I've been promising an update for some time now, so here it goes. Past few weeks i have been working on myself. Growing, learning and becoming the person that god wants me to be. It hasnt been an easy road because i have been struggling to stay consistent and on top of my grind. I realized that working hard doesnt mean going hard without sleep and burning myslef out. But its being efficient and organized so i can get the best work done, not just the most work done. . . Im learning when to rest and self care so i dont burn out. Im learning to manage my mental health when it comes to my 9-5 which is a constant struggle. . But as i take 5 steps forward i always end up going backwards because i let something mess up my consistancy. The good thing about that is, its not 5 steps forward 10 steps back, but more like 5 steps forward and 2 steps back. I am able to catch my mistakes and fix them alot faster. . I've had to go to the dr a few times, nothing serious, at least thats what the dr told me, but i dont have the same fear of anything anymore. Actually the fear is still there, i just dont let it over power me anymore. . I wanna get back to journaling, praying and meditation. I have to fight sleep more than ever because its proving to be an enemy. I wanna wake up early but struggle sometimes to do it. . But this is my update. Im sure i could go on even longer but i wont. When couples come to therapy, the most common thing they tell me is that they want to “improve communication” in their relationship. Often, what they really mean is that they want to get the other person to see things their way and agree with them. 😝 They are looking to change their partner. While change can be positive and is necessary at times, research tells us that as much as 70% of couple’s conflicts are “not resolvable” - meaning that couples typically don’t have much luck getting their partner to agree with them or change in many core conflict areas. So what is the alternative if change is not possible? Acceptance. Acceptance does not mean approval - it does not mean you agree with the person. It means letting go of the anger that goes along with the fight about an issue. Acceptance is not a one time decision - the issue may come up over and over again. Can you believe depression also looks like this? For a long time I wore this smile, but felt the complete opposite inside. No one Would have ever guessed that I didn’t feel well. . . . Due to the fact that I was a new therapist I was also very embarrassed to seek help. I felt like that would deem me a failure, and an unfit practitioner. . . . NOTHING could be farther from the truth. Managing my own mental illness has made me a much better therapist and way more patient with my clients. I couldn’t image life or my career without getting my own assistance at this point. I want to break the stigma, and being open about my own journey, AND struggle is how I choose to empower others. Week One: The Diagnosis - I started out talking about the recent spike I've been feeling in my depression and anxiety. How the timing wasn't a coincidence. Andy went to preschool and suddenly I had all this looming time, and these PLANS, and then...nothing much happened. And I'm lonely. I'm a talker. I spent years of my life talking for hours a day either to friends (and my husband) online, or to coworkers in person. Then Andy was my only company for years. And now...just me. That's something I need to work on, learning to be alone without feeling isolated. - But I'll do here what I did in my session. I will interrupt that train of thought to make sure I say the thing I NEEDED to say. I have this list. I needed to share it. So we paused and refocused, and with nervous speed I ran through the list of things that I thought might be symptoms of undiagnosed OCD. A few things I mentioned, including this gem, made her eyes widen a bit. And I could tell already without her even saying so that I was probably right. And then she showed me an OCD workbook and suggested I order myself a copy. I was right. I said what I needed to say, my instincts were right, and now I know what I'm dealing with and can carve a path forward. - Obviously, I'd rather not have OCD. No part of it is fun. I don't want to waste things!! I try so hard not to do this. To the point of avoiding preparing certain foods I enjoy so that I won't feel compelled to toss perfectly usable objects in the trash. Not. Fun. But some of it IS funny. I chuckled when I said this to her, because on the surface I can see how silly it must sound. And for the most part I'm going to be focusing on that aspect of my sessions, because this process could stand to have a little levity thrown in. So, here we go! Depression, anxiety, PTSD, OCD. Miscellaneous photo drop. Today is a planned recovery day for me, which worked out well because it’s raining outside. I’ve been living on 4-5 hours a sleep per night for the last 2 weeks and explored for 12 hours yesterday on 3 hours of sleep so I slept in today, have laundry to do, going to hit the gym, and I have quite a bit of work to do. Forget about what others have and focus more on how fortunate you should feel to breath, walk, talk, eat, get up in the morning and go on with your day as usual. Stop with the: "if i have this or that, i would be happier" You are guaranteed to feel depressed and sad with this thought process. Social media is filled with people looking for attention, looking to make others feel like they have everything and you have NOTHING. Reality is the complete opposite. If they need to get attention from others by exposing their wealth, they have mental issues and insecurities. Believe me, you don't want that. Feel blessed with what you have and thank G-d everyday that you have the luxury to take the day by the horn and accomplish your dreams. While I try to actively push against gender binary archetypes, I included posts by @_jakewoodard because I am interested in all of the ways that wounding manifests, regardless of identity. ▫️ Our hurt, maltreatment and trauma often wear guises that present somatically, in relation with others, and most importantly, in relation to ourselves. Our reactivity, silencing, distancing, overindulgence, perfectionism, shame, self-criticism, etc. are all likely protecting wounded and suppressed parts of ourselves. ▫️ When our protective factors arise, they can be a sign that our wounding is becoming activated. This is an important time to create inner spaciousness: breathe deeply (ground) and notice emotions in your body (become the witnesser, not the emotion). These moments of pause are where healing lives — they are where healing thrives. ▫️ If your pain could talk, what might it say?
