). This is just what it takes to PRODUCE the food. Once it’s produced, there are more issues! Of which food waste and food accessibility are the most concerning. Around 40% of the food we produce will never actually go to feeding a person. (Head over to @anurbanharvester to learn more about the tremendous problems behind food waste.) Yet even with all this waste, in LA county (where I live) 1 in 5 people are considered food insecure (and that’s 1 in 8 for the U.S. as a whole) (Continued in comments)

T r e a t m e n t // The Varroa Mite is a dangerous little tiny beast that can easily turn a healthy hive into a very weak one. The Varroa mite can only reproduce in a honey bee colony. It attaches to the body of the bee and weakens the bee by sucking fat bodies. A significant mite infestation leads to the death of a honey bee colony, usually in the late autumn through early spring. The Varroa mite is the parasite with possibly the most pronounced economic impact on the beekeeping industry. Varroa is considered to be one of multiple stress factors contributing to the higher levels of bee losses around the world. There are different ways of treatment that one can do. Last year I did Apiguard and this year I decided to do Formic Pro which is a 10 day treatment with two strips in between the brood box and the food stores. This was the result from using it, even after shaking some powdered sugar on the brood box before starting the treatments there were still this many mites in the hive! Now it’s not 100% effective, I’m sure there are still mites in the hives, but wow! I’m glad I treated and hope for the best 🤞🏼 going into the winter season. . . . #KatesHoney #HoneyBee #BeeFacts #Beekeeping #ConnecticutBeekeeping #InsectsOfInsta #InsectsOfInstagram #SustainableAgriculture #WhatsTheBuzz #BeeLove #SaveTheBees #BeekeepersMacro #BeeGeek #MindYourBeeswax #HoneyBees #Honey #Bees #Beekeeping #Beekeeper #Entomology #InstaInsect #Photography #Nature #BackyardBeekeeping 🐝
