Asuras (demon gods) in front of the southern gate of Angkor Thom, the Great City. This was the last capital city of the Khmer empire, in present-day Cambodia, established in the late twelfth century by King Jayavarman VII. It covers a square area of 9 km² and is surrounded by a moat and a city wall - more ceremonial than defensive, it seems - with five gates. When passing this southern gate, you only see forest now as almost all (wooden) buildings have disappeared. Only a few structures survived, including the monumental Bayon temple, located exactly in the center of the city. . The Khmer empire at its peak in the 11th to 13th centuries ruled over most of Southeast Asia. Different kings established new temples and capitals in the Angkor region. The temples in this region often combine Buddhist and Hindu elements. Like the Bayon temple itself, the southern gate of Angkor Thom is crowned by tower-like structures on which giant faces are visible, made from carved stones. These faces represent a specific type of bodhisattva, a person on the path towards Buddhahood, called Avalokiteshvara. This type of bodhisattva is variably depicted as either male or female and embodies the compassion of all Buddhas. . A famous Hindu story, the myth of the Churning of the Ocean, is depicted on each side of the causeway giving access to the southern gate, with 54 stone figures on each side. On the left side of the moat, 54 Devas (guardian gods) pull the head of the snake Shesha, while on the right side 54 Asuras (demon gods) pull the snake's tail in the opposite direction. When the Devas pulled the snake in one direction and the Asuras pushed in the other, the ocean began to churn and precipitate the elements. By alternating back and forth, the earth and cosmos were formed anew. . . #angkorthom #asura #cambodia #bayon #buddhism #hinduism #art_creative_pictures #super_art_channel #traveling_arte #fa_sacral #be_one_sacro #world_bestangels #ars_sacra #r_a_d_members #total_sacro #total_statues #talking_statues #fiftyshades_of_history #artemondo #enjoy_arte #art_photogroup #arts_illife #catalogodarte #vivoartworld #artenelmondo #total_artgallery #thehub_art #total_art_gallery
