OFF-SEASON PART 2. . . Many races are continually being cancelled. For those in North America, Spartan has and probably will have to cancel some more upcoming U.S races (just speculation), & today we received word that all Canadian Spartan races have been pushed back (July to October). Instead of looking at this as a negative from a racing/fitness perspective, be positive and see this for what it really is: OFF SEASON PART 2. Just like you wouldn't stop running and training in the winter, you shouldn't stop now. Here are our tips for approaching this extended layoff as a second off season: . . ◾You cannot stay "peaked" from now until October. Return to general fitness preparation/ building. By all means utilize higher intensity work in your training, but return to overall lower training intensity. If you have been pushing very hard to increase volume, consider pulling back slightly to allow your body time to recover. Continue building aerobic fitness and strength which will boost all other efforts. . . ◾Remove high intensity OCR simulations...for now. We're not saying don't run simulations, but remove the highest intensity, pre race sharpening simulations. These are very stressful on the body and it serves no purpose to be sharp NOW for a race in 3 months. . . ◾Consider returning to general strength building and working again on perceived weaknesses. It's not the most fun work to do, but these general strength building sessions are what will keep you healthy all year. . . ◾Although it is fun to do hard workouts, realize that you cannot stay at 100% fitness all year. You do not have "unlimited race peaks" per year. If you decide to go to hard now, you may be toast by the time that late October races rolls around. . . If you have been uncertain about your season or you have simply been allowing this world situation to poison your mind with negativity, this is your second chance. All is not lost. We are actively reworking all of our athletes training to accommodate these changes every day. If you need help getting your mind and body right, we are here for you! #wednesdaywisdom

Fix your lunge! The lunge is one of my favorite exercises to teach. There’s a lot you can do with it: regressing to make it easier for complete beginners or progressing to higher challenges for those with years of experience. Unfortunately, a lotta people do them wrong (especially in group classes or training on your own without any outside feedback on form). I’m all for people moving more, but I don’t want to have to see your fitness progress stopped in place cuz of injury or pain from doing them incorrectly. -Tall posture -Toe, knee, and hip alignment -Heel pressed into the ground -Front thigh parallel to the ground at the bottom of the lunge -Back knee as close to the ground as you can without touching the ground Perfect your lunge and keep moving well through this quarantine! I no longer measure the distance of my runs the same way I don't weigh myself on a scale. And let me tell you, it has made running SO much more fun. I learned to love running when I started training for #ToughMudder in college. Before that, I couldn't run a mile without stopping. So watching myself steadily work up to 12 miles was hugely rewarding. I loved it, even while I screamed at myself in my head to run farther! faster! longer! and suffered feelings of shame and self-disgust when I didn't go as far as I wanted. But my brain still released endorphins, so I still got the feel-good high and heart pumping benefits of physical activity despite the darker thoughts lurking. Race day came and went. I celebrated and rested, then returned to running. But it quickly became clear that I felt the NEED to keep running for something other than enjoyment. Somewhere down the road, I had acquired the belief that the distance I ran each day and the ways my body had changed from doing it were reflections of my worth, proof that I was in fact interesting and impressive and NOT lazy (my biggest fear about myself) This pressure to prove my worth through working out, and to keep from gaining an ounce of weight back sucked a lot of the joy out of an activity that I had started purely for fun. It's possible and honestly super common to have a harmful relationship with something that is objectively healthy/good. This happens when we base our goals and our worth on something outside ourselves. Running can be fun, meditative, and a great way to stay healthy, while also being a source of stress and even self-punishment if someone bases their worth off of it. The pressure might even keep them from running at all. This morning I ran farther than I have in a very long time, simply because I wanted to. There's nothing inherently wrong with measuring things like the distance of a run. I will probably do so again if I decide to train for a race or check purely for curiosity's sake. But paying close attention to how measurements are serving us and whether we are attaching our worthiness as a human beings to the numbers is important if more joyfulness and freedom is what you seek.

I stumbled across this #Epictetus #quote this morning and thought I’d share because I think we can all learn something from it. A month ago, my training area stretched along the unending trails that wind through #Toronto and the 20 or so #GoodLife gyms that dot the city. These days I’m restricted to a 6 x 9 feet jump mat in the middle of my 700 square foot apartment and it’s been driving me bat shit crazy! I’ve just wrapped my first healthy offseason in years. Consistent #YancyCamp sessions through the winter saw my aerobic engine reach levels I don’t think I’ve seen in my entire life. The one race I DID get in this year had me feeling untouchable and I know I had so much more to accomplish this summer. All of that is lost now. #Covid-19 modelling suggests we won’t be racing at all this summer. It sucks to hear, but the only way we get back on a crowded course is if the #pandemic hits all at once, hundreds of thousands die and herd immunity offers enough protection for those of us left behind. That makes #OCR such a tiny priority doesn’t it? It’s life and death stuff and we all need to make sacrifices. “Flattening the curve” will stretch the spread of the virus into the fall. That’s the best we can hope for. That said, it got me thinking… why would I place so much of my focus on something that’s completely out of my control? Don’t get me wrong, we all are angry and we all have a right to grieve for all of what we worked so hard for. There’s a lot of other grieving underway that’s much more relevant right now. So what CAN we control? We can control our thinking. We can control the spread of this devastating sickness. We can make the legitimate decision about whether we want to continue being healthy, thriving members of society. I would argue that all of the above “obstacles” are consistent with everything we’ve all been training for. Let’s recognize and focus on what we CAN control. We’ll all be better for it.
