Today marks the anniversary of 1988's destructive Armenia earthquake, which severely impacted many communities in the northern region of that country, notably the cities of Spitak, Gyumri and Vanadzor. Short in duration, the 20-second, magnitude 6.8 strike-slip event was powerful and shallow, easily toppling poorly-built Soviet buildings that dotted the area. Although estimates vary, it is believed that between 25,000 and 50,000 people lost their lives in the disaster, with up to 130,000 injured. The epicentre was later pinpointed to a fault rupture 40km south of the Caucasus Mountains, in an area marked by the convergence of the Arabian and Eurasian tectonic plates. The Armenia earthquake marked a significant milestone in the thawing of Cold War tensions, as it was the first time that the Soviet government requested outside humanitarian assistance in nearly 50 years. If the rain breaks make sure to take a look at Mt Diablo tonight! ⛰️⛰️ Mount Diablo’s beacon is lit at sunset and shines all night on this single evening each year. The Eye of Diablo Commemorating Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day https://www.savemountdiablo.org/activities/beacon-lighting-pearl-harbor-day/ Every year since 1964, the Pearl Harbor survivors and their families have memorialized Pearl Harbor Day by relighting the historic Beacon atop Mount Diablo’s summit. When those who experienced Pearl Harbor are gone, the history is lost with them. That tragedy should never happen again, “Lest We Forget.” A day that will live in infamy, and in our hearts forever. The Beacon was originally lit by Charles Lindbergh in 1928 to assist in the early days of commercial aviation. The Beacon shined from the summit of Mount Diablo each night until December 8, 1941, the day after the attack on Pearl Harbor. It was not relit until December 7, 1964, when Fleet Admiral Chester Nimitz, Commander in Chief of Pacific Forces during World War II, attended a ceremony on Mount Diablo’s summit in commemoration of the survivors of Pearl Harbor. He suggested that the beacon be lit every December 7th to honor those who served and sacrificed. Since that day in 1964, the Pearl Harbor Survivors Association and now the Sons and Daughters of Pearl Harbor Survivors with co-sponsor Save Mount Diablo have memorialized Pearl Harbor Day by turning on the summit Beacon atop Mount Diablo. The Beacon now shines on that single night each year. On this day 78 years ago in 1941, the Japanese sneak attack on Pearl Harbor and other U.S. bases on Oahu, Hawaii, spurring the U.S. to enter WWII. In a mere hour and 15 minutes, hundreds of Japanese warplanes descended on Hawaii. The Japanese assault destroyed or damaged nearly 20 American naval vessels, including eight battleships, and over 300 airplanes. More than 2,400 Americans died in the attack, including civilians, and more than 1,000 were wounded. #4informeddudes #savemtdiablo #mtdiablo #mtdiablostatepark #pearlharborremembranceday #ThisDayinHistory #sanramonca #eastbay

#NeverForget ❕❕❕ #onAmericansoil Reposted from @zinneducationproject (@get_regrann) - On Dec. 7, 1874, the Reconstruction era “Vicksburg Massacre” occurred in Mississippi, with estimates ranging from 75 to 300 African Americans killed. Whites attacked Black citizens who had organized to defend Peter Crosby. Formerly enslaved and a veteran of the Union army, Crosby had been forced to resign from his elected role as sheriff. #WhiteTerrorism #TeachReconstruction . .
