How to be a better listener: 1) Talk less. 2) Hear what’s being said. 3) Suppress your urge to gain understanding through asking questions. . . . Questions are our comfort zone! And if you’re @ampersandlawnc or @mackenzie.smith.dc, you may need to ask specific questions to make sure you are meeting your clients needs. #Juiceworld talked about mental health and admitted it was something that he was working on. He was into drugs that helped him cope with life traumas and died from a drug-induced seizure this past weekend. This could've been prevented. A diagnosis is often just a collection of symptoms that never addresses the real problem, trauma. Dr Van der Kolk worked to get childhood trauma included in the DSM and change the way people with chronic trauma histories are diagnosed, to no avail. In his book, he wonders, “How do we treat people who are coping with the fall out of abuse, betrayal and abandonment when we are forced to diagnose them with depression, panic disorder, bipolar or BPD which do not really address what they are dealing with.” A psychiatric diagnosis has serious consequences; it becomes a prison and the REAL issue is never treated or resolved, the symptoms only medicated. I have experienced this myself while sat in many chairs in many doctors’ offices in a system that is woefully inadequate in recognizing, let alone treating, trauma. Do not become boxed in by your diagnosis and become an outsider or a mere patient in your own treatment. Seems that it must be the season for me to be reflecting on true Selfhood! . I do think that the courage to be our most true selves makes the world a better place for everyone. Today was a “do nothing” self-care, rest day for me and I didn’t even have to get “dressed,” put on make-up, or even leave the house...except to go get acupuncture as another act of self-care. 🌟💥🌈⚡️✨ • After a lifetime of believing that I NEEDED to be productive to excel and to move ahead (or to even feel worthy), which by the way was a trauma response - and it did serve me VERY well for a long time - it no longer serves me and is actually now detrimental to me, my health, and my family. • I have healed to the point that I now know (most days) that I am worthy just because I am. I need to do nothing for it. And I can also rest in the space (most days) that all is working in my favor and everything I need will always find its way to me. I am finally learning to truly RECEIVE (most days), which has been very difficult/foreign for me in the past (again, a trauma response). It is becoming more familiar to me as I vibrate on that level more and more.💥💥💥 • I am moving into a new way of BEing and aligning for the next 1/2 of my life and it feels good. • I still love to be productive and to crush goals and I have many projects and passions on my path and on the horizon (which mostly involve teaching others that healing is possible and that they can heal themselves). However, it is from a much different, soul-aligned energy and space now...and one in which I take care of myself as a priority FIRST. And when I mess up, I offer myself grace and compassion and I start again. I must practice what I preach. 🙌🏼🥰💥♥️ • Won’t you join me on this self-care, self-healing, self-loving journey?!? Wellness and healing practices can get tricky. While most of the things are good and healthy most of the time, the healing journey can also become guilt-inducing. ⁣ ⁣ Sometimes it can feel like we are not “doing enough” or “doing it right" if we're not reading all the books, listening to all the podcasts, meditating for hours daily, checking off everything on our self-care to-do list, or journaling daily. ⁣ There’s nothing wrong with any of those things. But consciously choosing to PACE things is equally important as DOING the things. Sometimes “doing the work” might mean getting out of bed and getting through the day. Not everyone has the luxury to be able to take breaks.
