Heute fühl ich mich inspiriert beim #autorensonntag von @justine_thereadingmermaid mitzumachen. Thema #verantwortung Dazu passt Little Women ausgezeichnet. #books #bookstagram #germanbookstagram #schreiben #schreibtipp #schriftstellerin #autorin #autorenaufinstagram #littlewomen #bias #stereotypen #unconsciousbias #denglisch #vorurteile #weneedmorediversebooks #badboy #klischée #klischeefreiekinderbücher

This is on my mind a lot. I see loads and loads of therapists, mental health advocates, holistic practitioners and healers speaking up about equity in this field. Guess what - none (or at least very few and I haven't come across them yet) are white. I see a huge booming wellness industry dominated by white people and endless #spiritualbypassing and #lightwashing. In search for #culturalawarenessinmentalhealth and the tag is pretty much EMPTY. I was peering through journal articles about the effectiveness of types of therapy...but when I did a breakdown of the results most of the studies had been done on white people. What the hell is going on?! I attended a zoom webinar by @diveinwell the other day and it was FANTASTIC. This quote comes from Constanza Eliana Chinea @eliana.chinea , who spoke at the event and blew me away. I sat, I listened and I was humbled by what I heard. We HAVE to do better. We HAVE to investigate the bias within our field, within ourselves and the structures that we work in, and white therapists/healers/teachers we HAVE to start talking about it.

My ma tells me that this was taken one Eid when I was around 4 yrs old. We weren’t Muslims but my mother celebrated each festival no matter what the religious association. One of our closest family friends were Muslims and my father thought of her as his own sister. She would come and tie Rakhi on my father’s wrist at Rakshabhandan and we would always celebrate Eid with them. My father would give all the children ‘Eidee’ and my ma would make sweet sewai. I studied in a Catholic school and we had a tree on Christmas since as long as I can remember. This was the true spirit of secular India for me, and I am in awe of my mother who really encouraged a spirit of inclusivity in all her children. Now as I see the country breaking at the seams divided more than ever it makes me so depressed and disappointed. But I try and remember the way we grew up, and I try and do the same for my children. And I have been so enjoying @asmakhanlondon posts about Eid. 'People cannot get enough of talking about unconscious bias. Many organisations and individuals who speak of their commitment to true and deep diversity and inclusion are utterly enamoured with unconscious bias training; seeming to see it is the silver bullet we’ve all been waiting for, *the* solution for racism, sexism, homophobia, transphobia, classism, disablism and other oppressions. . The word bias conjures up a leaning — rolls of the dice, simple preferences. It’s a safe, innocuous and neutral term. In being so safe and sterilised — it does not capture in any way the myriad ways certain people suffer as a result of inequities and exclusion, every single day. And therefore, I worry, creates no urgency for change.' Sara Shahvisi and Hanna Naima McCloskey via @fearlessfutures. . . . Read the article in full over on our resources page. It's an excellent one! 📸 @fearlessfutures #bias #unconsciousbias #racism #sexism #homophobia #transphobia #classism #disablism #inclusion #representation #workplace #design #DesignCan

🙋🏻‍♀️ Ever been called “difficult”? Ever thought to yourself that you were just being proactive and assertive, and it seems like all such women are labeled “difficult”? Last week I was operating and one of the techs very vocally complained about another plastic surgeon who performs breast reconstruction. I remember thinking to myself, jeez this is really unprofessional and awkward. You shouldn’t talk about another surgeon in a negative capacity in front of me and the breast surgeon. She called this other female plastic surgeon “difficult”, said she had an “attitude”... you know, things that qualify a #nastywoman. I then thought about every interaction I’ve had with this other surgeon, none of which have been negative. Looking back I’m disappointed I didn’t speak up in defense of her. I should have said something. Well you know what’s just so fantastic?? I then get feedback that this same tech complained about me, to the same surgeon she had just spoken poorly about, hours later!! Same set of complaints, I’m difficult and have an attitude etc. If you’re a surgeon who happens to be a woman and you have any standards or requests, you’re “difficult”, “rude” and have an “attitude”. Well this Nasty Woman is here to tell you that 1) Feedback works best when you give it directly to the person it concerns. Was I objectively being difficult or was that the perception due to unconscious bias? Talk to me about it. Otherwise it’s called trash talking. Please be advised the latter is not recommended. 2) If you have problems with multiple women and think you have one shred of professionalism or credibility when you openly talk poorly of many females, look within honey boo boo. So tired of women who tear down other women. #struggleisreal. Also shoutout to my 8th floor baddies whom I adore and love working with! You, ladies and gents, share my passion to be the absolute best every single day and I thank you for your support in all things #microsurgery. . . #nastywomenunite #womenempowerment #womensupportingwomen #ilooklikeasurgeon #mask #thoughts #doctor #desidoctor #brownskingirls #tamilstatus #implicitbias #unconsciousbias #perception #reality #nottoday

#MyEDSChallenge Day 21: Raising Awareness . There’s this critical balance that lies between folks experiencing chronic illness and disability and folks who have never experienced anything like it — a give and take. . It’s not fair to ask someone who has more to overcome to take on the emotional and mental labor all the time: to explain, to make you believe, to seek your allyship, and to make you understand. But when you have folks who are willing to learn and listen, it’s easier to take the time to do so, when you have the energy. . We’re all on our own journeys, be it with confronting ableism or any other unconscious bias like racism, sexism, ageism, etc. Doing a lot of the work yourself is necessary: you can google, read, and learn. Sometimes you might need to ask for help or a direction, and realize when you do it’s off the labor of someone else, who often has suffered from those biases. The best thing you can do is accept what they say, thank them, and keep learning from it. . Thanks for sticking with me to have these conversations and learn a bit more about EDS, even if it’s through only my own scope. I’m here as a resource for you and hope it provides you with a point of contact when you most need it in your own journey of discovery, on any of the things I’ve touched on. Awareness is power. 🦓 . #cEDS #EDS #HSD #ZebraStrong #RainbowZebra #EhlersDanlosSyndrome #Allyship #Ableism #ImplicitBias #UnconsciousBias #ChronicIllness #DisabledAndCute

My #SKJHomeBook series is back! ⁣ ⁣ I’m starting off with this gem - The Person You Mean to Be by @Dolly.Chugh (@HarperCollins) ⁣ ⁣ Unconscious bias is a difficult conversation in itself because we typically feel that if we have any bias, we aren’t good people.⁣ ⁣ Well, Dolly Chugh redefines being a good person as someone who acknowledges and learns from their biases as well as actively works to be better. ⁣ ⁣ By seeing ourselves this way, we are employing a growth mindset aligned with the attitude that we are a “work in progress” - which is critical to our growth and development! ⁣ ⁣ This strategy is particularly impactful for leaders who want to do better and lead more INCLUSIVE-ly 😉⁣ ⁣ If you want to measure your own unconscious bias, you can take the Implicit Association Test (IAT) at ⁣ ⁣ https://implicit.harvard.edu/implicit/takeatest.html ⁣ ⁣ as mentioned in her book! ⁣ ⁣ Do you think everyone has an unconscious bias, yes or no? ⁣ ⁣ Either way, just let me know below 👇🏽 😏⁣ ⁣ (I guess you didn’t know it, but I’m also a poet, lol 😂)

#fridayintroductions ➡️ I'm a naturopathic doctor practicing in East Gwillimbury, Ontario (which is a lovable gem of a town). My practice has a strong focus on mental health - especially anxiety. That means I also spend a lot of time helping my patients with related issues like insomnia, digestive issues, hormonal problems and skin issues. I'm not a health extremist which means you won't find me recommending rigid diets and mountains of supplements. You will find me crafting plans for my patients that are health transforming but also reasonable, well rounded and rooted in science. I love hiking, watercolour painting, history, spirituality and devouring fantasy books and movies (favourite author - C.S. Lewis). My parents are from the West Indies and I was born and raised in Newmarket, Ontario. I love my Indian 🇮🇳, Indo-Caribbean 🇬🇾 and Canadian 🇨🇦 traditions. I've been married for 2 years to the best husband ever and we live in North York (but are thinking of moving back to York Region ❤️). Issues that get me particularly riled up: fast fashion, unfair trade, excessive consumerism, throw away culture, unconscious racial biases and global + local gaps in health care. I'm an introvert but I love the amazing, meaningful one on one interactions I get to have with my patients every day in my work! #hollandlanding #eastgwillimbury #eastgwillimburynaturopath #fairtrade #westindian #fantasy #unconsciousbias #introvert #healthcare

As leaders we are always under construction, it is our responsibility to bring together all the people involved and make them a priority. Leading a productive, innovative, quality minded multi-generational, multicultural and diverse team in an evolving workplace and marketplace is far more complex than ever before. This is where Cross- Cultural Leaders role starts. Smart leaders know that cross-cultural competence drives organizations revenues and success. It is the ability to influence people who are not like you, coming from different cultural backgrounds. To succeed, you need to have a global mindset, tolerate high levels of ambiguity, and show cultural adaptability, flexibility., and most of all acceptance

I was proud to work with Cosmopolitan magazine on this feature about the #genderhealthgap . I'm pleased that they focused on #unconsciousbias Unconscious bias is a really important area of work that the healthcare industry needs to tackle to ensure that everyone gets the care they need. . Diagnosis, investigation and treatment should not be affected by unconscious bias based on gender, race, ethnicity etc. . As a psychiatrist working in liaison services (the interface between physical and mental health services) I often have to advocate for my patients to receive further physical health investigations and treatment. This is particularly for women who's symptoms are attributed to stress and anxiety. . Now stress and anxiety does play a big part in physical illness too, in fact it would be odd if someone who was in hospital didn't feel a bit anxious right? So it is important that we don't attribute all symptoms to mental health. . This seems to disproportionately affect women - pain for women is often seen as normal - as the article states "Periods hurt. Sex hurts. Menopause hurts. And if you can't tolerate that, then there's something wrong with your mind, not your body" . There's tons of research on erectile dysfunction yet hardly any on women's pain during sex. (A very highly reported symptom). Why do we value men's pleasure more than women's comfort? . I hope we can change things with more women working in science and by recognising and challenging our biases. . #thementalhealthdoctor #womensproblems #genderhealth #healthgap #equality #bias #itsallinyourhead #stress #anxiety #comorbidity #diagnosticovershadowing #psychiatry #medicalfeminism

COVID Chronicles Day 67: Attended my first Women @microsoft Texas symposium, and there were 233 women, womxn and allies online at one point! Nina Irani, President and CEO of UniqueSpeak, spoke to the theme of the @unwomen 2020 initiative - Generation Equality: Realizing women’s rights for an equal future. Ms. Irani’s talk was strong, compassionate, inclusive, full of immediate takeaways, and with plenty of time for active Q&A via Teams. - A lot of the talk and conversation after centered on bias, unconscious or conscious, implicit or explicit. Bias comes from faulty information, so the only way to counter it is objectively, with fact. I really liked the advice to evenly question biased speech and behavior, and to be brave about calling it out on behalf of colleagues and allies. In other words, we can overcome blind spots by adjusting our mirror and/or helping others adjust theirs, by asking simple questions that let people explain themselves. - “Interesting, what do you mean by that?” “I’d like to hear ____ finish their thought.” “Wait, I have not finished my thought.” “Yes, and I admire her passion around the topic.” “Thank you for sharing, but I’d like to show a different perspective.” “I value your presence on the team, and I want you to value mine.” “This is important, new, useful.” - Even, firm, even, firm. It’s interesting how life “happens”. First the @naacp filed a discrimination claim against @americanair.. next, as an employee of the company.. i was dumbfounded as to how a claim could be made seeing as American wins #DiversityAndInclusion awards practically every year. But then a good friend, @shaewarren notified me that American was hiring trainers to host #UnconsciousBias facilitations.. You see, we can get into debates as to what happened and if racism will ever be eradicated... but the bottom line is that I was able to stand in the gap, shine light, and provide perspective.. and subsequently lives were impacted. Today is #WORLDDAYFORCULTURALDIVERSITY that Recognize cultural diversity and differences as a source of innovation, exchange and creativity, as well as the obligation to create a more peaceful and equitable society based on mutual respect. It doesn’t take any effort to love the people that are just like us, that talk, think, act or dress like us, people that have the same values and beliefs as we do. But we do not feel the same about people that are DIFFERENT than we are, people we do not agree with, whom we consider making wrong poor choices ,basically judging them, it becomes very easy to put them and lock them in a box and say THEY are not like me; so I will keep my distance. We write people off just because they are different, because they are not meeting our standards, we do not agree with their lifestyle, their doctrines, values, beliefs, principles or friends that have chosen. We judge ourselves by our intentions but judge others by their actions But really. Who are we to judge anyone? #diversitymatters

Tensions are running a bit high right now - at home and in the workplace (which is basically one in the same these days).🤔 . Fear and uncertainty can trigger judgement and misinterpretations. According to this piece in the Harvard Business Review, “When we’re under severe stress, we go back to coping patterns that are familiar and very hardened in us, and we have a hard time seeing that there’s any other way to do what we’re doing. We think we’re right and others are wrong.” . It is in the time where compassion and understanding are needed this most. Also, be generous in your interpretations of others when they send a terse email or look grumpy on a video call. It’s more than likely that their mood has nothing to do with you or work. Do your part by being honest about what you’re feeling at the moment and clearly communicating your needs. And remember that your coworkers are likely suffering in ways that you don't see or necessarily understand. Don't try to compare suffering. Instead, lean into compassion, empathy, and kindness. — Adapted from “What Your Coworkers Need Right Now Is Compassion,” by Amy Gallo. Artist credit: Digital Zoo/Getty Images.

They say the only difference between a weed and a flower is judgement... As much as this time has brought a lot of community spirit out, people supporting one another, it has also brought about a whole load of judgement. We are so influenced by our unconscious biases, it can be really hard to pick up on the judgements we make. We need unconscious biases for our minds to work, but we also need to challenge ourselves on them. None of us know the whole story based on what we see on the outside. See if you can catch yourself next time you make a snap judgment, what do you think has influenced that judgement? Would you mind if your child picked up on that bias? Is it a bias that helps you or is it one you could try to work on? #unconsciousbias #nonjudgemental #nojudgement #wildflowersorweeds #dandelions #wishes #weedsareflowerstoo

The Struggle is REAL. 👏 A few months ago we partnered with My True Self to launch The Physiology of Inclusion™ to support DEI leaders in restoring their health and being physically prepared for the challenges that come their way. It seems that now more than ever this is of utmost importance for ALL leaders, in and outside of DEI work. This clip comes from our public Virtual Learning Lab in February in which we introduced The Physiology of Inclusion™ as a tool to incorporate intentional healthy practices into your toolkit and discussed how your organization can support you in managing the emotional, mental, and physical toll of this work. Check out the whole recording and key takeaways at the link in our bio! . . . . #TheWintersGroup #LiveInclusively #LeadInclusively #diversityandinclusion #diversitytraining #inclusiontraining #ThePhysiologyofInclusion #culturalcompetency #culturalcompetence #unconsciousbias #culturaldiversity #socialchange #yourpower #diversityconsultant #shifttheculture #purposefulliving #holistichealthcoach #holisticliving #holisticwellness #holisticnutrition #WintersGroupVLL #webinar #webinars #learninglab #Onlinelearning #onlineeducation #doingthework

Hola! Osemhen here, and for the first time ever, I’m hosting a free webinar discussing something close to my heart: navigating gender bias as a woman in corporate Nigeria. I know there’s bias, you know there’s bias. Whether you’re a young woman just entering the workforce or a new mother returning from maternity leave, the bias, often unconscious, can make it super hard for you to make any progress. On Saturday, I’ll be sharing almost a full decade’s worth of lessons and experiences, fails and wins. This isn’t a pep talk on visibility or career plans (they’re important too, don’t get me wrong). But beyond the usual career buzzwords, there are pretty foundational things like preparedness and luck, surrounding yourself with the right people and knowing your trade-offs, obsessing over the right things and picking your character over your brand. I’m doing this for all the women who are working hard but sense that there’s something invisible in their way, those who worry that being a mum makes their boss think they’re less committed, those who see themselves being passed up for opportunities just because they’re female or mothers. 🤯 If you’re ready to go beyond just a career plan or a life audit, I’d love to share what’s worked for me and the results I’ve had. Let’s see if I can help you a bit more, beyond the DMs 😃😃 Link’s in our bio to register for free. #blazersandbaby #careerwomen #biascorrect #genderbias #unconsciousbias #womenatwork #watchmework

“The pandemic provides a significant opportunity to increase our awareness about diversity, and to expand our capacity for empathy and compassion toward members of our whole community. This is important for people, but also for a company’s results. Whether you’re an individual who wants to be a better ally or an organization challenged with ensuring you tap into the best talent, you can get educated, include those who are different than yourself, build trust, expand the way you accommodate work, support people holistically and ensure a seat at the table. We will get through the pandemic together and if we take the right steps, we can have a powerfully positive impact on a future which includes more diversity, equity and inclusion.” https://www.forbes.com/sites/tracybrower/2020/05/19/diversity-equity-and-inclusion-what-the-coronavirus-teaches-and-how-we-must-respond/ #5c77f8114d05 #CST #cultureshiftteam #cultureshift #unconsciousbias #diversity #inclusion #culture #culturalchange #platinumrule #multiculturalmarketing #hispanic #hispanicmarketing #multiculturallens #publicrelations #diversitybreakthrough #anngillespie #robertlwilson #marcelagomez

We are really looking forward to our next pilot @feministcoachacademy class. This one will be taught by @leesareneehall and is on unconscious bias and coaching.⠀ ⠀ Leesa is an author, anti-bias facilitator, and social historian. She has helped over 30,000 leaders unpack their unconscious biases using her signature process called The Contemplative Methodology ™.⠀ ⠀ Author of ten books, including Unpack Biases Now, a workbook designed to help leaders questions their implicit biases so they can create truly equitable and inclusive teams, Leesa was known as a technology pioneer before turning her attention to disrupting the misinformation hardcoded deep in the mind.⠀ ⠀ We and Feminist Coach Academy members are looking forward to applying Leesa’s teachings to our own businesses, work and client practice!⠀ ⠀ It’s not too late to join the class. In fact we are offering $100 off the class this month via LINK IN BIO.⠀ ⠀ If you haven't already tuned in, we also have an episode on the Feminist Coach Academy podcast featuring an old interview I did with Leesa on writing, activism and being a sensitive human too.⠀ ⠀ Tune in via our website, Spotify or iTunes.

Repost! @drrichorbeaustin 👌✌️👫👬🗣️🗣️ Genuine commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion starts with creating an environment where all voices are heard and a sense of belonging is developed, so that people from diverse backgrounds feel seen & heard. It is not about solely paying lip service to these issues, but rather working hard and through difficult moments, to deepen cultural learning and to sustain an inclusive workplace, for all employees to be able to thrive. What can an experiment with cats and dogs tell us about negative stereotypes in children? I have been thinking a lot of how children form prejudicial attitude especially as I have been spending so much time at home with mine. I think this is a time when we as parents can have a huge influence on how our children consider others and outside world, especially as their world has become so small, and they are less likely to see and hear different kinds of people. This experiment, that I talk about, shows that children can form some fixed categories and views from a very young age. And as I talk about in SWAY how developmental psychology research has shown that biases are learnt, and children have a natural desire to form in-group/out-group definitions in order to form a better sense of their own identity. So what can we do to help our children form a less prejudicial view of the world? . . . . #unconsciousbias #implicitbias #raisingchildren #honestmotherhood #parenting #motherhoodunplugged #motheringduringcovid19 #parentingduringapandemic #motherhoodrising #Swaybook #bloomsburypublishing #pragyaagarwal #motherswhowrite #shatteringstereotypes #biasfreeclassrooms

It is so easy to neglect the self, especially if you have never felt valued, loved, protected, nurtured and enough.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ BUT—as grown ass adults, it is time to STOP making excuses for why we continue to perpetuate NOT taking care of the self.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ This week, make sure to take time out to LOVE you. That might mean going to bed an hour early, reading a book, taking a bath, or making yourself some chicken soup. It might mean meditating, journaling, or watching that movie you’ve been meaning to watch, or it might mean finally catching that Yoga class you’ve been meaning to try out.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Inside all of us is a KNOWING.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ We know what we need and what we want, but when we are in the habit of IGNORING what we KNOW to be true, our actions follow suit, our life sucks, we feel like crap, and we fall into ruts that grow deeper each passing day.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ This week make it a point to do something you’ve been meaning to do. FINALLY listen to that KNOWING and HONOR YOU!⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Have you known what you wanted and needed in the past, and ignored them? How did it make you feel when you denied yourself what you know you deserved and what are you doing now to change those negative habits?⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Dear One, what will you get done this week?⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Please share if doing so resonates with you.⠀⠀⠀ #mentalhealthtips #emotionsmatter #mentalhealthadvocate #mentalhealthwarrior #goeasy #bodyshaming #bodyimagewarrior #emotionalintelligence #vulnerabilityisstrength #boundariesarehealthy #acceptance #gratitudeattitude #fightneglect #jazbaatsabke #subconsciousmind #unconsciousbias #eclectic #therapymatters #therapistproblems #surrendertotheflow #lifeiscomic

Although many of us feel crazy sometimes, it is important to remember that wounded adult children will do all they can to AVOID emotions they have yet to learn how to process, deal with, accept, surrender to, and manage.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ We are NOT crazy because we have clung to people who could not love us in return, nor are we crazy for trying to make relationship work that could never work. We have had no healthy role models for relationships and we are pretty much flying blind.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ To beat ourselves up for NOT knowing how to love the self, set boundaries, let go of unhealthy dynamics, and allow other people to simply be who they are, many of us are stuck living in defensive mode and sadly, attract situations that make us feel threatened.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ We are not crazy because all men are born asleep, unconscious, and are programmed to repeat whatever information has been downloaded into our subconscious minds.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ We are human beings, with a divine spirit that is subject to the physical laws that govern the physical body and the physical space it has incarnated into and upon.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Until we MASTER what has been done, we will repeat the past.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ The best thing we can do as wounded adult children is to try and begin to heal the realities we have for so long tried to deny, avoid, run from, suppress, and distract from.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ GO EASY--the path to recovery hurts.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ BUT, the view from the other side of the recovery mountain is SO WORTH THE JOURNEY!!!! #mentalhealthtips #emotionsmatter #mentalhealthadvocate #mentalhealthwarrior #goeasy #bodyshaming #bodyimagewarrior #emotionalintelligence #vulnerabilityisstrength #boundariesarehealthy #acceptance #gratitudeattitude #fightneglect #jazbaatsabke #subconsciousmind #unconsciousbias #eclectic #therapymatters #therapistproblems #surrendertotheflow #lifeiscomic
