This variation is utilizing the low cable with a rope attachment. About 3 months ago I posted a 105lb overhead lunge which I have to say seemed quite heavy at the time! Flash forward 3 months to a couple of nights ago when we worked my way up to body weight overhead lunges at 125lbs. Now that was heavy!!😅 . As I’ve said before, I’m not out to break any records, so I’ve not been training for this. In fact, the previous post was the last time we tried a heavy overhead lunge. I do like to challenge myself and feel like I’m making progress, so I was pretty psyched to see a 20lb jump in 3 months! . Above all this is a truly a testament to my awesome trainer @dr.joelseedman_ahp ‘s training philosophy and methodology which consists of implementing eccentric isometrics with 90 degree angles on the basic foundational movements about 80 % of the time, and on more advanced and/or unique variations about 20% of the time, always focusing on performing every movement with perfect, or as close to perfect and biomechanically sound technique as possible. Prone (prone = face down) overhead press, with dowel. . A good upper back exercise! This a good one for warm-ups, or it could be included as a filler exercise. . Start with the dowel resting on top of your hands, with your thumbs pointing up. Initiate the movement by pulling the shoulder blades back and down. Lift the dowel straight up, then pull it back down, behind your head, squeezing the shoulder blades together. Allow the shoulder blades to fall up and forwards at the end of every rep. . These are great for the upper back muscles and shoulder external rotators! Note that, a reasonable level of shoulder mobility is required to be able to do them. . These are far tougher than they look! Split Stance Facepull to Y _ I like Facepull variations to improve posture, train the posterior cuff, and strengthen the upper back. _ The Facepull to Y is one variation I’ll program because it strengthens the upper back. It also drives some upward rotation of the shoulder blade on the Y component of the exercise. @steph_likes_plants you inspired me to give these bad boys a go again. I must say that I forgot how powerful these simple pull ups are. It’s been a week and I’ve already noticed a difference. Must be the plants enabling me to recover fast from them, idk! Hahaha I know for many that this simple exercise is a major goal. If you could get a bench to stand on next to this bar to assist you to the top, hoist yourself to the bar as if you were repping a chin up and hold yourself as your coming down as you arms extend. This little trick should help to achieve the chin up over time. Repeat about 6-7 times (women or men). You’ll get there. As always! We know most of you have seen this before, but it’s just another reminder of the importance of strengthening the upper back and rotator cuff muscles! That is, if you want healthier shoulders and increased pressing ability 😬. . Most people we see are very anterior chain dominant, meaning they’re strong and tight through their chest and weak through their upper back. Over time, this imbalance generally gets worse and worse, due to the way we live our lives (always leaning/reaching forwards)! Eventually this can lead to shoulder issues! . One way to begin to iron out this imbalance is to strengthen the upper back and rotators! . Our advice to everyone would be to buy a light resistance band and do these 50 band pull-aparts everyday! We’ve found that the upper back muscles tend to respond well to higher frequencies and volumes of training. . You want to do 10 reps of each of the 5 variations shown in the video. When doing them, squeeze your glutes and keep your spine neutral (don’t arch your back). Don’t rush them, get a good squeeze in your shoulder blades on every rep! . You can do these anywhere, anytime, eg at work, or in-between sets of other exercises at the gym!
