How much do you know about #bees? . A foraging #bumblebee with a full stomach is only ever about 40 minutes away from starvation. When bees begin to appear, it is a sure sign that summer is on the way – and designer Andrew Perro and illustrator Dave Murray have come up with a honey of an issue to help celebrate. . Experts believe there are approximately 4,000 species of bees native to North America. Two of the more than 850 species native to Canada can be found on Canada Post's latest stamp issue. . The rusty-patched bumble bee (Bombus affinis), once common in parts of Ontario and Quebec, was the first bee species to be listed by the Committee on the Status of Endangered Wildlife in Canada (COSEWIC). The metallic green bee (Agapostemon virescens), one of many sweat bee species, digs its nest in the ground and can be found throughout southern Ontario. . The Official First Day Cover features another Canadian native – a small eastern resin bee (Anthidiellum notatum), which constructs a unique nest from resin and gravel. . A flower we all know well, so well - dandelion, Taraxacum officinale, Asteraceae, and some cool stuff. Photo 1: This sunny yellow flower head is composed entirely of hundreds of tiny bisexual ray florets. Each floret produces both ample nectar and pollen. Blossom subtended by 2 sets of involucral bracts, one larger and erect and the outer, smaller and usually reflexed. Photo 2: despite the fact that dandelion produces pollen, it reproduces asexually by a process called “apomixis”, which does not involve fertilization, but progeny are produced through seed that is genetically identical to the mother plant. Clones of the Mom! Happy Mother’s Day 😉 Photo 3: Drawing page with a dissected flower head. The style of each tiny floret is surrounded by inward turned tiny anthers, and has little protuberances on it that helps pollen to stick to it. As the style lengthens, both pollen and nectar rise with it and become easily accessible to foragers. Photo 4: A drawing of a dandelion pollen grain, taken from Dorothy Hodges’ book, Pollen Loads of the Honey Bee. Seems like everything in the dandelion is spikey! The pollen of dandelion, is apparently not of high nutritional quality (lacking 2 essential amino acids), and studies have shown that bb’s and solitary bees reared solely on dandelion pollen do not fare well, but that notwithstanding, for generalist bees who forage on a variety of different plants, dandelion pollen is still a good source of early season food. We need dandelions! "Landscape workers finished planting a pollinator garden in Hillandale Park on Friday — the first of may soon see popping up around the city and the state. . Pollinator gardens are meant to attract bees, birds, and butterflies. Flowers like bee balm, cone flower, black-eyed susans, ticseed and sunflowers were planted to attract them. . Landscape manager Mike Hott said as pollinators habitats are destroyed they continue to leave, the importance of these types of gardens grows. . "Some people just take it for granted, but you can't. Plants use advertising-like strategies to attract bees with colour and scent . "Watching plants and pollinators such as bees can teach us a lot about how complex networks work in nature. There are thousands of species of bees around the world, and they all share a common visual system: their eyes are sensitive to ultraviolet, blue and green wavelengths of the light spectrum. . This ancient colour visual system predates the evolution of flowers, and so flowers from around the world have typically evolved colourful blooms that are easily seen by bees. For example, flowers as perceived by ultraviolet-sensitive visual systems look completely different than what humans can see. . However, we know that flowers also produce a variety of complex, captivating scents. So in complex natural environments, what signal should best enable a bee to find flowers: colour or scent?" . A landscape enhancement that's good for the ecosystem? Consider a hedgerow. . "If your yard or garden needs a boost for birds and wildlife, more privacy, or a good windbreak, creating a new hedgerow just might be in your future. Hedgerows not only add interest and beauty, they also improve the biodiversity of one's yard, garden or property. Spring is a great time to get started. . Made up of mixed woody shrubs and trees, hedgerows have traditionally been used as fences between fields or properties. However, the important ecosystem services they provide are immense. . Scientists know that hedgerows made from diverse plant species are especially beneficial to bird and wildlife habitat. One example? A thoughtfully created hedgerow will support populations of both monarch and swallowtail butterflies. Hedgerows also benefit migratory songbirds whose populations are down across North America." . This Flower May Make Multicolored Pollen Just to Please Bugs ... . "The trout lily is a North American spring wildflower that’s cuter than its name suggests. Dappled leaves frame a little yellow blossom that keeps its face shyly toward the ground. Inside the bloom, the flower’s anthers and pollen vary from bright yellow to dark red. Researchers could find no purpose for the different colors—except, maybe, to satisfy the whims of pollinating insects. . Plenty of flowers come in multiple petal colors, and other research has explored the reasons, write @uottawa biologist Emily Austen and her coauthors. Different petal hues may help a plant deter hungry grazers, attract pollinators, or survive in different environmental conditions. But there’s been less research into why some flowers’ sexual organs vary in color, Austen writes. The trout lily, Erythronium americanum, is a striking example." . Here's a great excuse to stop mowing your lawn ... from @popsci . "Around the world, bee populations have plummeted because of habitat loss and pesticide use. But green spaces within cities and towns can give bees a much-needed refuge. And if you have a yard, then you too can help—especially if you’re lazy about lawn care. . It turns out that lawns with plenty of weeds like dandelions and clover can offer nectar and pollen for bees in suburban areas where prime habitat is hard to come by. Scientists recently identified 111 different bee species in just a handful of yards in Springfield, Massachusetts. Most of these were tiny sweat bees about the size of a grain of rice, but the yards also attracted honeybees and bumblebees. . “These were not yards that had pollinator gardens, they didn’t have special flowers, they weren’t next to forests or other types of more natural landscapes, so that in and of itself was pretty amazing,” says Susannah Lerman, a research ecologist for the @usdagov's @u.s.forestservice." . In return, the bees will increase the health and productivity of your garden. . Choose plants that attract bees. Bees love native wildflowers, flowering herbs, and many flowering fruits and vegetables. Select single flower types for your bee garden rather than heavily ruffled double flowers. . Double-headed flowers look showy but produce much less nectar and make it more difficult for bees to get to the protein-rich pollen. Building a backup bee ... the world's largest almond grower is creating a novel replacement for the embattled honeybee. What's the replacement? It's BOB's aka blue orchard mason bees! . The need for a backup bee has become critical, particularly in almond orchards. Almonds are California’s second-largest crop, injecting an estimated $21 billion annually into the state’s economy. . In 2016 California’s almond growers needed nearly 1.9 million honeybee colonies—almost three quarters of all the commercial colonies in the country—to pollinate their 940,000 acres. Bees make a great sound as they buzz from flower to flower and you can’t help but admire their tireless work ethic as they fly miles and miles every day to collect nectar and pollen to produce honey. . What are Bee Boles? Bee Boles are a row of recesses, often in a south-facing garden wall. Each recess was big enough to hold a skep - the coiled-straw hive used by beekeepers in Britain before the introduction of the modern wooden hive in the late 19th century. . Beekeeping or apiculture has left a small but charming legacy in European agricultural architecture, from the early 12th to the mid 19th century, when modern hives made special buildings for apiculture unnecessary. . #apiculture #bees #bumblebees #masonbees #sweatbees #nativebees #honeybees #managedbees #skep #pollinators #beefriendly #pollinatorfriendly #pesticidefree #feedthebees

As those dreaded dandelions first peek through the snow, remember this, and make a commitment to pull off the deadheads before they can release seeds. This way the pollinators get first dibs on the rich pollen. . #bees #bumblebees #masonbees #sweatbees #nativebees #pollinators #beefriendly #pollinatorfriendly #pesticidefree #feedthebees

Not sure what kind of #metallicsweatbee this is but it was interesting. Found this guy when I was walking to #class last week at #tccsouthcampus. I had a little bit of #timetokill so I walked through the #vegitable #garden at #school and found this guy on what looks like a #daisy. I have seen many types of #sweatbees they are so named because (and this may sound gross) they are attracted to our #sweat. #inaturalist #nature #insects #wildlife #campuslife

#bees #sweatbees #insect #halictidae #halictus #Abejas

One of the most striking of all our native solitary bees is the Metallic Green Sweat Bee in the genus Agapostemon. Sweat bees have a habit of landing on you while you are working in the garden to drink the salt off your skin, thus the common name of sweat bee. These little bees are excellent pollinators and like many solitary bees, their nests exist within tiny tunnels dug vertically into the shallow soil. Many times when people are tilling their garden they are unwittingly killing native bee larvae. That is why it is important to keep an area of the yard wild and undisturbed for the critters...especially the pollinators! 🐝🐝 . Tomorrow there is a free seminar at @lukasnursery discussing gardening for native bees ( not just honey bees) its 10am if you're interested. . . . #pollinator #bees #solitarybees #sweatbees #vegetablegardening #organicgardening #vegetables #growyourown #eatwhatyougrow #growfoodnotlawns #veggiegarden #homegrown #pollinatorgarden #gradenfriends #floridagardening #dixhitegarden

Just got our bees from the Pollinator Blvd. bee count. First year that the garden is in and we got 11 species of native bees. We will test it again in a couple of years and see how the bee diversity increases. #pollinatorblvd #ifyoubuildittheywillcome #beegarden #honeybees #bumblebbes #diggerbees #sweatbees #leafcutterbees #woolcardebees

👀 Sweat Bee. Primitive Eusocial Bees. They are smaller species. They are often attracted to perspiration hence the name Sweat Bee. They are likely to sting only if disturbed; the sting is minor. All species are pollen feeders and important pollinators. . . . 👉 Photo taken @ Pabna, Northern Bangladesh, Bangladesh. 📷 @kamrulhasanlimon_lub . . . . . . . . #sweatbees #bees #insect #smallbees #beneficialinsect #pollinators #pollination #pollenfeeder #perspiration #nature #naturalbeauty #naturelove #lovenature #natureshots #naturephotography #beephoto #we_love_bee #savethebees #primitiveeusocial #eusocialbees #beautifulBangladesh #photooftheday #picoftheday #bestphoto #pabna #northernbangladesh #bangladesh #walkbangladesh #project_planet

These are Orchard mason bees, male and female. Their progeny are cozied up in Joe "@bee_safari" Dlugo's refrigerator right now, awaiting the first warm days of March. 🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝 It’s hard to believe in the dark of Winter that their emergence could be just a few weeks away. 🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝 #osmialignaria #masonbees #orchardmasonbee #beehotel #bees #honeybees #managedbees #bumblebees #sweatbees #leafcutterbees #pollinators #beefriendly #pollinatorfriendly #pesticidefree #feedthebees

This appears to be Halictus, a sweat bee in the Halictidae, that’s foraging for pollen off of a wild Prunus on lake Mooselookmeguntic in Maine! The wild plants, diverse insects, and the land of lakes calls me back! Though, my brother is there now and said when he landed it was negative thirty degrees! Maybe I’ll wait for summer :) #mainebees #nativebees #halictidae #sweatbees #prunus #wildplants #insectphotography #mooselookmeguntic #mainelakes #bees #travel #eastcoast #halictus #beetaxonomy #rangeley #landoflakes #rangeley #pollinators at Mooselookmeguntic Lake
