Jumping, explosive movement...always a work in progress for me. Had some fun with these today! . Why at nearly 54 years old am I working on seated box jumps...or jumping at all? . Short answer: It’s challenging, it’s fun and I want to stay strong and active for many more decades. . Longer answer: One of the ways CrossFit evaluates fitness is through your overall proficiency with 10 General Physical Skills: Endurance, Stamina, Strength, Flexibility, Power, Speed, Coordination, Agility, Balance and Accuracy. Most people are very strong in a few, decent in a majority, and very poor in another few. Not having played any sports growing up and believing I just wasn’t athletic, I came to CrossFit in my mid-40s pretty much poor in all these areas. 😬🤦‍♀️🤷‍♀️ #truestory #askmycoaches . These seated box jumps hit most of the GP skills in one exercise: Accuracy (anyone else a member of the Scraped Shin Club? 🙋), Balance, Agility, Coordination, Speed (got my feet off the ground faster on the last jump), Power for sure. ABS / CORE WORK‼️‼️• • • • I decided to break up this post into 3 different posts. First question that I am most commonly getting is WHAT do I do for core for abs• To start, I need to explain some anatomy for those who don’t know this: you have 3 planes of motion that you move in• 1. Sagittal: splits your body in left & right halves - exercises in this plane are forearm planks, hanging leg raises, & push the pot • 2. Frontal: this splits your body in anterior and posterior halves. Exercises in this plane are side planks, offset farmers carries, & suitcase holds• 3. Transverse: this cuts your body in top and bottom halves. Exercises that classify in this plane are rotational or anti-rotational exercises such as rotating forearm planks!• OKAY so now that you know all that...WHAT do I do for abs/core? I do 2 exercises every day towards the middle/end of my workout training 2 of those planes & making sure that I hit all of the planes of movement during the week. Why do I train core/ abs everyday? Close grip spoto press 5x2 @RPE 8 (120kg) What is this exercise and why am I doing it? Anyone who knows me, speaks to me or even just keeps tabs on my life style would know how busy I am, infact I never quite stop physically and even when I do I generally have kids keeping me on the move (like at 2am when my son wants to explain to me why bananas are yellow) 🍌 one thing I have continued throughout my life since I was 18 is gym, I have actually been a member of a gym for 10 years straight now. Through full time work, full time uni, full time social life, two pregnancies, multiple surgeries the one consistent thing is “gym” although it’s never been something I do to compete with it’s always been something that keeps me grounded, mentally. This is my therapy 🤷‍♀️ sometimes I slack off, sometimes I go hard at it either way I keep coming back. . . I’m studying psychology (yes it’s insane) but the health benefits mentally I now understand with being physically active there is so many endless wonderful things that your brain and body will do. I planned to major in male mental health but I just enrolled in classes for next year both, physiology psychology and sports psychology.
