During the stay-at-home, many of us wish we were anywhere but home. I know I especially wish I was out shooting in Big Bend. I had to cancel my trip this month. @montopolis is sharing songs from their performance “Legend of Big Bend” on their YouTube channel so people can take a virtual trip to @bigbendnps. This song is typically performed by a live orchestra, and these photos are usually gigantic on a movie screen behind them. But we have to take what we can get right now, right? Some of these photos have never been seen before, and represent five years of photographing West Texas. • • • #VisitTexas #TexasToDo #shareyourtexas #livetexan #texasliving #lonestarstate #texastourism #texaspride #texaslove #texasproud #texas #texasyall #texasforever #texaslife #igtexas #texas_ig #igtexas #westtexas #instagramtexas #igtx #snaptexas #texasphotographer #terlingua #TMwanders #bigbendnationalpark #bigbend #bigbendnps #terlinguaghosttown #traveltexas #texastravel

Hey everyone! This is Kara, she is a 9 year old representative of Girl Scout Troop #130347. COVID 19 has hit right in the middle of their cookie selling season. Instead of allowing this virus to shut them down they have used this as an opportunity to spread cheer! These ladies raised money to purchase cookies which they have brought to us to pass out to truck drivers! They wanted to thank the drivers for working so hard to help keep our nations supplies moving! Thank you Troop 130347 and thank you truck drivers of America! Why are Ladybugs such an amazing site to see when working in the vineyard? 🐞 ANSWER: Ladybugs, or lady beetles, are considered a beneficial bug which helps rid an area of crop-damaging aphids, mealybugs and other destructive insect pests. Keeping up our showcase of local restaurants, we continue with one of our favorites! ⁣ ⁣ @sjbakery has been a staple in Corpus Christi for decades. They have the best kolaches in Texas; from their ham & cheese (personal favorite), sausage & cheese, and regular and jalapeño hogs in a blanket, to their delicious cinnamon rolls and sweet kolaches. They've been a local favorite, with lines out the door everyday to get boxes and bags full of deliciousness. They also have amazing sandwiches and burgers, as well as daily lunch specials from chicken fried steak, taco salad, and more. ⁣ ⁣ Susan & Jason have been pillars in the Coastal Bend community. They remain loyal to their patrons and even in these hard times, they continue to do all they can to serve their customers and keep their employees working and paid. If you can, make sure you stop by for either breakfast or lunch Monday through Friday to support this local restaurant during this trying time. ⁣ ⁣ If you have a restaurant you want featured, check out our last original post and comment your favorite restaurant to share with everyone and for a chance for it to be featured on our page.

County's First Nurse Honored "To celebrate National Professional Nurses Week, the nurses at Matagorda General Hospital Tuesday reverently hung a photograph of Genevieve Sharpless Morton, the first nurse in Matagorda County, on the walls of the hospital alongside those of doctors who have played a significant role in county medical history. The deceased Morton became the first nurse to receive this honor. In addition to being the first professional nurse in the county, when she came to the county in 1914 she was the only nurse in the county's first hospital. She came with Dr. Claude P. Jones with the idea that she would remain for three months and would assist Dr. Jones in establishing a hospital. She remained for the rest of her life as she married Dr. A. S. Morton of Bay City. Dedicated to her profession, she worked 18 to 21 hours a day in the hospital at 2400 Avenue F in what was known as the Rugeley building. That facility is an apartment unit today. Her photograph was hung with much pride Tuesday afternoon by Abbie Taylor, director of nursing services at Matagorda General Hospital, and Jan Johnson, critical care coordinator." The Daily Tribune, Wednesday, November 10, 1982

INGRAM, IRA (1788–1837). Ira Ingram, soldier, legislator, and member of Stephen F. Austin's Old Three Hundred, was born in Brookfield, Vermont, on August 19, 1788, the son of Phillip and Rachael (Burton) Ingram. After sojourning for a time in Tennessee he seems to have moved to New Orleans, where he married Emily B. Holt of Tennessee on March 13, 1823; she died in October 1824. They had one daughter. At the instigation of his brother Seth Ingram, Ira moved to Texas in January 1826 and settled in the Austin colony in the area that became Waller County. In 1828 he and his brother were partners in a merchandising establishment in San Felipe de Austin. Although defeated by Thomas M. Duke in the election for alcalde in 1832, Ingram represented the Mina District at the Convention of 1832 and San Felipe in the Convention of 1833. He also served as secretary of the local committee of public safety, organized to resist Mexican Centralist authority. In 1834 he was elected the first alcalde of Matagorda and wrote the Goliad Declaration of Independence, signed on December 22, 1835. During the Texas Revolution Ingram participated in the capture of Goliad as commissary and secretary to commandant Philip Dimmitt. In November 1835 he requested a transfer from Stephen F. Austin. He served in Capt. Thomas Stewart's company of Matagorda Volunteers in 1836. On April 5, 1836, Gen. Sam Houston ordered Ingram, then commissioned as a major, to return to East Texas and the United States to recruit volunteers for the Texas army. Ingram was Matagorda representative in the First Congress of the Republic of Texas and was elected speaker of the House. He resigned from the legislature on May 1, 1837, possibly because of the disclosure that he had once been convicted of forgery and imprisoned in New York. He was again elected mayor of Matagorda, but died on September 22, 1837, before his inauguration. Ingram was present at the first meeting of the Masonic fraternity in Texas on January 11, 1828. In his will he left $70,000 to the Matagorda schools.- TSHA

Holman-Allen Home in Bay City On the corner of Avenue K and Third Street, at 2504 Avenue K in Bay City, Matagorda County, Texas, stands the Victorian home begun in 1908 and completed in 1909 by architect A. E. Large for Judge and Mrs. William Shields Holman. Mr. H. Speckles was the contractor, a Mr. Miller the wall paper contractor and Mr. Leopard the concrete contractor. The home, eight blocks from the Court House Square, is three stories in height with a two story carriage house in the back and occupies one quarter of Block 143, Lots 7, 8, and 9, one hundred fifty feet fronting on Avenue K, one hundred forty feet on Third Street, with twenty feet for an alley. In 1894 David Swickheimer, of Dolores County, Colorado, was sole owner of the townsite of Bay City. Lots 7, 8 and 9, Block 143 are a part of the east half of the original townsite, consisting of 320 acres of land out of the western portion of Survey No. 3, Block No. 4 of the I.&G.N.R.R. Company lands in Matagorda County. On July 1, 1897 David Swickheimer deeded, among other property, Lots 7, 8 and 9, Block 143 to N. M. Vogelsang; on February 17, 1898 this property was deeded by N. M. Vogelsang to M. E. Gibson (Gipson); on March 12, 1903 M. E. and Dora M. Gipson executed a Warranty Deed in favor of H. B. Kaulbach; H. B. Kaulbach on March 24, 1903 deeded the property to W. S. Holman; who on December 30, 1926 deeded it to is wife, Louise Kaulbach Holman. At the death of Louise Kaulbach Holman on May 15, 1960, this property was inherited in equal shares by her five children: Jonathan Lane Holman, who died April 3, 1975; William Shields Holman, Jr., who died March 26, 1975; Louise Holman Miller, Berkeley Watt Holman and Thomas Andrew Holman. In 1961 Andrew Holman purchased one-fifth interest each from Berkeley Matt Holman and William Shields Holman, Jr.; Thomas A. Holman now owning three-fifths interest. On January 8, 1976 the estate of Jonathan Lane Holman sold one-fifth interest to George A. Miller, Jr., who on April 21, 1977 sold his interest to Louise Holman Miller who then owned two-fifths interest in the property. During the early days of Anglo-American colonization in Texas, the Matagorda Bay prairie area was an important route for people traveling between settlements. A convenient river crossing was a necessity, and a ferry was established on the Thomas Cayce League of Land near this site. Known as Cayce’s Ferry, the site was garrisoned by a small army post. In January 1839 George Elliott (1806-1862) purchased land on the west bank of the Colorado River from Thomas Cayce, and from that time the ferry crossing was known as Elliott’s Ferry. George Elliott was assisted in his endeavors by two nephews, William Elliott and John Elliott, who continued the ferry business after George Elliott’s death. By 1863 a small settlement had grown up around Elliott’s Ferry. A small mercantile business and a post office known as Elliott’s Ferry, Texas, were in operation in 1872. In 1893 the post office name was changed to Elliott, Texas, and a year later was moved to Bay City. In 1902, a bridge was built over the Colorado River two miles northwest of Bay City. Known as the “Old River Bridge,” its completion resulted in the demise of Elliott’s Ferry. Photo: Waymarking.com

Hensley-Gusman Home By Kathleen Tatum- 1993 A beautiful old house known to all as "The Gusman Home," is located at 2120 6th Street, on Lot #7 and east half of Lot $8, in Block #146, in the original townsite of the City of Bay City. Mr. A. D. Hensley, district clerk of Matagorda County from 1923 to 1936, bought the land from David Swickheimer by Attorney G. M. Magill on January 13, 1898. In 1905, the Alamo Lumber Company agreed to furnish Mr. A. D. Hensley and his wife, Maggie B. Hensley, all the necessary lumber and other materials to erect the three bedroom house for $930. Mr. Hensley asked his brother, who was an architect, to plan a house that would catch the breeze from any direction. The house is a Greek Cross, hexagonal-designed house. A one story frame, gable-roofed structure of Greek Cross plan with five octagonal rooms, and four cross halls; four hexagonal entrance porches have delicate turned posts and hipped roofs. The living room has eight doors and no windows. Transoms are over the four outside doors. Three of these doors open to hexagon porches, one of the porches is screened. Originally the fourth door opened to a large screened porch extending the full length of the back part of the house. After indoor plumbing was available in Bay City, a bathroom was made from a portion of the porch. Later another section was used to enclose a water heater. The inside doors lead to three bedrooms and the dining room. From the dining room, one enters the kitchen and to the back entrance. The bathroom is entered from the kitchen or the screened porch. All rooms, except the kitchen and bathroom, are octagonal shaped. Two bedrooms have five windows and one door. The third bedroom opens onto the back screened porch, so there are only four windows. There are no clothes closets in two of the bedrooms, only large beautiful wardrobes to hold the clothes. The house has a total of nineteen windows. All the rooms have ceilings that are 11 1/2 feet tall. The only outside physical change was the replacement of the two front wooden porches with concrete, which required removal of the banisters. James Robert Gusman (March 3, 1862 - November 30, 1944) and Bettie Amand

Sometimes the subject in a photograph is obvious and other times the subject can be abstract. It could be a mood or emotion conveyed in the photo. Or in the case of this image, the subject could be the light itself. While this location was incredible, its so difficult to find a composition that shows you just what you're looking at--its very hard to convey a subject. So I decided the warm reflected light entering the slot would be my subject, and what a fine subject! SAN ANTONIO: Mariachi and Margaritas!! #texasroadtrip April 2015 We were in San Antonio for Easter weekend which was particularly busy as traditionally large numbers of Mexicans visit for Semana Santa (Holy Week). The city is famous for The Alamo and its Riverwalk. We also visited the Buckhorn Saloon & Museum where when the salon originally opened customers were given a free beer or whisky shot for every pair of deer antlers they brought in. We experienced our first basketball game watching San Antonio Spurs versus Golden State Warriors. Spurs won. "No matter how chaotic it is, wildflowers will still spring up in the middle of nowhere." - Sheryl Crow Today is the start of our spring break and we were supposed to be in Shenandoah National Park. Well thats now parked for another day, instead sharing today a memory from our last year's spring break in Texas. The picture here is from Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower center in Austin, TX and features the Texas state flower - Blue Bonnet! As an extension of Lady Bird Johnson's (the wife of the 36th President of the United States, Lyndon B. Johnson) efforts at highway beautification in United States, she encouraged the planting of native plants along Texas highways after she left the White House. Bluebonnet blooms are now a common sight along these highways in the springtime. The fields bloom for about 6 weeks, from March till mid April. The peak season is usually in April. There are several places where you can see a huge amount of beautiful Texas Bluebonnets. -> -> -> -> #springvibes #springflowers #spreadpositivity #beautifuldestinations #ilovetravel #openmyworld #passportable #travelawesome #welltravelled #justtravel #travelmore #explore #sheisnotlost #travelifiication #visualambassadors #discoverunder5k #thewanderingtourist #girlsaroundworld #girlsborntotravel #femmetravel #dametraveler #citizenfemme #texas #bluebonnets #texasstateflower #natureenthusiast #naturelover #traveltexas #igerstexas #austintx
