I’ve been saddened to see MUCH shaming, slandering, and vilifying of creators, particularly in the mental + emotional wellness space b/c they amplify positive energy, spiritually-centered healing, and mind-body perspectives, rather than add to the dysregulation of everyone’s nervous system by being negative + fear-based. While I understand that people operate from the space of their own unhealed trauma and how they feel about themselves, I’m also frustrated that this seems to be the new trend as we navigate uncertain times. I see people I respected jumping on board with the negativity and it’s troubling. Choosing to look for silver linings does NOT equate to having your head in the sand. YES, spiritual bypassing and new age fuckery IS a thing, that requires transmutation, fixing, and returning to grounded reality + inner work, but passive-aggressive posts that target those creating good work, inner peace, and guiding people to positive possibilities is just downright harmful. Yes, people can think for themselves. AND, I think those in healing spaces who assert themselves as experts, therapists and the like, have a responsibility to amplify what IS positive, what is nourishing, and seeking to be curious about other perspectives, rather than shooting them down because it does not align with their idea of reality. Opinions are NOT facts. Truth-telling to stir the pot is not the same as sharing insights to spark introspection. For those posting trauma-informed and healing-based content on IG, there is a sacred responsibility. IG is the canvas, and content creators are the artists. Art, ESPECIALLY during a pandemic where people are valid in freaking the entire fuck out, requires empathy. It requires collaboration. It requires unity. We ALL need to be reminded to focus on the positive possibilities. This is the absolute WORST time in history to be bitter, butt-hurt, or negative because it’s hard to believe that two realities can co-exist. Being careful, having anxiety, and even having fear about our current world does not mean we can’t also be optimistic and search for a deeper, spiritual reason for our current circumstances. So, whatcha reading while in lockdown? 📖 I once cared for a newborn who had a stroke while in utero. Half of his brain was infarcted. He grew up normally, when I met him again later as a young boy, he seemed completely normal with no detectable deficits. We are taught that once we have our adult brains the cells undergo a slow death. Unused areas die. We were taught that only the hippocampus and the olfactory centers regenerate...which is pretty cool-i know I’d love to regrow pathways in my trauma and memory center. But research and experience flies in the face of these teachings-Adult neurogenesis has been seen in three areas of the cerebral cortex: The prefrontal region, which controls decision-making. The inferior temporal region, which plays a role in visual recognition. The posterior parietal region, which plays a role in 3D representation. Pretty cool. We can learn what our triggers are, how to prevent activation, and how to regulate our nervous systems, but we cannot outgrow them. • During a time where so many of our trauma responses are revealing themselves, this is becoming apparent. The fight, flight, freeze, or fawn that comes up as we feel too contained, isolated,or constricted is conditioned into our bodies from development. We see this being highlighted more each day that we’re in quarantine. • However, we can also use this time to truly get to know our nervous systems, how to prevent hyperarousal, and how to bring them down when they get there. As long as we are operating in the 'real world', it'll be difficult to maintain a constant state of awareness. ⠀ ⠀ We may get triggered, fall back into old habits and go through periods of instability. Though it's not about falling back but choosing to get back up and move forward. ⠀ ⠀ Which is why maintaining a daily practice is an act of self love. It helps us stay grounded and connect with our center, helping us come back to our natural state. ⠀ ⠀ Building and maintaining a daily practice used to be a challenge for me. Having once dealt with severe depression I would go through periods where it would be difficult to practice simple acts of self care. Maybe it’s not popular to say that I’m having a hard time with quarantine — but I am. No “positive vibes” are going to turn this bus around until I feel it. ⁣⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣⁣ I’m having a hard time having everybody in my space during the day. I’m having a hard time not being able to play tennis on the tennis court or go to my gym. I’m having a hard time not being able to find groceries, having to wait in a long line to get into Trader Joe’s. I’m having a hard time feeling this all without excess food and booze. I have a no booze in the house rule for myself and I have stuck to it. 🙌🏻⁣⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣⁣ Some would say, “Count your blessings you are well as others are sick.” ⁣⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣⁣ Some would say, “You should feel grateful that you are with your loved ones when others are apart.” ⁣⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣⁣ Some would say, “You are lucky that you get to work from home when others have lost their jobs.”⁣⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣⁣ Make no doubt, I realize how fortunate I am that I am well, quarantined with my loved ones, and have enough money to buy food. I am also grieving freedom. ⁣⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣⁣ I firmly believe it is the suppression of feelings and emotions not expressed, that makes people sick sometimes. It is also this inability to see that all sides — the spectrum of the human experience — can exist at the same time. ⁣⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣⁣ I can feel frustrated, disappointed, angry, and sad as well as hopeful, grateful, happy, and joyful. This is an “and” situation, as most of life is, not an “either/or.”⁣⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣⁣ I am having a really hard time tonight. This is hard. I feel trapped and yet, free, because I do have my loved ones, but sometimes they feel so close I feel like I can’t breathe. ⁣⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣⁣ It is OK to have a hard time. I don’t think it’s OK to cover up having a hard time with “positive vibes only.” That sh*t will make you sick. ⁣⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣⁣ Own your stuff. Honestly. DON’T BELIEVE THE HUSTLE . They say if we don’t come out of this time with a new skill or side hustle to market, we’re doing it wrong. In other words, a global health crisis is being used to amplify the pressure to be productive - at every turn, courses, classes, content are for our taking or making. . Pause for a moment. . The hustle led us to be unrested and unfulfilled. The hustle taught us to ignore our bodies and mental health. The hustle monetized every waking moment - and that was before the world had a million cases of viral strain. Maybe, instead, this is the time to pay attention to the unattended sorrow that a vacant calendar reveals. . Now more than ever, don’t believe the hustle. . The uncertain future feels a lot like grief - an anticipated loss. And so, this is the time to make peace, art, and home wherever possible. Clean, paint, cook, watch, plant and any number of a hundred other variations on coping, but do it to process, not to produce. This is the time for soul work - it can’t be outsourced and won’t be ignored by anything less than tending to a heart that dares to heal. . #dontbelievethehustle

When I wrote Forgotten: Living in the Shadows of Domestic Violence, and even the scripts to these trailers, I had no idea that the state our world would be in today. Domestic Violence has risen 30% since the mandatory lockdown (@time ). These vignettes (this is #2 out 6) are a visual of the internal battle children, teens, and even adults go through living in environments with childhood domestic violence. #cdv ⚡️ The common denominator in both videos in this campaign is that for a child growing up in these homes one of the main instincts is for the child to help the hurting parent and take matters into their own hand. “One of the hardest things for a young person to deal with in that environment is that they don't really know what to call it," said Brian F. Aus meinem Blog: Illusionen, Seelenverwandtschaft und Traumaverarbeitung 🌱 Seit ein paar Tagen bin ich wieder im Traumaland unterwegs. Auf die anfängliche Trennungseuphorie à la "Ich bin frei und kann jetzt tun und lassen, was ich will und mein Leben gestalten!" gepaart mit ganz viel Wut, Trotz und Opferhaltung folgten heftige Trauerwellen und hektische Geschäftigkeit. Ich muss jetzt unbedingt auch ganz schnell glücklich sein mit einem supertollen Leben! Bloß nicht klein beigeben! Mit der therapeutischen Arbeit platzte Illusion um Illusion. Wie Fata Morganas in der Wüste verschwanden immer mehr Dinge, von denen ich all die Jahre geglaubt hatte, sie müssten so sein. Und plötzlich zeigten sich neue Zusammenhänge, die Traumawunde des emotionalen Missbrauchs fing wieder an zu bluten. Das neue Leben muss kurz warten. 🌱 Ich durfte erkennen, dass ich meine Ehe idealisiert habe, dass ich mich in eine Abhängigkeit mit latentem Kontrollverhalten begeben habe, dass es nun nicht mehr nur darum geht, was andere mit mir gemacht haben, sondern was mein Anteil dabei war. In der Traumaverarbeitung ist es natürlich wichtig zu verstehen, was mit einem passiert ist und dass man als Kind nichts dafür konnte. Als Erwachsener weiterhin die Überlebensstrategien zu nutzen, ist jedoch nicht hilfreich und bietet Andockstellen für passende Gegenstücke, um das Trauma zu wiederholen. In einer anderen Intensität vielleicht aber dennoch störend. Auf die einzelnen Zusammenhänge und Wiederholungen möchte ich hier nicht eingehen. 🌱 Und damit komme ich zu einer der Illusionen: Seelenverwandtschaft. Was gibt es wohl Schöneres, als sich so tief mit einem anderen Menschen verbunden zu fühlen? Es ist wie ein nach Hause kommen. Doch was genau bedeutet das? Richtig. Zu Hause bei den Eltern.
